Week ending March 30:

Stonehaven Care Home Division One

Eastenders virtually made sure of lifting the top division title for the first time with a solid performance against IBC. Andrew Limb, Ian Clarke and Paul Flatters led 15-3 at six ends before Alan Bates, Denis Ellis and Ted Bourne made the score a little more respectable by winning four of the final five ends. The scoreline, eventually, was 23-18. Reg Doughty for IBC makes things happen in every game he plays and Simon Reeson (skipping for Matt Whyers and Tony Powell) had to be at his best to secure a 19-18 success for the Enders. The leaders’ last game is against Kirton Town and they need just one point at the same time that nearest rivals Holland Fen play basement side Rustics. Will there be some shock results? Somewhat doubtful!

Cosmos in third spot saw off the challenge of Rustics with wins of 21-17 and 22-11 for skips Les Feary and Keith French.

The fourth and fifth placed teams played each other. Carlton Road had the advantage on shots difference but found themselves down a position as A40 moved four points ahead. For the Road, Phil Harris, John Benton and John Reylott won 20-12 against Jean Cammack, John McKay and Mick Asplen. Doing a good job for A40 were Maggie Kisby, Arnold Bennett and Sheila King who powered home 34-5.

Jolly Farmers put out a strong team against Stumpers to earn themselves some points. But it was to no avail. Stumpers’ skips Ken Bycroft and Bernard Skelton romped home 30-9 and 27-8 respectively.

Kirton Town were up against a depleted Invaders team and won well on both rinks.

Freelanders bounced back after last week’s defeat against IBC when they picked up all the points from Crusaders. Bryan Sharp, Geoff Taylor and Stan Lawrence were 9-4 down after nine ends but finished up by winning 22-12. Ron Thacker, Derek Whelbourn and Vic Murtough were 18-3 up at 11 ends before winning 27-11 against the rink skipped by John Swain who has been in good nick of later.

T and B Containers Division Two

The top two both failed to pick up maximum points. Breakaways were first up when matched against Shunters. Janet Whyers, John Marshall and Alan Saxton won with comparative ease. Josie Dowse, Carol Dowse and Lorraine Stevens found it tough going as they were 9-3 down at six ends and 16-10 at 15 end. They closed the gap to 17-16 with one end remaining but found themselves on a losing 19-16 scorecard against Shunters Mathew Smith, Rod West and Norman Wright.

Royal Mail, in top spot and with a two-point advantage, played Golfers. They looked like they were going to get maximum points at the half-way stage as they were ahead on both rinks. Joan Sharp, Barry Harrington and Keith Sharp, 13-11 at 13 ends, scored on all the remaining ends to win 26-11. Ken Sharman, Ted Bloodworth and Barry Barton were in front by a 12-8 margin at 10 ends but then collapsed and could only score two more en route to falling to Jerry Gill, David Locking and Norman Ablard by a 26-14 scoreline.

This coming week will see the Mail playing the bottom team while Breakaways have a tough game against the Butchers. Four points will be enough for the Mail to lift the title as they have a much higher shot difference.

Norprint have had a disappointing campaign by their usual high standards, hovering near the relegation zone throughout the season. But when matched against the bottom team and playing their last game of the season they secured six points and a move out of the drop zone. Pam Vinter, Chris Avison and Tony Hall won 18-14 and Barbara Kenny, Margaret Broughton and Ralph Pick won 28-10.

Strollers just had the edge over Stickney. The rink points were shared but with Strollers’ Dave France, Mick Hippisley and Keith Swain enjoying a final 23-9 victory, it secured the aggregate points when eclipsing the 19-14 win of rival trio Steve Shaw, Len Fox and Brian Hooker.

Woodhall needed the top two end up without any points to their names to have any chance of taking the title. Doreen Sharp, Alan Eastgate and Eric Ulyatt were struggling to win their points in the early stages but came from behind and finished strongly to win 24-19. John Riches, Ruby Salmon and Tom Richardson were 7-6 up at seven ends before going on to win30-11. But it all means there’s another season in Division Two looming for Woodhall.

The Patriarchs versus Amateurs match saw two high scoring games. Ray Woods skipped his players to a 35-8 win, but replying for Amateurs Jonathan West led with great consistency along with Albert Batchelor skip Phil Sharp had an easy night winning 45-2.

Benton’s Glazing Division Three

With the division already decided and the top two on a bye week, it was a matter of the rest trying to finish as high as possible. Third-placed Wranglers consolidated their position with a good result against hard to beat Traders. Russ Rousell and Malc Nichols won 27-15 and 18-10.

Fourth-placed Abrasives surprisingly dropped two points to the bottom team Terriers. Ray Wagstaff skipped his rink to a 24-13 success. Replying for the Terriers, Alf Twiddy, Glenda Middleton and Tony Townsend eased home 20-15.

Shipmates picked up their sixth win of the season when they beat the Burtons. Betty Taylor, John Balderson and Brian Hunn won 23-14 and John Burton, Brian Lund and Rowland Chapman secured a 19-15 success.

Central looked in the driving seat to win four points from Punchbowlers, but they only finish with one. David Clark, Hazel Clark and Frank Bembridge, 22-13 up, saw their advantage disappear as Bull Young, Dave Peacock and Jeff Skelton rallied and pick up 12 shots to one in reply to secure a win of 25-23. For the Bowlers, Les Kelly, Terry Dawson and Barry Julian tied 13-13 against Iris Facey, Marion and Fred Epton.

BBC put on the style this week when outplaying highly-placed Vikings. Sue Upsall, Margaret Kirk and Ted Vere won 22-17 and David May, Mike Campion and Mu Watson, leading 29-3 at 16 ends, ran out winners 32-9.

The Crowns versus the Fairways saw the rink points shared. Crowns picked up the aggregate points from their captain Peter Copeland winning 31-4. Fairways Mavis Ablard, Barbara Slade and Carol Nundy won 20-15.

Week ending March 23:

Matt makes impact in EBF finals

Boston has a new top young “gun” out on the bowling green. With red bowls in hand, Matt Whyers found himself involved in three prestigious EBF finals at Horncastle. And he claimed two of the three crowns at stake. First up was success in the under-25s singles. Then he teamed up with a female partner to clinch the mixed pairs title. And his treble bid was thwarted by just one shot when he narrowly lost out as part of a triples team. Matt will now being going to Newark at the end of April to represent Boston and Lincolnshire in the national championships.

Stonehaven Care Home Division One

The pick of the games this week saw leaders Eastenders take on last year’s champions Cosmos. Michael Emery, Sue Simpson-Shaw and Les Feary picked up a first end count of four against the Enders’ trio of Andrew Limb, Ian Clarke and Paul Flatters. Seven ends later they found themselves 18-4 behind before the final scoreline read 28-14 to the Enders. Cossies did get some joy as Royce Reynolds, Keith French and Abb French were never behind against Matt Whyers, Tony Powell and Andrew Reeson to claim two points for a rink win of 22-17.

Kirton town’s top rink of Jeff Homewood, Jill Smith and Dorothy Hawkesworth put up a good fight against Adrian Field, Peter Gorbutt and Mick Tomlin for Holland Fen. They came from 13-2 down to take a 15-13 lead. The Fenmen then made positional changes and Peter Gorbutt showed off his skipping skills as he pulled the Fenmen through to a 20-18 win. Andrew grant, Hazel Marhsall and Martin Tomlin trailed 8-4 at seven ends but then gave the opposition just one more scoring end as they romped to a 26-9 success. Six points for the Fenmen puts them on top by rink points difference. Next week favourites for the title, Eastenders play IBC while Holland Fen have a bye week. The question is: can IBC throw a spanner in the works?

In fourth spot, Carlton Road played bottom team Swineshead. And the Road drove away with maximum points. Skips Geoff Parker and John Rylott rolled out successful scorecards of 20-18 and 25-12 respectively.

The division’s surprise result saw IBC managing to win all the points from Freelanders. Alan Bates, Dennis Ellis and Ted Bourne looked in total control when leading 19-5. But they finished up with a much closer victory margin of 23-18. Ruth Wright, Richard white and Reg Doughty won a close game 15-14.

Invaders, unfortunately, were short of manpower and fell on both rinks to A40 by margins of 38-9 and 28-11.

Jolly Farmers, desperately trying to stay in the division also fell on both rinks against Crusaders. Skips Joe Moore and David Allen went down 16-14 and 20-19 to Crusaders rinks led by John Swain and Chris Clarke respectively. With only one more game left for the bottom two and the Farmers having a five-point advantage plus a game against Stumpers, a two-point return will be okay for them. Meanwhile, Swineshead face a tough match against IBC and as such, it’s looking highly likely that they will be suffering the dreaded drop.

T and B Containers Division Two

The top four in Division Two were matched against each other and the action programme produced some exciting play. Leaders by just two points, Breakaways were up against third-placed the Gang whose set of Pete Vines, Mary and Keith Hewinson came out on top 29-9. This won four points for the team. In reply for the Breakaways, Janet and John Whyers with John Stevens, trailed 14-4 before recovering well to retrieve two points via a 21-18 scorecard.

This result saw Breakaways slip into second, as earlier Royal Mail — up against Woodhall — won a very close encounter. Joan Sharp, Barry Harrington and Keith Sharp won 19-18 against John Riches, Alan Eastgate and Eric Ulyatt. On the other rink, Ted Bloodworth, Barry Barton and Keith Thorlby, trailed 16-17 before picking up a last end count of two to win 18-17 to help take all the points to the Mail, who are now looking set to lift the title.

Strollers found Feathers in good form as they lost the aggregate points to them by 12 shots overall. For Strollers, Ray Hobart, Ken Haigh and Alan Everitt snatched a 14-13 victory. Replying for Feathers, Dick Masters, Tony Dawson and Keith Posey were 14-6 up at the half-way stage before going on to win 25.12.

Butchers closed the gap on their nearest rivals Amateurs when they won five of the six points at stake. Eileen May, George Eastgate and John Sellars won 24-15 and Ron and Sylvia Bagshaw with Geoff Dawson, tied 19-19.

Stickney saw off the challenge of Shunters by winning all the points by a five-shot aggregate margin. Len Fox, Angela Saxton and Ron Flowers won 15-12 and Steve Todd, Ray Bavin and Brian Hooker, who were 18-10 up at one stage, hung on to win 18-16.

Golfers versus Norprint saw the latter leave the rink pointless. For the Golfers, Jerry Gill, David Smith and Norman Ablard won 20-14 and Ron Hulley, Roy Woodthorpe and David Locking had a close 14-12 success.

Benton’s Glazing Division Three

Whenever Highflyers have dropped points over the last four weeks closest rivals Parthians have failed to capitalise. Highflyers have led the table since December 15 and have been the most consistent team over the past two seasons. They are now confirmed as worthy champions.

Facing tough opponents Punchbowlers they pick up four points. For the Bowlers, Bill Young, Dave Peacock and Jeff Skelton coasted to victory in their game. They led by a 17-3 margin against the champions-elect and nearly let it slip before hanging on to win 18-14. The leaders’ set of Joy Troy, Robert Goodale and Alan Watson won 27-8.

Parthians, having watched the Flyers pick up four points, knew their chances for the season were over. Opponents Shipmates in the bottom berth held them up. For Shipmates, Mary Cowham, Ken Hamblin and Keith Nix won 23-6 but Diane Bedford, Pauline Atkin and Mick Atkin, 12-4 up against Stan Smalley, Brian Samson and Tony Tomblin, took the foot off the pedal and fell 17-16.

On paper, Wranglers have possibly the best set of players, some with first division experience, but they have been disappointing this season. Matched against Vikings they also could only pick up four points. Maurice Young, Tony Drury and Stuart Green won 28-10. Jill Rousell, Russ Rousell and Malc Nichols started well but did not last the pace and fell 22-17 to Vikings' Jenny Holmes, Dough Staples and Ron Holmes.

Fairways picked up a good win against their higher opponents Traders. For Traders Gordon Neal, Cyn Baker and Sid Coultan won 20-12 and replying for Fairways Chris Gill, Lorna Locking and Heather Scarboro picked up four counts of three plus a four on the way to a victory of 22-9.

Central and Burtons shared the rink points and the aggregate points. For Central, David Clark, Hazel Clark and Frank Bembridge won 23-12. Replying for the Burtons, Mary Middlebrook, Chris Hill and Chas Newham were successful 25-14.

BBC’s set of David May, Mike Campion and Mu Watson were disappointed not to win the aggregate points when they produced a winning scorecard of 31-12. But Abrasives Ray Wagstaff, Peter Parker and Dave Bridges replied 30-10 to snatch those points by one shot.

Week ending March 16:

Stonehaven Care Home Division One

Normal service was restored this week as Eastenders got their act together and won all the points available. They now sit two points ahead of second placed Holland Fen with the additional bonus of also having a game in hand. And as such, they look near certainties to claim the championship crown for the first time. Matched against lowly Swineshead, the rink of Matt Whyers, Tony Powell and Simon Reeson set the pace right from the off and won with plenty to spare (23-15). Andrew limb, Ian Clarke and Paul Flatters dropped a count of two on the first end but then levelled on the second and from then on it was shots won at ease, the final scoreline being 25-12.

Holland Fen, meanwhile, were matched against another team in the lower half in the guise of Crusaders. The title chasers didn’t start too well and it wasn’t until they dropped 11 shots that they acknowledged the awakening call. From there, the Fenmen conceded just seven more shots while scoring an amazing 42 in reply. Andrew Grant, Keith Tomlinson and Peter Gorbutt won 27-11 while Bazza Wilson, Hazel Marshall and Mick Tomlin won 28-16.

Possibly the happiest captain of the evening was the one leading Jolly Farmers. Desperately in need of points, they managed to grab all six from the Invaders. Shirley Moore, Dick Allen and Joe Moore went 19-16 up and then hung on for a slender one-shot victory. Daryl Gardner, Alan Bairstow and David Allen, meanwhile, won more comfortably (24-18).

IBC and Kirton Town shared the rink points while the latter claimed the extras for the overall aggregate success. For IBC, Alan Bates, Richard white and Ted Bourne won 23-12. But it wasn’t enough for the extra points as Ann Kemp, Jill Smith and Peter Tracey replied with a 29-12 triumph.

Rustics and Stumpers had a really good battle for the aggregate points, Rustics in the end just claiming them by a slender one-shot margin. For Stumpers, Margaret Bycroft, Norma Barnes and Ken Bycroft won 20-15. Replying for Rustics, Don Ebbage, Stuart Van Beirendonck and Jim Gott won 22-16.

Carlton Road could not hold Cosmos with the latter claiming the majority of the spoils available. The rink of George Phillips, Colin Palmer and Keith French were too hot to handle in a 23-8 success. Royce Reynolds, Sue Simpson-Shaw and Abb French trailed 17-14 but then shared the rink spoils by virtue of a last end count of three against Jeff Powell, John Rylott and Geoff Parker.

T and B Containers Division Two

The division is extremely close with four teams at the top, all with a chance of promotion and with five points separating the lot. Woodhall, in fourth spot were matched against leaders Breakaways and won the lion’s share of the points at stake. Taking the four points were Richard Whitaker, John Riches and Tom Richardson, 22-10. Replying were Janet Whyers, Gloria French and John Stevens 20-16.

Playing at the same time, the Gang surprisingly let two points drift away to the Golfers. Rita Epton, John Allen and Ivan Dilley struggled throughout their match and slipped 18-14 to Bill Smith, Mick Nundy and Norman Ablard. Winning by a massive margin for the Gang were Pete Vines, Mary Hewinson and Keith Hewinson with a rink scoreline of 35-5.

Norprint beat Shunters. For the latter, Mathew Smith, Rod West and Norman Wright won 18-16 and for Printers Malc Cook, Margaret Broughton and Ralph Pick won 19-13.

Patriarchs need as many six-point returns as they can get in their quest to stave off the threat of relegation. Matched against Robins they won on both rinks. Skips Michael Dobb and Shamus Rooney won 26-9 and 21-16 respectively.

Strollers and Amateurs shared the rink points with the former picking up the extra two points for securing the overall aggregate. Amateurs’ Anthony Tabor, Sam Leafe and Eric Taylor won 17-12 against Bob Pearce, Berwyn Thomas and Alex Seaton. For Strollers, Dave France, Mick Hippisley and Keith Swain succeeded by a margin of 25-13.

Feathers versus Butchers saw the former win close games on both rinks. Keith Posey, Tony Dawson and Sheila Dawson edged home 17-16 and Maureen Hunn, Richard Sharp and Derek Hunn won with a scoreline of 22-17.

Benton’s Glazing Division Three

The top two both dropped points. Parthians saw two go astray to BBC. For the latter, Sue Upsall, Rene Howes and Ted Vere grabbed a last end count of one to defeat Mary Cowham, Ken Hmablin and Keith Nix 20-19. Pete Bedford, Malc Rogers and Mick Atkin made sure of the extra points with a win of 21-12.

Leaders Highflyers watched Parthians finish before starting their game with Traders. The Flyers set of Bas Atkin, Ivor Roberts and Barrie Trigg were 12-3 up at the half-way stage before going on to win 23-14. Joy Tory, Robert Goodale and Alan Watson fell over the last two ends played by a 15-12 margin to Traders’ Maurice Harding, Ray Robinson and Pete Coulson.

Third-placed Wranglers played bottom team Shipmates. Betty Taylor, John Balderson and Brian Hunn led 9-0 at six ends and 18-13 at 18 ends before defeating Jill Rousell, Maurice Young and Malc Nichols 19-15. Brian Simpson, Tony Drury and Russ Rousell won 35-7.

Crowns versus Terriers saw the latter pick up two points on the last end played. Fran King, Peter King and Rosemary Hoskins trailed 15-13 and picked up a last end count of three to win 16-15. John Adcock, Sandra Copeland and Peter Copeland for the Crowns won 22-11.

The Burtons and Abrasives shared the rink points and also the aggregate points. For the Burtons Olive and Jim Fenner with Mick Greet put in another winning display of 26-18. Replying for Abrasives Phil Stupley, Peter Park and Ray Wagstaff secured a 23-15 result.

Punchbowlers’ set of Michelle White, Charlie Reeson and Jeff Skelton against Fairways won 27-12 winning the aggregate by one shot as Mavis Ablard, Hazel Smith and Carol Nundy fell agonisingly short with a 26-12 reply.

Week ending March 9:

Stonehaven Care Home Division One

The top three all claimed maximum points this week. Holland Fen and Cosmos were matched against sides in the bottom three and had fairly comfortable victories. For the Cossies, Keith French and Abb French skipped their respective partners to rink wins of 17-12 and 22-13. Holland Fen, meanwhile, might have feared some degree of damage being inflicted by lowly Swineshead at the half-way stage of their clash. But the Fenmen pushed on in the second part of the match and skips Hazel Marshall and Mick Tomlin secured wins of 25-14 and 25-18 respectively.

Elsewhere, the leaders Eastenders had, on paper at least, the toughest of the three games scheduled. But they came through with flying colours with a full points haul against Freelanders. Andrew Limb, Ian Clark and Paul Flatters claimed a 22-12 success while a 29-9 win went to the bowls of Matt Whyers, Tony Powell and Simon Reeson.

Meanwhile, has the bubble burst for the Stumpers’ top rink? Margaret Bycroft, Norma Barnes and ken Bycroft found scoring shots hard to come by as the Invaders’ rink of Dale Elsam, Michael Penfold and Paul Gurton demolished them with a 24-11 scoreline. Stumpers’ other set of Sheila Gall, Denis Robins and Gerry Myers put up a better fight but still fell as Scott Whyers, Sandra Tebbs and Ian Tebbs secured the rest of the points for the Invaders.

A40 surprisingly dropped points to Rustics. Gill Grant, Sheila King and Arnold Bennett fell to Don Ebbage, Stuart Van Beirendonck and John Craft 22-20. This was a tight game where John Croft did most of the damage for Rustics on the final end to help his team to net two points. Meanwhile, Sarah McKay, Maggie Kisby and Mick Asplen eventually secured a 16-13 win to edge out Audrey Sivill (who played really well), Keith Woods and John Sivill.

Carlton Road versus IBC saw the rink points shared. For IBC, June Burman, Ruth Wright and Reg Doughty secured two points for their side with a 21-16 win Replying for the Road was the trio of John Benton, Phil Harris and Roy Vinter who must have got carried away with their success (forgot to fill in the scorecard) but appeared to win 26-12.

T and B Containers Division Two

Freelanders and Rustics shared the rink points, Rustics snatching two points from the bowls of Ray Reeson, Keith Woods and Jim Gott who got home 16-15. Bryan Sharp, Geoff Taylor and Stan Lawrence picked up four for the Landers with a win of 21-18.

Royal Mail were not scheduled to play until late on Thursday evening, so Breakaways eased into the top position. Matched against Amateurs’ John Whyers, John Marshall and Alan Saxton, they were 11-9 up at 13 ends and then went into overdrive, scoring on all the remaining ends to win 25-9. Meanwhile, Carol Dowse, Eileen Brown and Lorraine Stevens recovered a deficit of 21-14 to win 22-21.

The Gang did Royal Mail a real favour as they fell on both rinks to Stickney. David Tebbs, Ivan Dilley and Denis Tebbs showed some resistance, trailing 13-14 at 14 ends, but Steve Shaw, Frank Smith and Brian Hooker eased a way and won 20-15. Pete Vines, Mary and Keith Hewinson were really not in contention as Len Fox, Angela Saxton and Ron Flower, leading 10-0 at six ends, maintained their superiority to win 21-9.

Woodhall may be in fourth spot but they are going to have a major say in who wins the title in the last four weeks of the season, and it is not out of reach for them. Matched against Robins they secured all the points. Richard Whitaker, John Riches and Tom Richardson won 22-17 and Doreen Sharp, Alan Eastgate and Eric Ulyatt were successful 26-10.

Golfers made sure they would not be embroiled in a relegation battle winning maximum points at the expense of Feathers. Jerry Gill, David Smith and Norman Ablard won 22-14 and Bill Smith, Mick Nundy and Graham Scarboro won 17-14.

Strollers were matched against Shunters. Ray Hobart, Ken Haigh and Alex Seaton, for Strollers, snatched a 15-14 victory. Shunters’ Derek Butwright, Abb Houlden and Alan Mason replied 18-10 for four points.

If three teams are relegated Norprint look in trouble. Matched against Butcher they fell on both rinks. For Butchers, Eileen May, George Eastgate and Geoff Dawson won 22-17 and Tina Reeson, Roy Bennett and Dave Gill were successful 24-15.

Royal Mail needed all six from second bottom Patriarchs, but the latter’s Sam White, Alan Woods and Shamus Rooney won 28-11. The aggregate went to the Mail thanks to a strong finish from Joan Sharp, Margaret Gardener and Keith Sharp who won 29-7.

Benton’s Glazing Division Three

Leaders Highflyers were fortunate to pick up all six points from BBC. They had to rely on a last end count of three from Linda Garner, Bas Atkin and Barrie Trigg to win 18-17 over Sue Upsall, Rene Howes and Ted Vere. Eric Lewis, Ivor Roberts and Alan Watson picked up the rest of the points with a win of 21-13. The Flyers have a tricky finish to the season, having to play Traders and Punchbowlers who they lost to earlier in the season and third-placed Wranglers who are in a good run of form.

Parthians in second spot were given a hard match by Central, but finally secured the points. Skips Pete Bedford and Mick Atkin won 16-11 and 16-14.

Wranglers gave Terriers a tough time. Brian Simpson, Fleur Simpson and Malc Nichols won 19-11 and Derek Green, Tony Drury and Maurice Young won with a mammoth score of 41-7.

Highflyers might think they have a chance for the title when they play Punchbowlers, a team they have never beaten, as they saw them drop all points to the Burtons. Mary Middlebrook, Chris Hill and Pete Dodes won 20-19 and Olive and Jim Fenner with Mick Greet won 25-13.

Fairways, as expected, won all the points from their encounter with Shipmates. Carol Nundy and Heather Scarboro were successful 20-16 and 19-13.

Abrasives came through a tough game against a solid Traders team winning the aggregate points by a comfortable margin. For Abrasives, Gill Russell, Maureen Brammer and Ray Wagstaff secured the four points with a win of 37-8. Replying for Traders skip Sid Coultan won 15-10.

The match between Vikings and the Crowns was close throughout with Vikings just winning the aggregate points. For the Crowns, Sandra Copeland, Phil Markham and Peter Copeland winning 17-8 could only win two more ends and were closed down with the final scoreline reading 19-18. Replying for the Vikings were Barbara Moor, Ray Moore and Gordon Gallichan won secured a 19-15 success.

Week ending March 2:

Stonehaven Care Home Division One

Eastenders, who are six points clear with a game in hand at the top, played fourth-placed A40 whose trio of Maggie Kisby, Arnold Bennett and Sheila King were 12-1 up at six ends against Matt Whyers, Tony Powell and Simon Reeson. But they soon found themselves 16-14 down at 16 ends. Dictating the length of jack was a problem, but they recovered to win 18-16. The same went for John McKay, Jean Cammack and Mick Asplen, who dropped two counts of five on their way to a defeat of 24-12 to the Enders' Andrew Limb, Andrew Reeson and Paul Flatters.

Title challengers Holland Fen played Invaders and enjoyed rink victories of 33-10 and 25-13.

Carlton Road maintained their position against Rustics. Phil Harris, Chris Gill and Roy Vinter won 21-9 and Jeff Powell, John Rylott and Geoff Parker had a score of 22-13.

The teams lying second and third from bottom enjoyed two good results. Crusaders secured the lion’s share of the points in their game with Stumpers. For Stumpers Margaret Bycroft, Norma Barnes and Ken Bycroft won 23-14, but it was not enough for the aggregate as Margaret Chester, Ken Rawlings and John Swain won 24-12.

Meanwhile, Swineshead had a tough task against Kirton Town. The Town’s top rink of Jeff Homewood, Jill Smith and Dorothy Hawkesworth had all kinds of problems with Janet Vinter, Brian Vinter and Fred Scrupps, needing to win the last end to secure a win of 17-15. The Town's Ann Thomas, Ann Kemp and Pauline Richardson dropped two counts of five on their way to a defeat of 25-16 to Pam Dawson, Joan Mews and Bob Thompson for four good points for Swineshead.

The bottom team did well to claim two points from Freelanders. Shirley Moore, Shirley Allen and Joe Moore (10-0 up at five ends against Tom Freeston, Des Aelberry and Vic Murtough) then found themselves 10-11 down at 13 ends, but managed to win 19-15. The Landers’ set of Bryan Sharp, Geoff Taylor and Stan Lawrence claimed the extra points with a scorecard of 20-11.

T and B Containers Division Two

The Gang fell back to second. When matched against Shunters they could only win four points. Nancy Mason, Ian Smith and Alan Mason for Shunters went into the lead on end seven and secured a win of 18-17. Meanwhile, Pete Vines, Mary Hewinson and Keith Hewinson for the Gang won 23-16.

Breakaways dropped two points to Feathers. Here, Carol Dowse, Eileen Brown and Lorraine Stevens dropped a last end count of three to lose 17-16 to Feathers’ Dick Masters, Keith Posey and Sheila Dawson. Janet and John Whyers and John Stevens for Breakaways secured a win of 29-12 for four points only.

The new leaders of the division are Royal Mail, who won all six from Norprint. Ken Sharman, Ted Bloodworth and Barry Barton won 26-8 and John Sharp, Barry Harrington and Keith Sharp won 20-14.

The Golfers up against the Robins had wins of 24-7 and 26-10 for skips Graham Scarboro and David Locking.

Strollers have not had many maximum hauls, but this week they managed one against Patriarchs. Bob Pearce, Berwyn Thomas and Alex Seaton won 23-14 and Ray Hobart, Ken Haigh and Alan Everitt won 29-14.

The Butchers had a good result against Stickney. The latter’s trio of Len Fox, Bill Barton and Brian Hooker won 23-17. Replying for the Butchers and claiming four points, Eileen May, George Eastgate and John Sellars won 30-11.

Benton’s Glazing Division Three

The top two had comfortable wins. Leaders Highflyers against bottom of the league Shipmates, came off the green with wins of 27-9 and 28-4 for skips Barrie Trigg and Alan Watson.

Parthians, in second, playing mid-table Burtons also won comfortably, skips Keith Nix and Pete Bedford winning 27-3 and 25-12.
