South Lincolnshire and Border League champions Billingborough took their total of victories in 2011 to 19 when they defeated Sleaford 2nd in their final fixture of the season. Stamford are safe in second place but Moulton Harrox could be overtaken by Spalding and Belton Park, should both win their last matches – against Sleaford 2nd and Grantham respectively - next weekend. At the bottom of the table, Boston 2nd had an unexpected boost when Grantham conceded their match against Stamford, the resulting points deduction putting the Gorse Lane side into last place.

 

In Division Two, one match proved eventful for 12-year-old Jack Timby of Boston 3rds who hit 31 runs and shared a fifth wicket stand of 70 with Paul Tetther who made 74 in his side’s win over Ropsley. At the top of the Division, Skegness 2nd must wait until next weekend, when Stamford 2nd have two matches, against Boston 3rd and Sleaford Sunday.  Stamford need 38 points from these two games to snatch the title from the seasiders.

 

Blankney sealed the Division Three championship with a win over Pinchbeck, finishing on equal points with Blankney who beat Spalding 3rd but going top on the countback of victories – Blankney with 13 and Baston 12.

Billingborough clinched the South Lincolnshire and Border League championship with a slender 12 run victory over Stamford who picked up sufficient points to guarantee they finish runners-up. Dan Duke hit 99 for the leaders who made 247 for eight, only to see Stamford reach 235 before the final wicket fell, Andrew Hulme with 76 and Steve Scott taking six wickets for Billingborough. At the bottom of the table Boston 2nd gained a welcome victory over Woodhall Spa 2nd but can’t now escape last place after Bourne also won, beating Sleaford 2nd by just one run. Bourne hit 174 only to see their opponents’ innings come to a close on 173 for nine. And at Grantham, Lee Eyett hit is maiden century for Spalding – and the league’s one ton of the day - finishing with 108 to help his side to victory.

 

Division Two is set to go right to the wire after leaders Skegness and challengers Stamford 2nd both picked up 20 points, Richie Hewitt enjoying a good day for the seasiders with 55 runs and four wickets. Cavaliers ended one of their best seasons in the league in third place after overcoming Ropsley, but it was 14-year-old bowler Josh Lord who stole the show, taking five Cavaliers wickets for 41 runs. David Curran’s six for 10 for Welby in their victory over Heckington ensure that Welby finished the season in fourth.

 

Division Three remains neck-and-neck, leaders Blankney and second placed Baston both picking up 20 points against Burgh & District and Pinchbeck respectively and a severely depleted Moulton Harrox Sunday team also getting the maximum against Claypole.

While the top two still have a game to play, Moulton have completed their programme and have to settle for third place. Spalding 3rd consolidated fourth place despite losing to Timberland for whom Andy Lowe took four wickets for just one run off 25 balls.

Billingborough’s championship celebrations were put on hold after the South Lincolnshire and Border League Division One leaders went down to Spalding in a low scoring game in which Jamie Juckes and Ansar Hussain each took five wickets. Having been bowled out for 124, Spalding’s bowlers fought back to dismiss the top team for 110, Hussain with five for 12. However, Billingborough still lead Stamford by 32 points with two games to go after the second placed side hit a massive 294 for seven, Chris Bore and Andrew Hulme both making centuries, but were unable to bowl Woodhall Spa 2nd out to take maximum points, the Jubilee Park side making 233 for seven. Boston 2nd slipped to bottom place in the table after going down to Bourne while Market Deeping increased their changes of avoiding relegation with a win over Grantham. 

 

Simon Godby was the pick of the Division One bowling with six for 36 in Sleaford 2nd’s victory over Belton Park. Skegness 2nd saw their lead over Stamford 2nd at the top of Division Two cut to seven points after going down to Spalding 2nd by just two wickets.  And Welby stay fourth after beating Billingborough 2nd in a game that saw a century on either side.

 

The weather intervened to rain off Division Three leaders Moulton Harrox Sunday’s game against Pinchbeck, blowing the top of the table wide open.  Blankney beat North Luffenham to go second on equal points with Baston who overcame Burgh & District.  These two are only two points behind Moulton and both have a game in hand on the top team. Kevin Jacques hit the only ton in this division, making an unbeaten 116 for Claypole in their victory over Grantham 2nd.

South Lincs and Border League leaders Billingborough scored a six wicket victory over third placed Belton Park while second placed Stamford Town recorded a similar victory over Boston 3rd.

 

This opened up a gap between the top two and the rest of the division, with Billingborough – for whom Geordie Scott took seven wickets - now firm favourites for the title.

 

But at the bottom of the table, Bourne 2nd closed the gap on Boston 2nd to two points and both are still within touching distance of Market Deeping 2nd.

 

In Division Two, Cavaliers lost their chance to move closer to leaders Skegness when they went down to Stamford 2nd who are now only seven points adrift of second place with two games in hand but whose place could still be threatened by Welby who scored a tight 10 run win over Spalding 2nd.

 

Blankney won the battle of the Division Three challengers but Baston gained sufficient points to move into second place, on equal points with Spalding 2nd with Blankney nine points behind but with a game in hand.

 

And Timberland’s hopes of victory at North Luffenham were dashed when rain stopped play with the visitors needing 16 runs for victory.

Stamford Town hit the highest total in South Lincolnshire and Border League Division One to consolidate their second place helped by Josh Prentice who made the day’s only century. But Billingborough look set for the championship after another victory, this time over Boston 2nd who are now only three points ahead of Bourne 2nd at the bottom of the table. Prentice hit an unbeaten 100 to help his side to 250 for nine before Simon Lem took five wickets to bowl Market Deeping 2nd out for 138 and Billingborough had an eight wicket win over Boston. Archie Stroud hit his maiden league half century for Bourne who managed to pick up eight points in their game against Spalding and a Barnett family effort kept Moulton Harrox in fourth place, Harry taking five wickets and Jack hitting 96 in a tight two wicket win over

 

Sleaford 2nd. Skegness and Cavaliers continue to do battle for Division Two honours, both recording similar scores in victories over Billingborough 2nd and Boston 3rd respectively. Welby’s Simon Meadows just missed out on a century when he was bowled on 98 by Paul Roberts, who then hit 51 as Sleaford Sunday claimed a five wicket win.

 

In Division Three, Baston and Blankney kept up their challenge for honours, Blankney with an eight wicket win over Claypole and Baston hitting the division’s highest score of 246 for four against Timberland. Danny Ashley of Grantham 2nd put in the best all-round performance, taking six Pinchbeck wickets then hitting an unbeaten 68 to take his side to victory. And Jim Clarke also had a good day, making an unbeaten 58 and taking six wickets in second placed Spalding 3rd’s win over Burgh and District.

The top three in South Lincolnshire & Border League Division One all came away with victories to leave positions unchanged. Leaders Billingborough scored a convincing win over Grantham while second placed Stamford Town got the better of fourth placed Spalding but dropped a point on the leaders. Third placed Belton Park were involved in the tightest game at home to bottom side Bourne 2nd for whom Tom Bentley hit his maiden century to help his side to 202 for four.  Belton were then taken right to the wire with Andy Sheardown hitting the winning four off the last ball of the match. However, Bourne picked up enough points to increase their chances of avoiding relegation and are now just nine behind Boston 2nd – who went down to Moulton Harrox – with a game in hand.

 

Skegness and Cavaliers continued their battle at the top of Division Two with Cavaliers picking up 20 points against Heckington while the leaders failed by just two runs to catch Thomas Cook’s score of 170 for 7, of which Vidit Matta hit division two’s only century. Cavaliers are now 25 behind Skegness, both on equal games, while Stamford 2nd, who beat Billingborough 2nd, are seven behind Cavaliers with a game in hand.  And Welby have pulled up to fourth, 10 behind Stamford.

 

It was all change in Division Three where North Luffenham slipped to fourth after going down by four wickets to Spalding 3rd for whom two batsmen – Stuart Parker and Kevin Nottingham – made maiden 50s. This moved Spalding up to second, 16 behind leaders Moulton Harrox Sunday, but Baston, with two games in hand, are only 20 points adrift of the top team following an eight wicket victory over Claypole. Blankney also kept up their challenge, winning a much higher scoring game against Timberland while Grantham 2nd successfully chased Pinchbeck’s 208 for six to win by three wickets.

Results went mainly to form in South Lincolnshire and Border League Division One where the top four teams all recorded victories. Bourne 2nd put in an improved performance but fell 31 runs short of leaders Billingborough’s score with nine wickets down while Stamford 2nd overcame Lindum Ramblers who were bowled out for 175, chasing 234. Belton Park, who are third, scored a six wicket win over Boston 2nd while Spalding beat Market Deeping by eight wickets.

 

It was the same story in Division Two where leaders Skegness beat Heckington by eight wickets, second placed Cavaliers got the better of Peterborough rivals Thomas Cook, Stamford 2nd scored a convincing win over Boston 3rd and Spalding 2nd came out on top against bottom side Ropsley. Neil Williams hit the day’s only century with 101 for Stamford 2nd, for whom Ben Peck then took five wickets.  Fifth placed Welby kept up their challenge after Jonathan Durham took six wickets in their victory over Billingborough 2nd. And on Sunday, Sam Elliott had a good day for Heckington, hitting 55 and taking seven for 14 as his side beat Sleaford Sunday in a low scoring game.

 

Baston continue to threaten the top two in Division Three following their nine wicket win over Timberland while second placed North Luffenham also won by nine wickets against Claypole.  But leaders Moulton Harrox Sunday were pegged back after torrential rain forced the abandonment of their game when Spalding 3rd were 31 overs into their innings, chasing Moulton’s 185.

The top of Division One of the South Lincolnshire and Border League saw no change as Billingborough and Stamford both claimed 20 points against Woodhall Spa 2nd and Moulton Harrox respectively. But Market Deeping moved up out of the bottom two after a tight game against Sleaford 2nd who were bowled out for 157, just 10 runs short of their opponents score.  Belton Park stay third as, despite five wickets for Spalding’s Mike Kearns jnr, they came away with a 30-run victory. And Ramblers kept up their challenge with an eight-wicket win over Boston 2nd who slipped to 11th in the table.

 

Stewart Mudie hit the day’s only century, scoring an unbeaten 146 in Grantham’s victory over Bourne 2nd while Cavaliers Mohamed Jazeem had the biggest wicket haul with six for 22 against Billingborough 2nd in Division Two. Cavaliers completed a successful two weeks that has seen them beat both top teams, resulting in a move up to second above their opponents who were bowled out for 102 chasing a seemingly modest 132. Skegness got back to winning ways but were unable to bowl out bottom side Ropsley who hung on to their last wicket to deny the top team maximum points.

 

The closest games of the weekend were in Division Three where Timberland beat Pinchbeck by just five runs and Moulton Harrox Sunday and Spalding 3rds both won by only two wickets against Grantham 2nd and Burgh & District respectively.

Billingborough kept up their charge for the South Lincolnshire and Border League Division One title with an eight wicket win over Lindum Ramblers while Stamford 2nd remain second following a similar victory over Sleaford 2nd. Chris Bore hit an unbeaten 108 for Stamford who restricted Sleaford to 163 for nine and opened up a gap over the chasing group after third placed Belton Park went down to Woodhall Spa 2nd. Steve Scott took five catches in the field for Billingborough who bowled Lindum out for 121.  And Bourne 2nd won the battle of the bottom two to move within eight points of opponents Market Deeping 2nd.

 

Leaders Skegness suffered their second defeat in Division Two but rivals Billingborough 2nd failed to capitalise, going down to Heckington by 10 runs. A second wicket partnership of 95 between Dave Robinson (83) and Alex Glover (53) set up Cavalier’s victory over the seasiders but the Peterborough side were made to work hard for their win as Skegness came within 14 runs of their opponents’ score of 198 for seven before the final wicket fell.  Again it was Robinson who turned the game, taking three lower order wickets in five overs. Scott Sharp hit a maiden half century in Heckington’s total of 150 and Billingborough were then bowled out for 140 while Kev Manning’s 60 off 46 balls saw Boston 3rd to victory over Sleaford Sunday. But the closest game in this division was at Ropsley where Stamford reached 176 for three only to see their opponents come within two runs of this score for the loss of five wickets.

 

Division Three also saw a close game at Pinchbeck where Steve Robinson took five wickets to restrict Claypole to 132 all out in their pursuit of their hosts’ 144 for seven. North Luffenham drew away at the top when Baston beat challengers Moulton Harrox Sunday by five wickets.  Steve Richardson took six for 19 for Baston as Moulton were bowled out for 111. Blankney are now one of the best placed to challenge the leaders after David Thomas and Lee Williams shared a third wicket partnership of 224 to take their side to 280 for three.   Thomas hit the day’s highest total of 148 not out and Williams made 95 before Spalding 3rd were bowled out for 136.

Dan Duke recorded the South Lincolnshire & Border League’s best bowling figures of the weekend to help Billingborough retain their unbeaten record at the top of Division One. Duke took seven for 42 as Moulton Harrox were out for 100, a total the leaders overtook for the loss of one wicket. Stamford stay second following their defeat of bottom side Bourne, Brian Bennett taking five wickets for just 11 runs for Stamford and Belton Park posted a similar result, staying third after beating Market Deeping 2nd who are now only one place above Bourne.

 

The surprise result of the day came in Division Two where Stamford 2nd demolished leaders Skegness for just 61 and went on to win by seven wickets.  This allowed Billingborough 2nd to close the gap at the top following their nine wicket win over Boston 3rd, Thomas Cook staying third despite going down to Heckington and Cavaliers shooting back into the top half of the table after beating Sleaford Sunday. Ropsley’s new-look team picked up valuable points with a win over Spalding 2nd who are now fourth, four points behind Thomas Cook.  Andrew Jones hit 89 for Ropsley in their six wicket victory.

 

Division Three’s top team also suffered a reversal, North Luffenham going down to Grantham 2nd. Moulton Harrox Sunday moved into second, having caught up their game in hand over Spalding 3rd, who were without a game. And Pinchbeck opened up the gap at the foot of the table with victory over bottom side Burgh & District.

Four centuries, an eight wicket haul and the first victory of the season for Bourne 2nd  were the highlights of the South Lincolnshire and Border League weekend.

 

Stamford moved into second place in Division One after beating rivals Grantham by just 14 runs, thanks in part to Josh Prentice who claimed eight wickets for 53 runs off his 12 overs. Leaders Billingborough, for whom Geordie Scott made 100, picked up another 20 points with victory over Sleaford 2nd while Lindum Ramblers took over in third following a high scoring game against Belton Park who hit 242 for five – Dan Turner with an unbeaten 108 – only to see Lindum reach their target with two wickets and one over in hand, De Silva making 111 for the Lincoln side. Bottom side Bourne 2nd recorded their first victory of the season, beating Woodhall Spa 2nd who lost five of their wickets to Andrew Knowles and Nick Andrews took six for 11 in Market Deeping 2nds win over Boston 2nd.

 

Skegness extended their lead at the top of Division Two to 45 points with a win over Heckington in which the seasiders’ skipper Alistair Ainsworth hit an unbeaten 105.  Billingborough 2nd kept up their challenge, beating Spalding 2nd who now lie fourth, three points behind Thomas Cook who scored a five wicket win over Ropsley.  And Welby moved into the top half of the table following their victory over Boston 3rd.

 

North Luffenham won the Division Three top of the table battle against Spalding 3rd and are now six points ahead of their rivals with a game in hand. Moulton Harrox Sunday went third following their win over Blankney but Baston continue to threaten all three teams after beating Grantham 2nd for whom Alex Cross took six wickets. Douglas Russell then replied with five for Baston who are 33 points behind the leaders but have two games in hand. Claypole, who are fifth, hit the highest total of the day with a massive 325 for seven against Timberland who were then bowled out for 149.  Claypole’s score included a maiden half century for 17 year old Andy Attewell who went on to make 81.

Billingborough suffered their first defeat of the season in South Lincolnshire and Border League Division One at the hands of Stamford, who moved up to fourth in the table. Challengers Grantham and Moulton Harrox failed to take advantage of the leaders’ result, allowing Belton Park to move up to second after the slimmest of victories by over Moulton. Only seven points now separate second and seventh in the table, with Grantham just two behind second place and two ahead of Moulton who were bowled out for 132 and claimed nine Belton Park wickets before the home side claimed victory. Lindum Ramblers’ 14-year-old batsman Will Wright took his runs total for the season past the 300 mark with an innings of 65 to help his side to a nine wicket win at Market Deeping.

 

And Spalding CC enjoyed a successful weekend with all three teams winning, the 2nd XI consolidating their second place in Division Two with victory over Heckington.  Billingborough 2nd stay third, just seven points adrift with two games in hand while Cavaliers kept their place in the top half of the table after Dave Kennedy hit the day’s only century in the victory over Boston 3rd. Adam Smith hit a maiden half-century and George Kyme took six wickets for Sleaford Sunday but could not prevent their side going down to Thomas Cook by 45 runs.

 

Spalding 3rd, meanwhile, were making sure they remained top of Division Three with a five wicket win in a low scoring game against Pinchbeck but North Luffenham continue to threaten following their ten wicket win over Timberland in which David Brew took six wickets. Luffenham are 12 points behind Spalding with a game in hand – and the two meet next weekend at The Oval.

Boston bowler Paul Deans had his club officials running to the record books after recording an amazing nine wickets for just 10 runs in his side’s South Lincolnshire & Border League Division One match against Bourne 2nd. Deans’ haul came off 9.5 overs, with four maidens and gave his side their first victory of the season as well as opening up the gap over their opponents at the bottom of the table.

 

Billingborough marched on at the top with a convincing victory over Belton Park but Grantham are still in hot pursuit after a five wicket win against Market Deeping. Third placed Moulton Harrox had their game washed out at Lindum Ramblers.

 

Division Two brought the most exciting game of the day, which once again involved Cavaliers. Batting first at Spalding, the Peterborough side finished on 178 for nine, Alex Glover with 60 and Heath Ripley taking five wickets for the home side – who ended 177 for nine. Leaders Skegness, who have yet to lose a game, beat Welby by three wickets while second placed Sleaford Sunday beat Ropsley.  However, the following day, Sleaford lost the opportunity to close the gap on Skegness when they went down heavily to Spalding 2nd, for whom new signing Barry Stanway took eight wickets to push his team up from eighth to third in the table. 

 

Steve Ryder hit his maiden century – and the only ton of the day - for Claypole in their Division Three victory over leaders Spalding 3rd, which allowed North Luffenham to close the gap with a win over Pinchbeck.

Billingborough now lead Division One of the South Lincolnshire and Border League by 36 points following victory in a close game against Spalding. But below the leaders, just three points separate the next four teams with Grantham second - on equal points with Moulton Harrox but with one victory more - and Belton Park and Sleaford 2nd in hot pursuit. Dave Newman added another 94 to his ever-growing runs total as Billingborough made 228 for eight but Spalding put in a valiant pursuit and were only 14 runs short of the target when their final wicket fell. Newman has now passed the 400 run mark for the season as has Jack Barnett of Moulton Harrox who hit 72 as his side enjoyed a comfortable victory over Market Deeping 2nd while Grantham won a low scoring game against Woodhall Spa 2nd. Belton Park had a much closer game, beating Sleaford 2nd by only 14 runs and It was even tighter at bottom side Bourne where Matt Benson took seven for 23 to restrict the home side to 181 all out – a total Lindum Ramblers had just equalled when their final wicket fell.

 

Skegness march on at the top of Division Two, now 46 points ahead of second placed Billingborough 2nd who have a game in hand.  Skegness won a low scoring match against Boston 3rd by 17 runs while Billingborough convincingly beat Thomas Cook. The closest game in this division saw Spalding 2nd beat Cavaliers by just six runs.

 

Spalding 3rd beat Timberland by two wickets to stay top of Division Three, with North Luffenham second and Moulton Harrox third despite both being rained off on Sunday.  Baston’s win over Grantham 2nd, in which two Baston bowlers each took five wickets, leaves them in fourth place.

Billingborough opened up a 25 point gap over Sleaford 2nd at the top of South Lincolnshire and Border League after picking up 20 points against Boston 2nd while Sleaford 2nd took 17 from their victory over Moulton Harrox. Bowlers dominated in the leaders’ match, Paul Deans taking six wickets for Boston and Roy Tilley replying with five for Billingborough. Lindum Ramblers moved into the top half or the table after hitting the division’s highest team total of the day of 258, Will Wright contributing 79 and Matt Haslam taking five wickets for Woodhall Spa who were then bowled out for 98. On equal points with Lindum are Stamford who beat Market Deeping by five wickets thanks in part to an unbeaten 82 from Andrew Hulme while, despite five wickets for Matt Pottle, Bourne 2nd remain anchored at the bottom of the table after going down to Spalding for whom Ansar Hussain hit an unbeaten 89.

 

Skegness moved even further ahead at the top of Division Two after a comprehensive 10 wicket win over Stamford 2nd while Welby got back to winning ways with victory over Cavaliers and Thomas Cook won a high scoring game against Boston 3rd.Joe Braithwaite took 11 wickets in Heckington’s two matches – five on Saturday when his team went down heavily attempting to chase Spalding’s 258 for nine and six on Sunday when Heckington scored an unexpected win over Sleaford Sunday who are now only three points ahead of Welby in second place.

Billingborough won the South Lincolnshire and Border League top of the table battle to take a 13-point lead over opponents Grantham who are now only three ahead of Belton Park. Daniel Turner was the man of the match for Belton, taking five Bourne wickets then hitting 60 runs in his side’s eight-wicket victory.

 

The closest game in Division One saw Lindum Ramblers beat Sleaford 2nd by just eight runs, Will Wright hitting 82 for Ramblers and Paul Roberts making 90 for Sleaford.  This left Sleaford in fourth place with Moulton Harrox, who beat Boston 2nd, in fifth.

 

Skegness continued their good run at the top of Division Two with a nine wicket win over Cavaliers who dropped to fifth.  Sleaford Sunday consolidated their second place with a win at Stamford, John Mountain and Phil Sneath each hitting centuries.

But Billingborough, now third, are in a good position to challenge Sleaford, having two games in hand, as have Heckington for whom Sam Elliott took a hat trick in his 6-28 which helped his side to beat Thomas Cook.

 

Division Three provided the tightest game of the day, Spalding 3rd retaining top position after a three run win over Grantham 2nd whose last wicket fell on 255 as they pursued Spalding’s 258 for nine of which Jamie Jukes hit 99.

Timberland moved into third after a nine run victory over Pinchbeck but only 13 points separate third and eighth.

Grantham’s victory over Sleaford 2nd opened up a gap at the top of South Lincolnshire and Border League Division One. Grantham are now second, just two points behind Billingborough while Sleaford are 12 points adrift in third and are being threatened by Belton Park, who trail them by one point. Martin Parmley hit 80 in Grantham’s eight wicket victory while Dave Newman took his runs total for the season to 315 with an innings of 126 as Billingborough overcame bottom team Bourne, David Gollop taking six wickets for the leaders. Belton Park were involved in a much closer game against Boston 2nd, winning by 14 runs and Stamford got their campaign back on track with victory over Lindum Ramblers. Ryan Bainborough had a good day behind the stumps for Market Deeping, taking four catches and a stumping in his side’s four wicket win over Spalding but six wickets for Steve Hughes couldn’t prevent Woodhall Spa going down to defeat by Moulton Harrox.

 

In Division Two, Skegness continue to dominate the table with Welby in second.  However, Cavaliers and Billingborough 2nd, both with games in hand, are breathing down Welby’s neck after beating Thomas Cook and Heckington respectively. Ian Glendenning’s unbeaten 85 rescued Heckington after Cavaliers’ bowlers had reduced them to 45 for five.  Heckington were finally bowled out for 196 in 36 overs, Dave Robinson taking six wickets for Cavaliers who were glad of the extra overs, finally claiming victory by four wickets in the 49th over of their innings.

 

North Luffenham moved to the top of Division Three with a nine wicket win over Grantham 2nd and Spalding 3rd and Claypole also went ahead of former leaders Baston who were without a game.  Claypole overcame Spalding in a high scoring match but remain three points behind their opponents.

After four matches, just four points separate the top three in South Lincolnshire and Border League Division One.  Sleaford 2nd head the list, two in front of Billingborough with Grantham a further two points adrift after all three recorded victories over the weekend. Sleaford beat Market Deeping by 87 runs while Billingborough fought out a tighter game against Woodhall Spa 2nd who were set a target of 225 but finished on 192 for nine.  And Grantham just failed to bowl bottom side Bourne 2nd out but collected 17 points from their four-wicket win. Spalding put an end to Belton Park’s good start to the season and Lindum Ramblers put their bad run behind them with a win over Boston 3rd, Will Wright hitting the division’s top score of the day with 74.

 

Skegness 2nd lead Division Two but only 11 points separate the next five teams. Welby lie second despite going down to a real nailbiter against fourth placed Cavaliers who lost nine wickets chasing a modest total of 117. In contrast, Heckington devasted Billingborough 2nd whose pursuit of their visitors’ 205 for seven ended on just 39, Joe Braithwaite taking five for 20 off nine overs and Sam Elliott four for 19 off 10. Thomas Cook moved up to third after beating Boston 3rd who suffered a second defeat on Sunday against Sleaford for whom Gavin Hutson hit the weekend’s only century.

 

In Division Three, it was an early finish at Claypole after Scott Barnsdale’s six for 21 off nine overs helped bowl Grantham 2nd out for 66, a total Claypole knocked off without loss. North Luffenham won the battle at the top of the table despite being bowled out for 105 by Baston who were then all out for 86 but remain two points clear of their opponents.   Timberland moved into third after beating Burgh & District and on Sunday, Spalding 3rd got the better of Moulton Harrox.

After three games, Sleaford 2nd and Belton Park are the early leaders in South Lincolnshire and Border League Division One, each with 58 points.  But just one point behind them are Grantham and Billingborough after all four teams enjoyed a victorious weekend. Sleaford notched up the top score of the weekend and Luke Hollingworth hit the only century in his side’s win over Stamford.  Hollingworth made 127 as Sleaford’s innings ended on 300 for seven before Stamford were bowled out for 176. Belton Park lost just three wickets overtaking Woodhall Spa’s 194 for nine, Dave Richardson making 87 while Grantham defended their total of 186, restricting Moulton Harrox to 150 for seven. And Billingborough scored an eight-wicket win over Lindum Ramblers. Lower down the table, Bourne 2nd went down to Market Deeping and Spalding beat Boston 2nd.

 

Welby moved to the top of Division Two after beating Ropsley by five wickets with Skegness in second following their victory over Thomas Cook.  Two players just missed out on centuries in one game – Neville Stankley of Sleaford Sunday with 93 and Peter Houghton of victors Skegness with 94. Gary Peck made 80 for Stamford 2nds in their victory over Heckington, while Trevor Ginn bagged the highest number of wickets with 6-59 in Billingborough 2nd’s win over Cavaliers.

 

Baston top Division Three where fewer games have so far been played. John Lamin putting in the performance of the day with 65 runs and six wickets as his side beat Blankney – playing their first game of the season - by just six runs in a very tight game. Timberland put last year’s problems behind them to kick their season off by beating Grantham 2nd and there was a six wicket haul at North Luffenham where the home side’s Robert Staniland took six for 26 but couldn’t prevent Moulton Harrox Sunday claiming victory.

Spalding need one run off the last ball of the match to snatch victory from Woodhall Spa 2nd in South Lincolnshire & Border League Division One – instead that ball claimed Spalding’s 10 wicket and the game was tied on 223 each. Earlier Rob Bee had scored the top division’s only century with an unbeaten 106 and Nic Stone had contributed 65 not out to Woodhall’s 223 for two before the Spalding fightback gave both sides a share of the points. Belton Park put an end to Stamford’s good start to their Division One career, Nick Law and Daniel Turner putting together a mid-innings stand of over 100 that put the game out of Stamford’s reach. The partnership began when the home side had been reduced to 45 for four, Law hitting 58 and Turner 64 as Belton reached 220 for seven at the close, Liam Dave taking five wickets for the visitors. Andrew Sheardown then helped his side to victory, taking five for 18 as Stamford were all out for 114. Billingborough marched on, recording a nine wicket win over Market Deeping after bowling their opponents out for 93 and Moulton Harrox continued their promising opening with a seven wicket win over Bourne 2nd, Jack Barnett taking five wickets for Harrox. Grantham also built on their opening victory with a four wicket win over Lindum Ramblers while Sleaford 2nd won a tight game against Boston 2nd by just 18 runs.

 

Dave Robinson made 119 for Cavaliers in a high scoring Division Two derby against Thomas Cook who set a challenging total of 219 for seven, only to lose by five wickets.

 

Michael Whatton made 84 and Dave Curran took five wickets as Welby got their season on track with a 32 run win over Stamford 2nd and Matt Cox also took five for Billingborough 2nd as they overcame Sleaford Sunday by four wickets.

In the only game in Division Three, Dave Brew took for 5-13 for North Luffenham in their victory over Pinchbeck.

Grantham, Sleaford 2nd and Belton Park all picked up maximum points in the first full weekend of Division One in the South Lincolnshire and Border League.

 

Daniel Gascoyne did the damage for Grantham, taking five wickets to help bowl out Boston 2nd for 107, a total Grantham overtook with only two down. James Rickett also took five for Sleaford 2nd against Woodhall Spa 2nd who were all out for 143 despite Charles Wright’s 51.  Sleaford went on to win by five wickets. And in Belton Park’s game there were three half centuries, Alex Wheatley making 50 in Market Deeping 2nd’s total of 126 while Dave Richardson and Richard Cocks hit half centuries as Belton won by nine wickets. Elsewhere, Stamford continued their good start to their campaign in the top flight with an 18 point victory over Bourne 2nd for whom Robert Bentley made the only century of the day with 100 not out.  This helped Bourne to 173 for eight but Stamford reached their target for the loss of only three wickets, Andrew Hulme hitting an unbeaten 54. Champions Billingborough also set off well after restricting Moulton Harrox to 151 for eight, Jack Barnett hitting 84.  David Gollop then made 51 as Billingborough won by seven wickets. And despite being distracted by a rugby-playing streaker half way through the game, Lindum Ramblers kept their concentration to beat Spalding by six wickets, Liam Moir-Holland and Grant Watkins hitting 54 and 62 not out respectively for the Lincoln side.

 

In Division Two, last season’s challengers Welby went down for the second week running, being bowled out for 88 after Thomas Cook had made 171 for five in their innings, Vinit Shah with 66.

 

Division Three’s only game saw Spalding 3rd beat league newcomers Pinchbeck by four wickets.

Newly promoted Stamford got their Division One campaign off to a flying start when they picked up 20 points with a 10 wicket win over Spalding with Chris Bore hitting an unbeaten 82.

 

Market Deeping also set off well, winning a tighter game against Boston 2nd who failed by 13 runs to reach their opponents’ total of 215 of which Richard Witt hit 69.  Luke Gilding made 73 for Boston but the final wicket fell on 202.

 

Sleaford Sunday carried on where they left off in 2010 with a three wicket win over Welby in Division Two and in Division Three, Baston made the highest total of the day of 235 for four, Chris Bower failing by just two runs to hit the first century of the season.  Spalding 3rd were then bowled out for 120.

 

Grantham 2nd, who found victories hard to come by last year, started off with a five wicket win over Moulton Harrox for whom Jack Barnett made an unbeaten 90 while Lewis Dann hit 67 for Grantham.

A full programme of fixtures gets South Lincolnshire and Border League Division One under way on April 24, with Stamford and Market Deeping 2nd already off to a flying start with 20-point victories in early games last Saturday.

 

Stamford’s opponents this week are Bourne 2nd while Deeping are home to Belton Park but it is champions Billingborough who are the ones to watch in their home match against Moulton Harrox. After the success of Mark Joyce in 2010, Billingborough may once again look down under to strengthen their squad. 

 

Boston, who have signed two Australians who are resident in the area, travel to Grantham looking for a victory following their defeat by Deeping and Spalding - last week’s other losing team - go to Lindum Ramblers.

 

The only game in Division Two is Welby v Thomas Cook while in Division Three, newcomers Pinchbeck face their first match in the league at home to Spalding 3rd.  All fixtures start at 1pm.

The 2011 season gets under way early for a handful of South Lincolnshire & Border League teams.

 

Saturday (April 16) sees two games in Division One, including newly promoted Stamford who take on Spalding at home while Market Deeping 2nd entertain Boston 2nd.

 

Stamford have had a meteoric rise through the league, winning Division Three in their first season and Division Two in their second, while their 2nd XI also achieved promotion in their first season and will this year play in Division Two.

 

Welby v Sleaford Sunday is the early game in the second flight and in Division Three, Spalding 3rd will be looking for a better start to the season when they take on Baston at home in a fixture brought forward from July.

 

On Sunday, Grantham 2nd play host to Moulton Harrox Sunday.
