Latest reports round-up for the 2006-2007 season NOVEMBER 06

Week ending November 24:

Stonehaven Care Home Division One

The top two teams plus Cosmos in fourth spot all claimed maximum points this week. Holland Fen versus Crusaders saw the former’s top man Mick Tomlin struggling to keep his team in contention. He was, therefore, hugely grateful to pick up three counts of four plus a five on his way to a 24-17 win. Hazel Marshall also struggled when trailing 13-10. But her rink secured the points thanks to a strong finish when picking up 16 shots to just one dropped to win 26-14.

Second placed Eastenders’ result went with the form book. Matched against bottom side Swineshead, skips Simon Reeson and Paul Flatters won 20-14 and 18-12.

A40 were on a bye week and this gave Cosmos the chance to climb a place. What should have been the division’s game of the night against Carlton Road, it turned out to be something of a damp squib, the latter turning up with only three players. Cosmos took the forfeited rink and added the other points with a 19-17 rink win.

Stumpers and rustics shared the rink points while the overall aggregate went to Stumpers. For Rustics, skip John Sivill won 19-14. Replying for Stumpers, Sheila Gall, Norman Bush and Bernard Skelton enjoyed a strong finish to win 25-17.

Invaders were too strong for the Jolly Farmers. Scott Whyers plus Sandra and Ian Tebbs won 27-9 while Mick Roberts, Sally and Paul Gurton edged out joe Moore 19-15.

Kirton town, matched against IBC saw all the points go to the Town. Jeff Homewood, Jill Smith and Dorothy Hawkesworth played against IBC’s top set of June Burman, Ruth Wright and Reg Doughty and won 19-12. Ann Kemp, Sheila Tracey and Peter Tracey had a 10-7 lead after 11 ends against Richard toy, Denis Ellis and Ted Bourne and went on to win 23-9.

Other divisional reports will be added shortly.

Week ending November 17:

Stonehaven Care Home Division One

Eastenders dished out a decisive defeat on fellow title hopefuls A40 when cruising to a 6-0 success. A40’s Gill Grant, Maggie Kisby and Sheila King were 15-9 down at 13 ends but fought back to trail by just one shot 17-16 with the last end remaining. However, they dropped a count of three and the Enders set of Andrew Limb, Ian Clark and Paul Flatters won 20-16. On the other rink, Matt Dawson, Jean Cammack and John McKay were under the cosh for most of the game, losing 25-10. Enders’ skip Andrew Reeson, with Matt Whyers and Tony Powell, may have had a touch of good fortune when A40 briefly laid a cracking five. But when you are on top, luck generally goes with you.

Freelanders, after the previous week’s loss, put out a much more evenly balanced team this week against Jolly Farmers. Ron Thacker, Derek Whelbourn and Jeff Nicholson won 29-13 while Brian Sharp, Geoff Taylor and Stan Lawrence scraped home 14-13 for a full six-point haul.

Second-from-bottom Crusaders shocked Stumpers by recording a surprise 4-2 win. Meanwhile, Invaders — who started their campaign well — have now not won since week five. Matched against leaders Holland Fen, they fell heavily on both rinks. The latter’s Andrew Grant, Adrian Field and Martin Tomlin won 28-15 while Keith Tointon, Hazel Marshall and Mick Tomlin, with the game virtually over at end 10, won 36-11.

T and B Containers Division Two

The Gang were the only team in the top four to pick up maximum points and, with Woodhall on a bye week, moved into second spot. Matched against Shunters, Pete Vines, Keith Hewinson and Mary Hewinson were trailing 6-7 at six ends but then ran away with the game 26-13. Meanwhile, David Tebbs, Rita Epton and Dennis Tebbs also won comfortably 22-8.

Royal Mail, in fourth place, were matched against Norprint. Mail’s top set surprisingly suffered a defeat. Joan Sharp, Barry Harrington and Keith Sharp fell to Dave Toynton, Margaret Broughton and Chris Avison by a 20-11 margin. Mail’s Ken Sharman, Ted Bloodworth and Barry Barton were evenly matched at seven ends but went away to win 30-10 for the extra points.

Leaders Breakaways have the luxury of points advantage so two points dropped against Feathers did not do them too much harm. Janet Whyers, Gloria French and Hugh Stevens finished strongly to win 25-12. John Whyers, Eileen Brown and Lorraine Stevens were 14-6 up against Dick Masters, Sheila Dawson and Ray Matson but then tumbled to a 22-16 defeat.

Strollers’ game with Patriachs went according to the form book. But it was not easy for Strollers as, at the half-way stage, they had only a four-shot advantage overall. Dave France, Bob Pearce and Alex Seaton (8-8 at 11 ends) went away to win 20-12 while Ken Haigh, Bill Barton and Ray Hobart finished with a 23-14 success.

Golfers swung in with a maximum six-points haul against lowly Robins. Here, Dave Locking, David Smith and Norman Ablard won 25-14 while Bill Smith, Mick Nundy and Graham Scarboro won 19-15.

There was also a maximum points harvest for Stickney in their game against Butchers. For the victors, Steve Shaw, Ray Bavin and Brian Hooker recorded a slender 16-15 success while there was a much more impressive and comfortable victory of 23-11 for Angela Saxton, Graham Tooley and Ron Flower.

Benton’s Glazing Division Three

Table-topping Highflyers came off the green with all the points when matched against Shipmates. The victory took Highflyers up to the 50-point mark for the campaign to date.

Elsewhere, Vikings got the better of Abrasives by a 4-2 match points scoreline. Winning set for the Vikings was that comprising Geoff Barnes, Ron Moore, Gordon Gallichan who won 27-10. Abrasives replied in the guise of Charles Russell, Maureen Brammer, Sue Bridges who scored a narrow 22-20 success.

Traders took on Central, but netted only two of the six point available. Their rewards came via an 18-11 rink win for Maurice Harding, Ray Robinson and Pete Coulson. But Central replied with a 21-13 victory for David Clark, Hazel Clark and Frank Bembridge, which was enough to claim the aggregate.

Punchbowlers claimed a full haul of match points from their game against Crowns. But things were extremely close in one of the rinks where Les Kelly, Terry Dawson and Barry Julian sneaked in with a 19-18 win. It was much more comfortable on the other rink, though, where Charlie Reeson, Jeff Skelton and Richard Bell won 26-15.

Bottom team Terriers leap-frogged Shipmates when they picked up two points against BBC, for whom Sid Cropley, Rene Howes and Margaret Kirk won four points. Replying for Terriers, Fran King, Eric Pereira and Bill Earth, up 22-6, should have won the aggregate but Mu Watson’s set pocketed 11 shots without reply.

Week ending November 10:

Stonehaven Care Home Division One

The three teams chasing Holland Fen at the top all picked up maximum points in their latest matches. Eastenders, on paper, had what looked like the hardest opposition. Freelanders, matched against the Enders, put out an under-strength team and paid the penalty Andrew Limb, Ian Clark and Paul Flatters for the Enders were 9-7 up at eight ends and had a period of power play to establish a 16-9 lead at 13 ends. They finished with a 22-12 success. Matt Whyers, Tony Powell and Simon Reeson were never under any pressure and emerged emphatic winners by 24-9.

A40 were matched against Rustics and skips Mick Asplen and Sheila King claimed the points via 22-13 and 28-9 successes. Next week’s game will test A40 when Eastenders are the opponents.

Cosmos won their points with Royce Reynolds, Chris Hiom and Abb French winning 29-8 while Michael Emery, Sue Simpson and Les Feary secured a 19-12 victory to leave Jolly Farmers as pointless finishers.

The leaders Holland Fen were matched against bottom side Swineshead whose set of Jeanet Vinter, Jean Thompson and Bob Thompson picked up two extremely good points when matched against Keith Tointon, Fred Kirk and Mick Tomlin. Trailing 12-7 at nine ends, they picked up 10 shots to one against to go 17-13 ahead. And then they eased clear 21-17. It was two points dropped by the Fenmen when least expected and they had to rely on Bazza Wilson, Hazel Marshall and Peter Gorbutt to win four points for the side by virtue of a decisive 31-8 rink win.

The match between Stumpers and Invaders saw the former win four points, the last few ends being vital. For Invaders, Sally Gurton, Ken Rochford and Paul Gurton dropped a count of one on the first end. And that was the only time they were behind as they powered home 21-12 against Barry Richardson’s set. Stumpers’ top set of Margaret Bycroft, Norma Barnes and Ken Bycroft overpowered their rivals to win 26-8.

IBC showed some indifferent form in their clash with Carlton Road. They went down to the Road’s skips of Geoff Parker and Alan Coupland by scores of 44-6 and 23-15 respectively.

T & B Containers Division Two

The Robins at long last have secured victory. Up against Shunters, they picked up all six points. Janet Pape, Eileen Sellars and John Riches were evenly matched against Mathew Smith, Rod West and Norman Wright. The former trio led 9-8 at 10 ends and went on to secure a 17-14 success. Neil Lockwood, Terry Hall and Arnold Pape were level 12-12 at 13 ends but then went into overdrive to run out 24-14 winners.

Not to be outdone by the Robins, Patriachs picked up their second win of the campaign when they collected five points at the expense of Stickney. Darren Little, Michelle Dobbs and Ray Woods had a massive lead at nine ends and comfortably went on to win 21-9. Marie Woods, Alan Woods and Seamus Rooney were 13-9 down at 15 ends but fought back to tie 17-17 for another point.

Woodhall, in second place and third-placed Gang were both hoping to close in on the top team. But both only managed two points. Woodhall were up against the Strollers. For Woodhall, Doreen Sharp, Alan Eastgate and Eric Ulyatt had a topsy-turvy game but hung on to win 22-2o. Richard Whitaker, William Busby and Tom Richardson went behind on the sixth end and remained behind as Ray Hobart, Ken Haigh and Alan Everitt won four points with a success of 20-12.

The Gang, up against the Feahters, lost the aggregate by just two shots. For the Gang, Pete Vines, Keith Hewinson and Mary Hewinson were winning 18-5 at 15 ends and looked in control of the aggregate points. The Feathers’ set of Maureen Hunn, Richard sharp and Derek Hunn had other ideas and picked up 10 shots without reply to close the margin down with a loss of 20-15 that swung the aggregate points around. Meanwhile, Beryl Brewster, Tony Dawson and Sheila Dawson were 13-12 up at 18 ends and finished up by winning 21-14 to secure four points for the Feahters.

Royal Mail picked up their third successive six-point haul. Matched against the Butchers’ Joan Sharp, Barry Harrington and Keith Sharp they won 26-8. Ken Sharman, Barry Barton and Keith Thorlby were 18-7 ahead at one point but then had to scramble home in a 21-17 result.

The Amateurs versus Norprint saw the former grab the aggregate points. For the Printers, Ralph Pick, Margaret Broughton and chris Avison won 22-15. Replying for the Amateurs, Jonathan West, Albert Batchelor and Phil Sharp were 9-6 down after 10 ends but then scored on all but two of the remaining ends played to win 22-12.

Benton’s Glazing Division Three

The game of the week in this division was the top-of-the-table clash between Highflyers and Parthians. Level on points, it was the Flyers who claimed the lion’s share of the points. For Parthians, Gerald Horrey, Malc Rogers and Mick Atkin won 18-13. Replying for the Flyers, Linda Garner, Peter Hoyles and Barry Trigg won 21-13 to secure the aggregate and earn four points.

Third placed Vikings were hoping to stay in contention but surprisingly failed to win any points. Matched against Traders, skips Ray Blackamore and Ron Holmes went down 23-14 and 27-16 respectively to rival skips Cyn Baker and Norman Stanley.

After the previous week’s maximum against high-riding Parthians, Wranglers kept up the momentum and picked up a further six points from their game with Punchbowlers. Derek Green, Tony Drury and Malc Nichols trailed 5-13 at nine ends, were 16-14 in front after 16 ends and then dropped counts of one, one and two to fall behind 18-16. However, they claimed a count of three on the last end to clinch a slender 19-18 win. Brian Simpson, Fleur simpson and Russ Rousell established a comfortable 15-3 lead at 12 ends to claim the rest of the points with an excellent 18-11 success.

Abrasives, after last week’s disappointing result, bounced back right away with a maximum points success against the Fairways. Derek Cooper, Maureen Brammer and Ray Wagstaff won 23-8 while Ivan Stimson, Ann Wys and Dave Bridges just hung on to claim a 16-15 success.

The bottom two sides were matched against each other. And it was the higher of the pair, Burton, who had the ascendancy. For Terriers, Phyl Rickett, R Peter King and Rosemary Hoskins trailed 12-9 but picked up counts of four and one to win 14-12. For the Burtons, Olive Fenner, Jim Fenner and Peter Dodes sealed the win with a 26-13 success to earn four points.

The Crowns, after last week’s success against high-riding Abrasives, kept up their good work with another good result. Matched against fourth placed Central, they claimed four of the six available points. Winning for Central were Tracey Bembridge, Iris Facey and Fred Epton. The Crowns replied with a successful scorecard of 21-13 from Graham Mulholland, Lee Mulholland and George Rennison.

Denny Cup

Boston got off to a successful start to their Denny Cup crusade with a 76-74 result against Bassetlaw. It proved an exciting finish as, trailing by five shots with two ends remaining (one at Bassetlaw and one at Boston), Les Feary at Bassetlaw picked up a count of four while Mick Tomlin on the home green collected a count of three as the team won by just two shots. The next game is against Scunthorpe on November 18 with a 10am start.

Week ending November 3:

Stonehaven Care Home Division One

Holland Fen were given a stern test by IBC and only managed to win the aggregate points by one shot. For IBC, June Burman and Ruth Wright outplayed the Fen front end of Adrian Field and Hazel Marshall while skip Reg Doughty was still on the backburner. Trailing 15-6 at 12 ends, Martin Tomlin had to pull out the stops to try to save the Fen. But the task proved too much for Tomlin as the next six ends saw IBC gain 13 shots to one against, which saw them into a lead that won them two points. The Fen’s other rink of Andrew Gaunt, Fred Kirk and Mick Tomlin (9-9 at 10 ends, 12-11 at 15 ends) managed a 19-17 win to claim the aggregate points.

Carlton Road took all the points when match against Freelanders, though Alex Tomlin, Chris Gill and Geoff Parker trailed 15-8 with 11 ends played. The next six ends saw them bring a different game to the green as they picked up 14 shots without reply, and they finished up winning 25-19. John Rylott, John Benton and Roy Vinter saw off the opposition in both halves of the game to win 28-12.

A40 saw off a stern test put up by an enforced reshuffled Kirton Town team. Bex Field, Mathew Dawson and Mick Asplen (11-7 up at 12 ends) trailed 14-11 at 17 but Town did not pick up their advantage and A40 picked up six shots without reply to win 17-14. Jean Cammack, Maggie Kisby and John McKay (10-10 at 12 ends and 20-11 ahead at 18 ends) eased home 20-17.

Rustics versus Jolly Farmers saw the latter take the lion’s share of the points. For Rustics, Audrey Sivill, Alan Saunby and John Sivill were matched against Shirley Moore, Daryl Gardner and Joe Moore and gained a 17-14 success. Ray Reeson, Keith Woods and John Craft were 7-2 up at six ends but the Farmers’ set made positional changes and moved Dave Allen to the lead position where he, Chris and Allan Bristow forged ahead to win 26-18 for four points.

The Cosmos set of Royce Reynolds, Chris Hiom and Abb French had a pretty comfortable ride against Crusaders in winning 31-14. But that was not the case for George Phillips, Michael Emery and Les Feary who trailed 20-13 with 14 ends played against Carol Cliffe, Margaret Chester and Chris Clarke. But here the Crusaders trio dropped 16 shots while only picking up three as Cossies triumphed 29-23.

Stumpers, after making a clean sweep against Cossies last week, could only manage four points against bottom team Swineshead this time out. The latter’s two points came from Janet Vinter, Pam Dawson and Brian Vinter with a 17-15 win. Picking up the four points for Stumpers were Gerry Myers, Denis Robins and Barry Richardson with a 24-18 success.

T & B Containers Division Two

The early session saw three maximum points hauls. Breakaways were too good for Stickney and picked up six points to widen their lead at the top to eight points. Janet Whyers, Lorraine and “Hugh” Stevens picked up 12 shots without reply to win the points 22-13. Keith Bailey, John Marshall and Alan Saxton were also evenly matched (11-12 down at 14 ends and 17-16 up at 19 ends) but finished with a three and four shot returns to win 23-17.

Third in the league Woodhall were matched against second placed the Gang. The game saw Woodhall win on both rinks to leapfrog their rivals in the table. For the Gang, Harry Dodd, Ivan Dilley and John Allen fell to the firing skills of Ruby Salmon. Leading 15-7 and then holding shots on the 13th end, Ruby produced the “big gun” and scored a count of five. She then picked up another seven shots in the next three ends which put her in the lead at 19-16 and the opposition did not recover from the body blow and went down 21-20. Pete Vines, Rita Epton and Dennis Tebbs picked up a count of four on the first end but fell behind on the fifth end as Richard Whitaker, Alan Eastgate and Tom Richardson for Woodhall clinched the points with a 24-16 scoreline.

Royal Mail are slowly climbing up the table and now sit just seven points away from a promotion spot. Matched against the Strollers they produced winning scorecards of 27-15 and 25-10.

Patriachs picked up two good points from Norprint and they will be telling themselves it could so easily have been six. Mark Bennett, Mitchell Dobbs and Ray Woods (15-3 up) eased up and allowed Barbara Kenny, Roy Broughton and Ralph Pick to come back into the game and the scoreline finished 16-13. Tina Bennett, Alan Woods and Seamus Rooney (16-13 ahead at 16 ends) had a bit of a hiccup as Pam Vinter, Alan Townsend and Tony Hall found themselves in the lead 23-16 then hung on for a 23-18 success and four points for the printers.

Amateurs would have been expecting a better result than they got in their game with lowly Golfers. Anthony Tabor, Sam Leafe and Eric Taylor won 23-13 for Amateurs, but David Locking, Ron Hulley and Peter Dyer finished with a 27-9 to take the extra points for Golfers.

Robins still have a zero in the win column as we go into week nine of this season’s competition. Matched against Feathers, they fell on both rinks. Beryl Brewster, Tony Dawson and Sheila Dawson won 29-13 and Maureen Hunn, Keith Posey and Ray Matson (leading 8-7 at nine ends) went away to secure all the points 27-10.

Benton’s Glazing Division Three

Parthians, who were looking unassailable in their opening games, were given a shock this week when they lost on both rinks in their match against struggling Wranglers. Gerald Horrey, Malc Rogers and Mick Atkin were undone on rink one by the Wranglers’ Brian Simpson, Maurice Young and Malc Nichols 23-10. Diane Bedford, Pauline Atkin and Pete Bedford put up a fight before going down to Derek Green, Tony Drury (is this his best position?) and Stuart Green 17-16.

Punchbowlers and Vikings shared the rink points, but it was the higher-placed team, Vikings, who claimed the aggregate. These came from Barbara Moore, Ron Moore and Gordon Gallichan with a win of 19-12.

Central and Shipmates also shared the rink points, with the aggregate going to Central by just one shot. For Shipmates, Betty Taylor, Brian Hunn and John Balderson edged a 17-16 win. Replying for Central were Tracey Bembridge, Iris Facey and Fred Epton who produced the win with a scoreline of 19-17.

The Crowns this week didn’t exactly dazzle (or did they?) John Adcock, Sandra Copeland and Graham Mulholland were 17-3 up at 13 ends against Abrasives’ Ivan Stimson, Ann Wys and Dave Bridges and found themselves hanging on for a 17-16 win. Margaret Dixon, Brian Blackbourn and captain Pete Copeland (7-7 at seven ends, 16-9 at 12 and 16-16 at 18) picked up two counts of one to win 18-17.

BBC picked up their first maximum points haul of the season at the expense of Fairways. Len Tokley, Margaret Kirk and Mu Watson won 23-15 while Sue Upsall, Rene Howes and Derek Richmond enjoyed a 20-12 success.

Second placed Highfleyers were matched against bottom team the Terriers and should have picked up all the points. But the bottom team had other ideas and Fran King, Eric Pereira and Bill Earth (did he have his best game of the season so far?) were well placed at 13-13 at 13 ends before having a purple patch to put themselves into an unassailable position before running out 22-16 winners. The flyers had to rely on Joy Tory, Robert Goodale and Alan Watson for the lion’s share of the points with a 23-10 win that clinched the overall aggregate. With the previous leaders losing, the Flyers took top spot on shots difference.

Yetton Trophy

The Boston team started their Yetton Trophy campaign with an 87-57 success against Horncastle. Next up is a difficult game against Lincoln on November 30, start time 10am.
