Week ending May 5 THE results of the last two fixtures of the season in
the South Lincolnshire Probus Bowls League made no difference to the top four
positions. The teams in the next five places switch positions. Overall the standard of play improved immensely and made
for a much more competitive and enjoyable season and augurs well for the
future. The winning team, as predicted, was Boston A, under the captaincy of
Probian John Allen. Congratulations go to everyone who played for the team. Elsewhere
Boston played Deepings, winning on two of the four rinks and drawing on one
and the shot aggregate 63-48, giving Boston seven match points to Deepings
three. The results, with the Boston names first, were: G
Wilson, M Penfold, K Hewinson 8, F Gregson, T Roberts, B Wilkinson 20; B
Crannage, B Thompson, K Bycroft 12, J Andrews, J Carpenter, D Crawley 12; M
Bycroft, R Langstaff, B Skelton 20, D Rudkin, R Francis, H Hingle 9; T
Freeston, G Bulman, V Cook 23, R Stevenson, D Osbourne, P Blessett 8. Boston A were hosts to Boston for the second leg of the
local derby. By this time the date of the league table had already been
determined in the name of Boston A. In contention, however, were the two Dick Ward Memorial
Trophies. Unfortunately, the rules governing the format for these matches —
formulated in the days when both Boston Probus teams boasted a much larger
contingent of bowler members — are loaded against Boston A. Boston A have
struggled to produce a full team of their ‘home grown’ players, relying quite
legitimately upon support from members of the Mayflower Probus Club. However,
this has been to the disadvantage of Boston A in contesting the Dick Ward
Trophy. It has been virtually a non-contest and the trophy goes to Boston. The
time has now come for the two captains of Boston A and Boston to agree
mutually, with the donor of this trophy, Probian Ron Bagshaw, to a small
amendment to the rules, which will accommodate the changed circumstances of
today. This will provide a basis for a more serious match in the future! The match results with the Boston A names first were: R
Bagshaw, F Cropley, P Dyer 12, D Aelberry, R Langstaff, B Skelton 17; G
Harris, K Moore (sub), A Eastgate 16, T Freeston, G Bulman, V Cook 11; S
Moore, A Dunnett (MF), J Allen 19, G Wilson, M Penfold, V Murtough 11; R
Thacker, R Holland (MF), D Whelbourne 16, N Bush (MF), P Myers, K Bycroft 11. The Dick Ward Challenge Trophy was won by a Boston rink from the first encounter, with a shot difference of 11. The card result was: G Wilson, G Bulman, V Murtough 20, S Moore, R Bagshaw, J Allen 9. |

Week ending April 14 The final stages of the South Lincolnshire Probus Bowls League are now being contested. And some notable fixtures have been tackled. Boston, playing at home to Springfields won on three of the four rinks and took the shot aggregate by 65 to 41, giving them eight match points to Springfields’ two. The match details, with the Boston names first are: B
Crannage, K Hewinson, K Bycroft 7, J Weller (sub), E Weller, R Hatton 15; T
Freeston, G Bulman, V Cook 17, A Warner, J Sargent, B Herbert 3; G Wilson, M
Penfold, V Murtough 21, G Barsted, I Andrew (sub), C Harvey 14; D Aelberry, R
Langstaff, B Skelton 20, E Marriott, J Ward, D Jex 9. Boston A entertained Deepings and also won three out of
the four rinks. As a result, they took the shot aggregate by a margin of 77
to 44, giving the home team a match points win of 8-2. Surprisingly, the
losing rink for Boston A — under Skip Alan Eastgate — had on their two
previous matches — been the heroes and saviours on both occasions. In each
case they won each of their matches by a large enough difference to give
their team the shot aggregate! The match details with Boston A names first are: G
Harris, P Dyer, A Eastgate 14, J Andrews, T Roberts, L Elliott 20; S Moore, A
Dunnett (MF), J Allen 13, B Rogers, J Carpenter, D Crawley 7; R Bagshaw, R
Holland (MF), D Tebbs 28, B Francis (sub), R Francis, P Blessett 6; R
Thacker, K Moore (sub), D Whelbourn 22, D Rudkin, R Stevenson, B Jary 11. Entering the final stretch, Boston A played away against
Spalding B on April 10 and encountered some still opposition. The rinks points
where shared, but Boston A secured the shot aggregate 63 to 47, giving them
six match points to Spalding B’s four points. This result is not likely to
alter the league table. The match details, with Boston A names first are: G
Harris, R Holland (MF), A Eastgate 18, B Emins, E Spours, E Woodcock 12; R
Bagshaw, F Cropley, P Dyer 14, C Ward, N Crosby, D Newby 16; S Moore, A
Dunnett (MF), D Tebbs 20, D Bemrose, T Nicols, a Holt 7; R Thacker, K Moore
(sub), D Whelbourn 11, A Thorold, D Spencer, H Thomas 12. The top five teams have only one fixture each to be
played. Boston A are the champions, but have relied heavily on the support of
bowlers from Mayflower for most of the season. The second position in the
league is up for grabs, but appears to be a tussle between Sleaford B and
Grantham A. Theoretically Boston could finish second, but barring some sort
of miracle, this seems most unlikely. |

Week ending March 20 The South Lincolnshire Probus Bowls League is now
approaching the point when it should be possible to point to the possible winners.
However, the position is much closer and a lot more difficult to confidently
nominate the outcome. At a guess it looks as if Boston A will run out at the
top of the league, with Sleaford B a close second, pushing Grantham A in to
third position. Boston should finish fourth, for the first time in the last
14 years. In the latest action, Boston played Rutland in an away
fixture at Melton Mowbray. Boston won the aggregate 63-41, losing one rink.
Boston collected eight match points to Rutland’s two. Match results, with the Boston names first, are: M
Penfold (sub), R Langstaff, B Skelton 21, W Stewart, M Blandmer, F Wolloff 3;
B Crannage, B Thompson, K Bycroft 19, R Parkhouse, P Bryan, P Gleeson 9; K
Hewinson, G Bulman, V Cook 5, J Moore, M Hardy, T Blanchard 18; M Bycroft
(sub), M Penfold, V Murtough 18, L Walters, J Pearce, H Wainwright 11. The following day Boston A played a crunch match against
Grantham A at home. This proved a tough nut and Boston A were lucky to win the
shot aggregate, even though they won on only one rink. It was enough to give
Boston A four match points to Grantham A’s six. The match results, with the Boston A names first are: S
Moore, P Dyer, J Allen 14, D Keasley, D Morow, D Hill 15; G Harris, K Moore
(sub), A Eastgate 17, B Gleeave, G Medd, B Bolshaw 5; S Bagshaw (sub), R
Holland (MF), D Tebbs 9, R Paddison, B Garton, J Pask 16; R Bagshaw, F
Cropley, D Whelbourn 14, E Larck, W Selby J Watson 15. Boston A played Spalding A in an away fixture. Boston A
won on two rinks but lost one and drew on the fourth rink. Winning the shot
aggregate 64-44, they secured seven match points to Spalding As three. Match results with the Boston A names first, are: R
Bagshaw, P Dyer, D Tebbs 18, K Quiller, C Fisher, P Godding 10; S Moore, A
Dunnett (MF), J Allen 6, R Dickinson, A Curtis, P Lane 16; R Thacker, F
Cropley, D Whelbourne 14, A Leonard, T Evans, D Pender 14; G Marris, R
Holland (MF), a Eastgate 26, A Harrison, C West, B Robinson 4. Boston A had an unfulfilled fixture from last November,
postponed at the request of Sleaford A. This fixture was played last week.
And once again Boston A had the good fortune to win so well on their only
winning rink that they were able to secure the shot aggregate 63-51 thus giving
Sleaford A only six match points to Boston A’s four. The results, with the Boston A names first are: S Moore,
A Dunnett (MF), J Allen 10, G Beaven, K Troughton, G Cooper 15; R Bagshaw, P
Dyer, D Tebbs 16, M Mumford (sub), R Mumford, A Wills 19; G Harris, R Holland
(MF), a Eastgate 29, P Pratt, J Kime, E Bird 5; R Thacker, F Cropley, D
Whelbourn 8, G Taylor, T Pawson, B summers 12. And finally, Sleaford A rounded off their seasonal
skirmishes against the two Boston teams by sharing the rinks points with
Boston. In their encounter on their home green, they won the shot aggregate
59-42, taking six match points to Boston’s four. The results, with the Boston names first are: D
Aelberry, R Langstaff, B Skelton 15, G Beaven, P Pratt, T Pawson 14; T
Freeston, G Bulman, V Cook 13, K Hopwood, G Taylor, B Summers 10; G Wilson, M

Week ending March 3 Boston A were home to Sleaford A in their latest Probus
League match. Boston A won three of the four rinks and the short aggregate of
84-34, giving the home side eight match points to the visitors’ two. The match details, with the Boston A names first are: A
Dyer (Mrs) (sub), P Dyer, D Tebbs 12, R Thimbleby, D Barr, A Wills 17; S
Moore, A Dunnett (MF), J Allen 17, G Taylor, A Hills, B Summers 7; R Holland
(MF), F Cropley, D Whelbourn 26, G Beaven, K Thoughton, J Dickinson 4; G
Harris, K Moore (Mrs) (sub), A Eastgate 29, E Polley, K Corby, E Bird 6. Next up, Boston A played Springfields at Spalding. From
the scorecards, the entire match appears to have been very one-sided, the
home side winning only 16 ends out of a possible 56. Boston A won the shot
aggregate 73-26, giving them the maximum 10 match points. Match details, with Boston A names first, are: S Moore,
A Dunnett (MF), J Allen 20, C Ward, A Harrison, C Harvey 7; G Harris, C
Hawkesworth (MF), A Eastgate 17, E Marriott, J Ward, D Jex 7; R Thacker, F
Cropley, D Whelbourn 21, T Mason, J Sargeant, D Lake 6; R Holland (MF), P
Dyer, D Tebbs 15, C Ellis, C Beader, R Hatton 6. Boston started March by playing Spalding A. It may be
recalled that in November Boston played Spalding A away and lost all the
match points. So it was with some satisfaction that Boston won three of the
four rinks and the shot aggregate 43-39, in a well contested match, giving
the home side eight match points to the visitors’ two. The results, with the Boston name first, are: D
Aelberry, R Langstaff, B Skelton 10, K Quiller, M Pender, A Holt 7; T
Freeston, G Bulman, V Cook 12, K Gooderson, A Curtis, G West 6; B Crannage, B

Week ending February 10 THE South Lincolnshire Probus Bowls League is entering
its second half. Boston A played Spalding B in a home fixture. It is
significant that Boston A registered their first defeat to a visiting team in
what was the closest of matches, writes Vic Murtough. Two rinks drew 12-12
and 14-14, while Alan Eastgate lost 9-19 and skip Peter Dyer’s rink won
16-12. The shot aggregate favouring Spalding B of 57-51 gave the visitors six
match points to four for Boston A. The match details, with the Boston A names first: G
Harris, E Stevens, A Eastgate 9, R Herd, T Nicholls, D Cocks 19; R Bagshaw, R
Dunnett (MF), D Tebbs 12, B Geary, B Hewson, B Vaughan 12; S Moore, R Holland
(MF), P Dyer 16, C Ward, A Wardman, A Holt 12; F Cropley, C Hawkesworth (MF),
D Whelbourn 14, L Nicholls, N Crosby, D Newby 14. Next up, Boston A were away to Grantham B and won three
of the four rinks quite comfortably, giving them the shot aggregate 60-54 and
eight match points to Grantham Bs two points. The details with the Boston A names first are: S Moore,
R Holland (MF), R Bagshaw 18, A Snowball, G Down, A Watchorn 13; A Dyer
(sub), A Dunnett (MF), D Whelbourn 9, J Arthur, L Burrell, T Holmes 21; S
Bagshaw (sub), P Dyer, D Tebbs 17, D Holme, J Dobney, F Rivers 11; G Harris,
E Stevens, A Eastgate 16, G Chilvers, P Montague, T Gostik 9. Later on, Boston had the pleasure of playing against
Sleaford B, the latter are arguably the most improved team in the league. The
rink points were shared. For Boston skip Bernard Skelton’s rink has thing
down up, winning 21-7, but Sleaford B, too, had their special talent which
shone on the day winning 21-4 against. Skip Ken Bycroft’s rink, giving the
visitors the shot aggregate 60-56 and six match points to Boston’s four
points. Details, with the Boston name first, are: T Freeston, G
Bulman, V Cook 16, M Sallis, B Jennings, B Srawley 18; G Wilson, B Crannage,
V Murtough 15, J Rudkin, S Elliott, T Barnes 14; B Thompson, K Hewinson, K
Bycroft 4, D Dann, T Baker, R Hannah 21; D Welberry, R Langstaff, B Skelton
21, B Hill, D Barr, B Patterson 7. The league table (featured below) clearly demonstrates
the improving competition at the top of the league and for the first time in
over two decades the challenge is no longer confined to the Grantham and
Boston based team. Sleaford B are presenting a determined attack on the top
position and any unexpected reverses encountered by Boston A during the rest
of the season, could find Sleaford B in the lead. This is good for the health
of the Probus League and augurs well for the future. |

Week ending January 20 Boston A played Rutland on their home green at Melton
Mowbray. Boston A took the shot aggregate 71-46 and won on all four rinks to
give them maximum 10 points. Starting the last end Rutland were leading 11-8
against skip Mick Blandamer’s rink, but they contrived to drop seven shots
and finished up losing 15-11 against skip Alan Eastgate’s rink. The match details with the Boston A names first were: R

the final end, were trailing on the score sheet by one shot (12-13) on skip
Ken Bycroft’s rink but were lying four shots. The bell called time, and the
Grantham B skip Joe Doran had one bowl to play. He fired, made contact and
killed the end giving his rink a win 13-12 and a valuable two match points.
Boston won comfortably on the other three rinks giving them eight match
points. The results, with the Boston names first, are: T Freeston, G Bulman, V Cook 20, F Arthur, J Hutchinson, G Holmes 11; D Aelberry, R Langstaff, B Skelton 20, L Borrel, M Snowball, T Gostick 7; B Thompson, K Hewinson, K Bycroft 12, M Laws, A Watchorn, J Doran 13; G Wilson, B Cranage, V Murtough 18, G Dunn, D Holme, F Rivers 9. |

Week ending January 6 In the South Lincolnshire Probus Bowls League, Boston A
played Sleaford B in their final fixture of 2005. Boston A shared the rink points with their visitors,
winning the shot aggregate 55-39, thus giving Boston A the extra match points
by 6-4. The match details, with the Boston A names first are: R
Thacker, F Cropley, P Dyer 7, D Dann, T Baker, R Hannah 18; G Harris, e
Stevens, A Eastgate 8, D Murray, C Elliott, T Barnes 11; S Moore, A Dunnett,
J Allen 19, E Rudkin, R Britchford, B Srawley 5; R Bagshaw, R Holland, D
Tebbs 21, J Rudkin, D Barr, B Patterson 5. Boston were then hosts to Spalding B as the new year
started and were able to reverse the results of the early season encounter,
winning three rinks and the shot aggregate 58-37. It gave Boston eight match
points to Spalding B’s two points. The match details are, with Boston names first: B Thompson, K Hewinson, K Bycroft 12, B Gary, B Hewson, E Woodcock 9; D Aelberry, R Langstaff, B Skelton 20, B Emmins, A Wardman, A Holt 11; T Freeston, M Penfold, V Cook 11, E Hannah, T Cross, M Cocks 14; G Wilson, B Crannage, V Murtough 15, D Best, D Spencer, D Duckworth 3. |

Week ending December 18 The South Lincolnshire Probus Bowls League is now at its
half-way stage. The most recent league table places Boston A at the top by a
handsome margin. As things stand at the moment, Boston A look like being the
favourite to win the title. Most of the clubs in the league appear to have
strengthened their teams, largely from new members wishing to join the Probus
fraternity. Boston A have struggled to maintain sufficient numbers
to produce a full team without substitutes and have reached agreement with
the league secretary to include members of the Mayflower Probus Club on a regular
basis. This is not without precedent, since some members of the Probus 88
Club of Grantham appear to have reach a similar agreement. It does mean that
these teams now present formidable opposition. Most recently Boston were hosts to Sleaford A. As seems
to be the norm these days, Boston had to reply on a couple of substitutes to
complete their team. Boston won three of the four rinks and the shot
aggregate, 64-48, giving Boston eight match points to Sleaford A two points.
The results, with the Boston names first are, T Freeston, G Bulman, K
Hewinson 10, G Taylor, A Wills, B Summers 13; D Aelberry, R Langstaff, B
Skelton 17, B Barron, R Mumford, T Pawson 12; M Bycroft (Mrs), B Thompson, K
Bycroft 23, R Thimbleby, J Kime, E Bird 12; B Crannage, J Mews (Mrs), V Cook
14, P Pratt, K Troughton, K Corby 11. Boston then travelled to Spalding against Springfields.
Still experiencing a shortfall of players due to the unfortunate car accident
in early November, Boston were pleased to be able to call on a couple of
willing substitutes. Interestingly, Springfield — who normally have a strong
contingent of players at their disposal — also had to call upon a substitute.
After a close encounter, with the rink points being shared, Springfield won
the shot aggregate by a single shot, 50-49, giving them six match points, and
Boston four points. The match details, with Boston names first are, T
Freeston, M Penfold, K Hewinson 7, J Weller (Mrs), R Hatton, M Tyler 11; M
Penfold (Mrs), B Thompson, K Bycroft 9, C Ellis, C Harvey, L Sketcher 13; B
Crannage, J Mews (Mrs), V Cook 16, E Marriott, I Ward, D Jex 12; D Aelberry,
R Langstaff, B Skelton 17, T Mason, B Earth, J Taylor 14. Rounding off the year for Boston was an away game
against Grantham B. Boston looked like collecting maximum points, but it was
not to be. Skip Keith Hewinson’s rink leading 16-11 on the 13th end,
inexplicably managed to drop a three and a four on the last two ends, giving
Grantham B two points. So Boston finished with three winning rinks and the
shot aggregate 80-38. The results, with Boston names first, are: B Crannage,
G Bulman, K Hewinson 16, A Watchorn, F Rivers, T Gostick 18; S Bagshaw (Mrs),
B Rippin, V Murtough 16, J Arthur, P Montague, G Pearson 5; D Aelberry, R
Langstaff, B Skelton 13, M Laws, G Dunn, T Holmes 12; M Bycroft (Mrs), B
Thompson, K Bycroft 35, C Rolt, A Jones, G Modd 3. Boston A played their first fixture of the month against
Deepings at Stamford. Though Boston A won the aggregate and three of the four
rinks, it was a close score 53-49. Boston A collected eight match points. The
match details, with Boston A names first, are: S Moore, A Dunnett, J Allen
16, W Hacking, J Carpenter, L Elliott 11; G Harris, R Holland, P Dyer 10, J
Andrews, R Stevenson, P Blessett 15; R Bagshaw, F Cropley, C Hawkesworth 14,

Week ending November 20 It is many years since the Boston team
returned from a visit to Spalding A without anything to show for their
efforts in a Lincolnshire Probus Bowls League match. But that is what happened in the latest
round of matches — however, the trip will be remembered for travel hold-ups
and a road accident on the return trip that left three Boston members shaken
and one needing a hospital visit. Of the match action itself, Spalding A collected the maximum 10 points. Skip Bas Rippin lost 11-12 on the last end. Skip Vic Murtough’s rink lost 6-9. The opposition’s nine shots remarkably coming via a single shot win on each of nine ends! The match details, with Boston names first,
are: T Freeston, M Penfold, K Hewinson 7, B Garrett, C Fisher, P Godding 21;
D Aelberry, R Langstaff, B Rippin 11, R Dickinson, B Robinson, P Lane 12; B
Thompson, B Skelton, K Bycroft 7, A Leonard, R King, D Ponder 13; G Wilson, G
Bulman, V Murtough 6, J Gill, A Curtis, C Cronin 9. Boston were due to play Sleaford B at
Sleaford next. But due to the accident already documented, the Boston team
was short of players. However, with the assistance of substitutes, Boston
were able to honour their commitment. The match results show it was a very close
game on three rinks. Skip Keith Hewinson’s rink enjoyed a good win (17-9),
which was sufficient to give Boston the shot aggregate 54-45, and seven match
points to Sleaford B three points. Results, with Boston names first, are: M
Penfold (Mrs), B Skelton, K Bycroft 11, D Murray, J Rutkin, S Elliott 11; D
Aelberry, S Bagshaw (Mrs), R Langstaff 14, D Dann, J Beavis, T Baker 12; M
Bycroft (Mrs), M Penfold, V Cook 12, M Sallis, B Jennings, B Srawley 13; T
Freeston, M Hewinson (Mrs), K Hewinson 17, B Hill, D Barr, B Patterson 9. Boston A were in action against away to
Grantham A. And they were pleased to win on three rinks. The shot aggregate
of 61-46 gave them eight points. Match details, with Boston A names first,
are: G Harris, E Stevens, A Eastgate 11, A Hughes, A Howard, J Pask 8; S
Cropley, A Dunnett, P Dyer 15, B Roberts, L Newton, J Watson 13; S Moore, R
Holland, R Bagshaw 21, R Paddison, M Barrett, K Palmer 10; R Thacker, I
Stimson, D Whelbourne 14, D Kearey, J Morris, D Hill 15. Boston A also played Rutland in an away
fixture and Grantham B at Boston, winning both games, and collecting maximum

Week ending October 23 BOSTON
A have played two more matches in the South Lincolnshire Probus Bowls League.
First they played Sleaford B in an away fixture and achieved a good result against
an ever-improving opponent. Boston A won on three rinks and the aggregate,
giving them eight match points to Sleaford B’s 2. Next
up, Boston A were home to Spalding A and again, Boston A won on three rinks
and the aggregate, securing eight match points to the visitors’ two points.
The provision of match details for publication in the media, rests with the
team captains. Disappointed readers should appreciate that any relevant
omission of information is not the preference or choice of the reporter. Elsewhere,
Boston travelled to Stamford to play against Deepings. It is good to meet new
members, of which Deepings appear to have a goodly number. This reflects also
in the stronger opposition encountered on the green. Boston won on two rinks,
drew on one of the rinks, and lost on the other rink, giving Boston the
aggregate 57-51, with seven match points to Deepings’ three points. The
match results (with the Boston names first) are: B Thompson, B Skelton, K
Bycroft 23, H Hingle, D Rudkin, T Smith 11; D Aelberry, B Crannage, B Rippin
11, B Rogers, B Wilkinson, P Blessett 11; G Wilson, G Bulman, V Murtough 14,
R Stevenson, R Francis, D Crawley 13; M Penfold, V Cook, K Hewinson 9, T
Roberts, J Carpenter W Jary 16. Last
Thursday Boston (at home) played Grantham A. It was good to see the familiar
faces of Keith Palmer (previous captain), John Pask and David Hill their
current captain. Grantham a finished third in the league table last season,
but they are always opposition to be reckoned with! So, it was a pleasant
surprise for Boston with the shot aggregate of 73-50 to finish with eight
match points to Grantham A’s two. The
match details (with the Boston names first) are: D Aelberry, B Crannage, B
Rippin 17, T Bromfield, B Garton, J Pask 15; M Penfold, V Cook, K Hewinson
18, R Paddison, A Howard, K Palmer 20; B Thompson, B Skelton, K Bycroft 18, D

Week ending October 2 THE South Lincolnshire Probus Bowls League began with
the usual curtain raiser between the two local teams, Boston and Boston A.
Quite apart from the significance of the league itself, the two local teams
contest the memorial trophies presented in the memory of Probian Dick Ward,
the captain of Boston A at the time of his untimely death. The rules governing this contest require the matches to
be played between members of the Boston Probus Club only. The inclusion of
any substitutes automatically results in the forfeiture of the points scored
by an offending rink. It was, therefore, unfortunate and disappointing that
Boston A had some difficulty in raising their normal team, having to reply
upon substitutes in order to complete their fixture commitment. Boston A won
the aggregate 64-56 with the rink points being shared. They started the
season with an overall win of six match points to four points to Boston. The match details, with the Boston A names first: S
Moore, R Bagshaw, J Allen 9, G Wilson, G Bulman, V Murtough 20; R Sykes, A
Dunnett (sub), P Dyer 14, T Freeston, B Crannage, K Hewinson 19; G Harris, D
Tebbs (sub), A Eastgate 19, D Aelberry, R Langstaff, B Skelton 7; R Thacker,
E Sylvester (sub), D Whelbourn 22, B Thompson, M Penfold, K Bycroft 10. Boston played Spalding B in an away game. Once again the
rink points were shared, but Spalding B secured the aggregate score 46-43,
giving them six match points to Boston’s four points. Spalding B, as always,
provided stiff opposition. And this result proved that nothing has changed. The results, with the Boston names first, are: B
Thompson, B Skelton, K Bycroft 14, C Ward, B Hewson, A Thorold 9; D Aelberry,
R Langstaff, B Rippin 17, L Nicholls, W Brace, E Woodcock 6; T Freeston, M
Penfold, K Hewinson 7, R Herd, D Cocks, H Thomas 17; M Bycroft (sub), G
Bulman, V Murtough 5, D Best(sub), B Geary, A Holt 14. Next up, Boston A were hosts to Springfields. Details of
the match are not available, but Boston A won on all four rinks and gave
their start of the season a welcome boost with a maximum of 10 points.
Finally, Boston ended the month with a win over visiting team Rutland, giving
Boston a maximum of 10 points. Although the shot aggregate of 73-24 favoured
the home team hugely. It was no indication of the quality of play and more
importantly, for a Probus game, it did not reflect the enormous pleasure
enjoyed by both teams, followed by a full attendance by both teams at lunch.
This is what the Probus spirit is about! The results, with the Boston names first, are: I
Murtough(sub), B Skelton, K Bycroft 26, R Parkhouse, M Walters (sub), W
Stewart 1; B Thompson, M Hewinson(sub), K Hewinson 18, L Walters, V Crowder
(sub), M Blandamer 6; D Aelberry, N Bush(sub), B Rippin 15, E Wright(sub), J
Pearce, P Ferry 7; B Crannage, J Myers (sub), V Murtough 14, M Evans(sub), N
