First XI sign off with impressive triumph

Boston CC first XI signed off their fifth season in the Lincs ECB Cricket League with an impressive victory. Success by a 145-run margin was highlighted by an unbeaten knock of 138 by Dan Milgate who also claimed bowling figures of 5-35. The win, though, is unlikely to keep Boston in the league — the team having finished bottom of the division with only two victories all campaign. Confirmation of their future status will be decided at the Premier League annual meeting. If relegation is their destiny, Boston will return to life in the South Lincs and Border League. The second XI took on Oakham and suffered defeat by just a 10-run margin. Dave Gilding achieved a knock of 85 but Boston fell just short of their opponents’ score of 220. Elsewhere on Saturday, the East Lindsey XI were emphatically beaten at Burgh. Twenty-four hours later, the EL XI bounced back with a 23-run win over Friskney. In the Lincoln League, Boston demolished Heckington by a nine-wicket margin.

September 8-9

Milgate tops the bill with unbeaten century feat

Dan Milgate scored an unbeaten century for the second successive Sunday, as Boston annihilated Nocton at the Mayflower on Sunday in the Lincoln Sunday League. Milgate (159 not out) and Mark McDowell (57) shared a third wicket partnership of 183 to propel Boston to 257-3 declared. In reply, Scott Elleray, Ben Harwood and Kevin Brooks hit the wicket trail to skittle Nocton for just 39. On the same day, the East Lindsey XI went down to defeat against Woodhall Spa.

On Saturday, it was a also a case of two defeats at the hands of Woodhall in a Lincs ECB Premier League clash. The first XI lost out by seven wickets. Mickey Troops hit an unbeaten half-century for the first XI in their total of 189-9, but former Boston batsman Ricky Lovelace struck 79 to guide his side to victory, for the loss of just three wickets.

Elsewhere in the South Lincs and Border League, Boston seconds attempted to chase Woodhall’s 245-5, in which another former Boston player, Pete Epton, scored 90 not out. Gareth Epton claimed two wickets for Boston, before the hosts replied with a valiant 196, thanks in the main part to John Morris (54) and Steve Elleray (39).

Slender loss for battling first XI

Boston CC first XI suffered an agonisingly slender defeat against Caistor in the Lincs ECB Premier League. Caistor had posted a score of 243-3 and Boston then fell just a handful of runs short in their chase. Kevin Evans and Conrad Louth both hit half-centuries as Boston fell to 232 all out, with 16 balls remaining.

Chris Daniel’s performance with the bat was the only highlight for Boston second XI in their South Lincs and Border League match against Belton Park. He scored 28 of his side’s 100, before Belton Park knocked off the required runs for the loss of two wickets.

On Sunday, Dan Milgate and Conrad Louth both hit undefeated centuries as Boston thrashed Branston in a Lincoln Sunday League encounter. Milgate (127 not out) and Louth (115 not out) put on 228 for the third wicket as Boston posted 259-2 declared. Louth then took four wickets as Branston were eventually dismissed for 134, despite various time-wasting tactics with heavy rain looming.

The East Lindsey XI suffered a one-wicket loss at Graves Park. After scoring 188-7, with Steve Elleray, Steffen Cook and Sam Gilding among the runs, the hosts sneaked home with one wicket intact. Gilding and Cook continued their fine form with three wickets apiece.

Meanwhile, a Boston XI defeated Stourbridge in a midweek friendly, with the hosts emerging as 118-run winners. Tom Baxter and Ricky Drury struck half-centuries, while Joe Lawson-West and Dan Milgate both took two wickets apiece.

August 25-26

Long-awaited silverware success for Boston

Boston Cricket Club collected their first piece of silverware since 2001 when they lifted the Major Hoult Cup on Sunday at Blankney CC. Boston, from Division Three of the Lincoln League, beat current Division Two leaders Old Lincolnians by seven wickets, having bowled out their opponents for just 76. Liam Aggett claimed 5-12, but was pipped to the man-of-the-match award by skipper Conrad Louth, who made an unbeaten 41 as Boston successfully chased the runs required. Elsewhere on Sunday, the scheduled East Lindsey fixture against Brocklesby Park was called off due to the visitors not being able to raise a side.

On Saturday, the First XI saw their survival hopes take a further blow, courtesy of a 118-run defeat to Bourne at Abbey Lawn. Having posted 223-6, Bourne then bowled Boston out for 105. Dan Milgate claimed two wickets for Boston, while also scoring 31 runs in his side’s paltry reply. The second XI were bowled out for 152 by Bourne seconds, despite John Morris’ defiant 40. In reply, skipper Alan Mountford took two wickets, but Bourne reached their victory target for the loss of only four wickets. Boston thirds, though, recorded an impressive win over Baston and Langtoft, to keep their slim title hopes alive. Baston were dismissed for 108, with Kevin Brooks, John Horton, John Elleray and Steffen Cook among the wickets. In reply, Tim Butler (28), Niall Young (30) and Horton (18 not out) helped Boston reach 109-4, just under 20 overs into their innings.

August 18-19

Rain brings halt to weekend’s action programme

Boston Cricket Club saw all three Saturday fixtures abandoned due to rain. And both of Sunday’s matches were also called off due to the prevailing inclement weather.

The first XI stood at 41-2 in reply to Bracebridge Heath’s 252-3 in their Lincs ECB Premier League fixture when the rain set in at the Mayflower. Dan Milgate had earlier taken 2-93 for Boston. The seconds posted a score of 161-6 at Oakham, thanks in the main part to a 111-run opening partnership between Tim Taylor (58) and Alan Mountford (55). Then the elements halted proceedings. The third XI had restricted Ropsley to 160-9 in their South Lincs and Border League match, with Tim Bell (three), John Horton (two), Steffen Cook (two) and John Elleray (two) all taking wickets. But then again, rain set in.

And on Sunday there was no play in the game against Southbank in the East Lindsey League, while the Lincoln League match away to Sleaford was called off half-way through when the home side’s innings had closed on 225-4.

August 11-12

Points returns aplenty for Boston sides

There were sizeable points returns for all teams connected with Boston Cricket Club over the weekend. The first XI secured nine points from a three-quarters losing draw away to Market Deeping when, despite making a disastrous start to their reply, Messrs Stone (42), Brooks (39no) and Troops (38) helped to steady the ship to a finishing tally of 175-9 in reply to the hosts’ 235 all out. Elsewhere in the South Lincs and Border League, Boston seconds emerged two-wicket winners away to their Market Deeping counterparts while the thirds crushed Cavaliers by 60 runs. Then on Sunday in the East Lindsey League, Boston enjoyed a decisive seven-wicket success against Revesby.

In the days building up to the weekend action, a Boston squad hit the road to the south coast for midweek tour matches away to Sidley (won by 119 runs), Roffey (lost by seven wickets) and Worthing Chippingdale (won by 36 runs). August 4-5

Duo from Oz in rich vein of form

Aussie pair Dan Milgate and Liam Aggett were in a rich vein of form as teams from Boston Cricket Club notched impressive wins on Sunday. Milgate took 4-15 as the Lincoln League XI dismissed rivals Heighington for just 65 while Colin Cheer and Callum Moses also took two wickets apiece. In reply, Conrad Louth and Jonathan Cheer helped Boston make light work of their victory chase and they claimed a full 20 points by reaching 66-2 in just the 10th over.

Aggett scored 52 and then took the final two wickets as the East Lindsey XI thrashed Horncastle at the Mayflower. Tom Baxter (50), Ricky Drury (37), Dave Gilding (34), Scott Elleray (23 off six balls) and Sam Deptford (24 off nine balls) helped Boston reach 269-5 off 40 overs. In reply, Elleray and Sam Gilding both took three wickets, while Matthew Howard was also on target as Horncastle crumbled to 127 all out.

On Saturday in the Lincs ECB Premier League, Kevin Evans led the way with the ball as Boston secured a draw against Sleaford. The visitors chalked up 248-8, before Boston responded with 207-7. Conrad Louth and Mickey Troops played entertaining and important innings with the bat while Evans had earlier been the pick of the bowlers with 2-53 off 17 overs.

The second XI in the South Lincs and Border League posted 178 at Sleaford, but the hosts overtook that total for the loss of six wickets in the penultimate over. Tim Taylor and Steve Elleray top scored, while John Morris claimed three wickets in reply, but it wasn’t enough for Boston.

The third XI were beaten heavily by Moulton Harrox. Boston collapsed from 54-0 to 112 all out, with only Dave Gilding, Tom Kemp and Callum Moses doing themselves justice with the bat. However, the hosts replied with 113-0 to seal an impressive 10-wicket success.

July 28-29

Evans stars, but debut ends in defeat

Despite welcoming new signing Kevin Evans into the fold, Boston CC first XI suffered defeat against high-riding Grimsby Town. Boston took first knock but were bowled out for 142, Evans top scoring with 27. In reply, Evans took 5-30, but Grimsby reached their victory target for the loss of five wickets. The result left Boston still toiling at the foot of the Lincs ECB Premier League.

The loss incurred by the first XI was the forerunner to a gloomy Saturday all round for the Boston camp. For the second XI, Scott Elleray claimed bowling figures of 4-68 to help restrict Caythorpe to 194-6. But Boston were subsequently bowled out for 135. Alan Mountford, Ian Morris and debutant Chris Daniel led the way with the bat, but it was not enough as Boston slipped to defeat.

After winning their first six completed games of the season, the third XI have now lost two on the bounce. After restricting Blankney to 131-6, Boston slumped to 112 all out in reply. John Horton enjoyed a good day for Boston, claiming 3-44 and then jointly top scoring with Chris King (17 runs apiece).

Sunday’s scheduled Lincoln League XI fixture against Carholme was awarded to Boston after the visitors failed to raise a side. Boston claimed the full 20 points.

One ray of joy was the East Lindsey XI’s decisive win over Sutton on Sea. Boston batted first and reached an all-out total of 180. With the ball, Boston skittled out their opponents for just 55.

July 21-22

It’s another rain-drenched wipe-out

Not for the first time in a rain-drenched season, on-going bad weather put paid to Boston Cricket Club’s entire programme of scheduled weekend action, leaving players selected for three Saturday fixtures and two Sunday games kicking their heels.

July 14-15

First XI clinch victory spoils

Boston CC’s first XI broke their winning duck in the Lincs ECB Premier League with a fine 87-run home win over Messingham. Boston batted first at the Mayflower and, inspired by an innings of 41 by Conrad Louth, they attained three bowling bonus points by reaching an all-out score of 176. With the ball, Boston — despite being without front line bowler Colin Cheer — made regular inroads into the visiting batting line-up. Mickey Troops bagged four wickets while Liam Aggett and Scott Elleray notched three apiece in a fine fielding display. Boston seconds were left inactive due to their Suth Lincs and Border game at Grantham being called off (unfit ground). The thirds, meanwhile, disappointingly lost at Welby.

July 7-8

Firsts among points with a rare tie

The rarity of a match tie was the outcome for Boston Cricket Club first XI when they travelled to contest Lincs ECB Premier League points away to Lindum. Boston bowled the home side out for 141 (with Mickey Troops and Dan Milgate both grabbing four wickets) and appeared to have a good chance of netting maximum points. But in reply, they stood at 77-7. But then a fine stand between Tom Baxter and Lee Brooks laid the foundations for a positive recovery. Needing just seven runs of the final over, though, Boston fell one short and had to settle for a share of the spoils still with one wicket in hand. There was defeat, though, for Boston second XI when they played host to Lindum Ramblers. Boston never made any impact as a batting unit and slumped to 79 all out. Ramblers coasted to the required total with six wickets in hand. Sunday saw Boston’s Lincoln League side win through to the final of the Major Hoult Cup with an emphatic demolition job on Waddington. Boston batted first in their semi-final encounter at the Mayflower and posted a formidable score of 272-3 (Conrad Louth 154 and Mark McDowell 61). Then, in reply, Waddington capitulated in the face of a purposeful home attack and crumbled to a paltry 30 all out — leaving Boston victorious by a monstrous 242-run margin.

June 30-July 1

Rain delivers another washout hammer-blow

For the third weekend in a row, rain inflicted a devastating hammer-blow on the scheduled Saturday action schedule for Boston Cricket Club with the first XI’s Lincs ECB Premier League away match against Nettleham plus the second and third XIs’ respective South Lincs and Border League home clashes with Long Sutton and Oakham seconds also being washed out. And there was also no action possible in either of Boston’s two scheduled Sunday fixtures, completing a second successive total washout in two weekends!

June 23-24

It’s a clean sweep wash-out

Rain forced the call-off of all five of Boston Cricket Club’s scheduled Saturday and Sunday cricket fixtures, including the Major Hoult Cup quarter-final against Heighington. This will now hopefully be played as a reduced overs midweek encounter at the Mayflower in the week starting July 2. Elsewhere on the Boston CC front, the first XI will entertain Bracebridge Heath in the quarter-final of the Bews Brown Cup on Sunday July 15, a match postponed from a few weeks ago. The re-arranged match will be played at the Mayflower with a 12.30pm start. In addition, the unresolved Lincoln League fixture against Heckington will now be played on Sunday September 16.

June 16-17

More winning returns for seconds and thirds

More victory spoils were landed by Boston CC’s second and third XIs on Saturday in South Lincs and Border League fixtures. The second team played host to Belton Park in a Division One clash and emerged winners by a 54-run margin. Knocks of 41 by Paul Timby and Ross Don-Duncan (not out) couple with a 40-run haul by opener Alan Mountford laid the foundations for Boston to post a total of 179-5. Then, with the ball, Boston quickly took a grip on proceedings with John Morris (four wickets) and Timby (three) helping to skittle out their visitors for just 125.

Boston thirds made light work of claiming a Division Two success against Grantham who were dismissed for just 89 (three wickets apiece here for J P Horton and Tim Bell). In reply, Boston lost a couple of wickets but were guided to a facile win by unbeaten knocks of 39 and 27 respectively from Niall Young and Paul Tetther.

Boston first XI were left without a Lincs ECB Premier League match when their scheduled trip to Caistor fell victim to heavy rain in the north of the county.

On Sunday, Dave Gilding led the East Lindsey XI to a seven-wicket success over Hainton. Boston’s bowlers performed well to dismiss Hainton for just 114. Liam Aggett took 4-14, while other wickets fell to Sam Gilding (3-27), Tim Bell (2-18) and Steffen Cook (1-23). In reply, Tim Bell and Tim Taylor contributed 18 and 33 respectively, but it was left to Tom Baxter (31 not out) and Ricky Drury (15 not out) to put on a fourth wicket partnership of 43 to see their side over the winning line.

June 9-10

Mountford leads by example with unbeaten knock

Alan Mountford top scored with 92 not out to help inspire Boston seconds to an impressive South Lincs and Border League win away to Bourne 2nd XI. His effort was the highlight of a treble bill of Saturday action that also saw victory for the third XI away to Heckington, also in the South Lincs league, but defeat for the first team when they entertained Bourne in a Lincs ECB Premier League encounter.

For the second XI at Bourne, Boston skittled out their hosts for just 152. The returning Paul Timby took 4-46 as Bourne were bowled out, while Mountford (2-15), Shaun Moore (1-24) and Scott Elleray (1-29) also claimed wickets. In reply Mountford led by example in the run chase and gained good support from the likes of Timby (17) and youngster Ricky Drury (14) in a four-wicket win that yielded 18 Division One points.

Kevin Brooks skippered the third XI to their fifth consecutive win with an 82-run success at Heckington. Niall Young (64), Sam Wainwright (32) and Jasper Borrill (27) scored the bulk of Boston’s 213-6 off 45 overs, before Boston bowled their hosts out for just 131. Brooks, Tim Bell, John Elleray and Steffen Cook all claimed two wickets apiece, while youngster Matthew Poole added one and Sam Deptford executed a fine run-out to complete Boston’s comfortable success.

At the Mayflower, the Boston first XI suffered a 71-run defeat at the hands of Bourne. The day got off to a great start with Colin Cheer trapping visiting opener Cliff Spinks LBW with the first ball of the match. But Bourne hit back to post 226-9, thanks mainly to a 151-run second wicket partnership between Ben Stroud (67) and David Rees (84). Mickey Troops was Boston’s top bowler with figures of 5-51. In reply, Boston lost a couple of early wickets to needless run-outs and despite six batsmen making decent double figure scores, they were bowled out for 155. Jonathan Cheer top scored with 40. A final wicket partnership of 41 between Troops and John Morris added a degree of respectability to the scoreline. Boston earned six points for their efforts, but remained at the foot of the table.

On Sunday, it was a case of a disappointing double defeat for Boston sides. Hamza Minhas’ knock of 80 proved to be in vain as Boston’s Lincoln League XI lost by just one run at Heckington. Colin Cheer led the way with the ball (5-19) as Boston dismissed their hosts for 146. But things went awry in reply with the visitors finding themselves 6-3 off seven overs. Mark McDowell (14) and Gareth Epton (23) added their assistance as Minhas took centre stage. But with nine runs off the final over and two wickets falling, Boston finished just two runs short of victory. At Skegness, Boston’s East Lindsey XI suffered a humiliating defeat. After being bowled out for 97, Skegness reached their victory target for the loss of just two wickets in 16 overs.

June 2-3

Joy for seconds, third, but agony for first XI

There was victory delight for Boston second and third XIs but a heavy defeat for the club’s first team at the hands of all-conquering Bracebridge Heath.

John Morris, Shaun Moore and Alan Mountford took two wickets apiece for the seconds as South Lincs and Border League Division One opponents Oakham posted 186-7 off 45 overs. With the bat, Boston’s top five all made good contributions, notably with the likes of Mountford (26), Rob Grant (37), Gareth Epton (38), Paul Menzies (15) and Ross Don-Duncan (31 not out) helping the team to win with five wickets and 13 balls to spare.

The third XI creditably recorded their fourth straight SLBL Division Two victory via an 18-run win over Moulton Harrox at the Mayflower. Niall Young (52) led the way with the bat, but there were also good contributions by Dave Gilding (20), Jasper Borrill (28) and Chris King (23). With the ball, skipper Kevin Brooks took 4-31 to lead his side’s victory charge.

There was little cheer for the first XI though, with Lincs ECB Premier League leaders and title favourites Bracebridge Heath inflicting a 213-run defeat on Boston. After posting 297-5 off 48 overs declared, Bracebridge bowled Boston out for just 84, an innings notable only for a top score of 31 by Conrad Louth.

On Sunday, Colin Cheer grabbed a six-wicket haul (all clean bowled) at a cost of just 13 runs to help secure a two-wicket Lincoln Sunday League win over Branston. Boston dismissed their rivals for just 85. In reply, Jonathan Cheer (31) and Conrad Louth (18) had guided Boston into a good position at 40-1, but a collapse forced Horton to fire 10 valuable runs at the death, with eight wickets down, as the visitors limped home at 86-8, but still able to claim a maximum haul of 20 points.

At the Mayflower, Boston entertained Freiston, Leake and Leverton in the East Lindsey League and were eventually beaten by 36 runs. The visitors posted 184 all out, before Boston replied with 148-9 off 40 overs.

On Wednesday (June 8), Boston’s East Lindsey XI are scheduled to travel to Skegness in the second round of the Knockout Cup, 6.30pm start.

May 26-27

Firsts and seconds beaten, but thirds keep up fine form

Boston CC first XI suffered another Lincs ECB Premier League defeat when tumbling on home soil by six wickets against Market Deeping. Six Boston batsmen achieved scores of 20 or more but none managed a big total in an overall 50-over team score of 202-8. In reply, Dan Milgate’s return of 2-53 gave Boston brief hope of skittling out their visitors. But with only one additional wicket apiece for Colin Cheer and Mickey Troops, Deeping got to the winning total for the loss of just four batsmen.

Elsewhere, a reshuffled Boston second XI also suffered at the hands of their Market Deeping counterparts in a South Lincs and Border League clash. After scoring just 103, Boston managed to take just two wickets (for Scott Elleray and Gareth Epton) in reply, but it was not enough to avert a decisive loss. With the bat, the likes of Gareth Epton, Rob Grant, Luke Gilding and Wills Barker all reached double figures.

But there was much brighter news for Boston third XI when they recorded a 34-run win over Long Sutton seconds in a South Lincs and Border League encounter. Here teenagers Ricky Drury (65) and Sam Deptford (59) both bagged maiden senior half centuries. The pair shared a fourth wicket partnership of 100 as Boston posted 198 off 45 overs. In reply, three run-outs helped restrict the hosts to 164-8 and secured 18 points out of 20 for Boston who now sit at the top of the table. Kevin Brooks, Steffen Cook, Haydn Roberts, Azeem Qadir and Dave Gilding all took one wicket apiece, while youngster Matthew Hood turned in a fine display behind the stumps.

Sunday’s rain-swept conditions meant that all of day’s scheduled action was washed out.

May 19-20

Humbling experience for first XI

Boston first XI crashed to a 191-run Lincs ECB Premier League defeat away to Sleaford on a day of considerable humiliation for the Mayflower men. The home side posted a score of 247-7 and then demolished their Boston batting line-up, leaving the visitors with only a paltry 56 runs to their credit. Highlights were few and far between for Boston, notably with nine catches being dropped during the home innings. More positively, bowlers enjoying a degree of success were Mickey Troops (three wickets) plus double-victim achievers Colin Cheer and John Morris. But in batting terms, it was a flop from start to near the finish. At one point Boston were embarrassingly left on 32-9, but managed to get past 50 on the strength of a 24-run partnership by their final pair of the aforementioned Cheer and Morris.

Boston and Sleaford also met at second XI level when South Lincs and Border League points were contested at the Mayflower The visitors included four former Boston players in their ranks and registered a score of 237-5 off their 45 overs. Boston’s wicket-takers were Tim Bell (two), Scott Elleray, Nic Stone and Gareth Epton. In reply, Stone hit an unbeaten 76, but Boston fell short and closed on 197-8. Dave Gilding was second highest scorer on 30.

There was brighter news from Boston third XI, however, in their South Lincs and Border League game against Heckington. The latter made a score of 178-8 off 45 overs, with John Elleray and JP Horton claiming two wickets apiece. Youngster Matthew Poole also claimed his first wicket at senior level. In reply, Boston teetered to 82-6 at one stage, but an excellent stand of 75 between Elleray and Steffen Cook revived things. And skipper Kevin Brooks then hit the winning runs to add to the celebrations of his 47th birthday.

May 12-13

Troops, Young turn on style on rain-hit day

Rain brought a halt to all three Saturday matches involving teams from Boston Cricket Club. But there were still a couple of notable highlights from bowler Mickey Troops and batsman Niall Young from the limited amount of action that unfolded.

The first XI travelled to Grimsby but the match lasted just two overs before the elements closed in and downpours meant the Lincs ECB Premier League encounter had to be abandoned.

The second XI entertained Caythorpe in a South Lincs and Border League tussle. The visitors were put into bat and were restricted to 150 all out, a chief reason behind their downfall being the form of the aforementioned Troops who bagged a hat-trick in his figures of 5-45. But after a break for tea, Boston were unable to complete their innings despite looking well set on 61-1 (Troops 23 not out and Paul Menzies 30 not out) before the rain set in.

The third XI’s home clash with Welby also fell victim to the weather mid-way through, but only after Boston had seen through their innings on a score of 145-5 with debutant Young making a hugely impressive 94.

April 28-29

Fine team show earns tidy points haul

Boston’s first XI secured a welcome haul of Lincs ECB Premier League points with a fine winning draw away to Messingham. A total of 15 points were added to the team’s league tally by virtue of a good all-round display. Boston scored 277 after taking first knock. Conrad Louth top-scored on 81 and gained good support from the likes of skipper Richard Tomlin (38), Jonathan Cheer (31) and Tom Baxter (24). In reply, Messingham reached 261-7 at the conclusion of their 50 overs. Best bowlers for boston were Colin Cheer (4-51) and Dan Milgate (2-98).

Boston seconds were defeated Grantham by four wickets at the Mayflower in a South Lincs and Border League clash.

Grantham were bowled out for 173. Rob Grant took 4-30 while Steffen Cook and JP Horton claimed two wickets apiece. Boston took the lion’s share of rewards when reaching the required total for the loss of six wickets with good batting contributions from Paul Menzies (52) and Alan Mountford (50).

Boston’s scheduled Major Hoult Cup tie against Washingborough tomorrow (Sunday) has been postponed due to a player shortage for the Lincoln-area side. It will now be played at the Mayflower on Bank Holiday Monday, May 7.

On Sunday April 29, the East Lindsey XI made a losing start to their campaign on a really treacherous wicket away to Tetney. Boston were bowled out for just 66, with Conrad Louth (34) the only player to make double figures. With the ball, Boston made substantial inroads, but after slumping to 36-6, Tetney’s seventh wicket pair rallied to see their side through to victory.

April 22

Millgate, Louth are century heroes

Dan Milgate and Conrad Louth both scored huge centuries as Boston third XI opened their South Lincs and Border League Division Two season with a thumping win over Sleaford at the Mayflower. Milgate scored 131 and Louth added a further 147 in a massive team total of 330-3 off 45 overs. In reply, wickets fell at regular intervals, with Andrew Wilson top-scoring for the visitors with 66. Kevin Brooks, JP Horton, Colin Cheer and Jonathan Cheer all took two wickets each to help lead Boston to 20 valuable points.

April 21

Batting collapse sinks first XI hopes

Boston Cricket Club’s first XI missed out on making a good start to their fifth campaign at Lincs ECB Premier League level when they suffered a comprehensive loss at home to Lindum. Despite making a bright start when batting first and reaching 108-1 at one stage, a batting collapse saw them skittled out for just 152. Top scorers were Conrad Louth (55) and skipper Richard Tomlin (40) while Jonathan Cheer made an encouraging 11 in the upper order. There were late contributions of 20 and 14 by Ian Morris and Lee Brooks. But Lindum had little trouble reaching their target. Of the three wickets lost by the visitors, Colin Cheer took two and mickey Troops claimed the other.

Boston seconds lost to Lindum Ramblers despite registering what looked like being a competitive total of 209-3 off 45 overs. Tom Baxter (73 not out) and Steve Elleray (75 not out) batted well for Boston while Scott Elleray emerged as the pick of their bowlers, with 3-46 off 12 overs. Tim Bell and Sam Gilding also took scalps, while two run-outs were executed, but Lindum reached their victory target in the final over with three wickets still intact.

April 16

Teams ready for curtain-raisers

Boston Cricket Club will begin their new season on Saturday (April 21), with the first XI and second XI both facing Lindum. The Lincolnshire ECB Premier League season gets under way, with Boston entertaining their city-based rivals at the Mayflower (noon start). Skipper Richard Tomlin will make his return in Boston colours, while Australian import Dan Milgate is also expected to make his debut.

With second XI captain Alan Mountford set to play for the first XI, Dave Gilding will lead the seconds in their South Lincs and Border League opener at Lindum (1pm start).

On Sunday, Kevin Brooks will lead his third XI troops into battle against Sleaford at the Mayflower (1pm start).

April 14

‘Batsmen’ have edge in friendly

In advance of the new season in earnest, Boston Cricket Club fielded two sides in a “friendly” match at the Mayflower on Saturday. It was billed as a “batting” versus “bowling” encounter with senior players earmarked to represent the first and second XIs being split into separate teams.

In the end, the “batting” side just had the edge. The “bowlers” scored 145 all out with top scorers being Ian Morris 37, Dave Gilding 28, Nic Stone 22 and Scott Elleray 17. Best bowling figures came from Mickey Troops 3-21, John Morris 3-36 and Kev Brooks 1-26. The “batsmen” replied with a score of 146-4. Jonathan Cheer scored 38 with good backing from Richard Tomlin 36 and Paul Menzies 22.

New captain appointed for Boston first XI

A new era is about to dawn for Boston Cricket Club with Richard Tomlin returning to the Mayflower-based club to take a lead role with the first team in readiness for the 2007 campaign in the Lincs ECB Premier League. At an extraordinary general meeting Tomlin — most recently on the books of Sleaford CC — was voted in as the club’s first XI captain for the season ahead. Last season’s star batsman, teenager Conrad Louth will act as vice-captain.

Meanwhile, Louth has been appointed Lincoln League Sunday XI captain for 2007. Gareth Epton will assist him. In addition, teenager Lee Brooks has taken on the role of East Lindsey Sunday XI captain, with Dave Gilding as his deputy.

The fixtures for the various teams run by Boston Cricket Club have now been released. Click here for details or visit the club’s official www.bostoncc.co.uk website.

Nets sessions get under way

Boston Cricket Club connections are already gearing up for the summer of 2007. Net sessions for the club are under way and take place every Sunday. The seniors are catered for between 10am and 11.30am at Kirton Middlecott School while juniors follow on at the same venue from 11.30am to 1pm. Established club members are urged to attend the sessions as regularly as possible while anyone interested in joining in can do so by turning up at one of the allotted times and be assured on a warm welcome. To cover the hall hire charge, sessions cost £3 to attend. Players are asked to bring pads, gloves, helmets and bats. Guidance and advice will be available from a number of the club’s qualified coaches.
