Week ending February 23: Stonehaven Care Home Division One The top three all claimed maximum points this week. Holland
Fen and Cosmos were matched against teams in the bottom three and duly had
fairly comfortable wins. For the Cossies, Keith French and Abb French had rink
wins of 17-12 and 22-13. Holland Fen, at the midway stage, might have been
worried as opponents Swineshead looked like inflicting some degree of damage.
But they pushed on in the second part of the match and Hazel Marshall and Mick
Tomlin secured wins of 25-14 and 25-18 to make sure of maximum match points. Margaret Bycroft, Norma Barnes and Ken Bycroft for the
Stumpers found scoring shots hard as Invaders Dale Elsam, Michael Penfold and
Paul Gurton demolished them 24-11. The Stumpers other set of Sheila Gall,
Denis Robins and Gerry Myers put up a better fight, but still fell to Scott
Whyers, Sandra Tebbs and Ian Tebbs. With Breakaways on a bye week the division has new
leaders. The Gang thus went to the top the table, but only by one point. That
single point should realistically have been three as they were matched
against third-from bottom-Feathers. For The Gang, David Tebbs, Rita Epton and
Dennis Tebbs made their superior league position show when leading 11-1.
Feathers’ Maureen Hunn, Richard Sharp and Derek Hunn had a brief flurry of
activity to drag themselves back into the game, but the Gang’s trio finished
strongly to win 26-12. Meanwhile, Harry Dodd, John Allen and Ivan Dilley were
never in contention and Beryl Brewster, Tony and Sheila Dawson snatched two
points for Feathers with a rink win of 20-15. Highflyers had a lead of four points before their game
against second-placed Parthians. And the leaders showed off their talents
winning five of the six points at stake. Joy Tory, Robert Goodale and Alan
Watson won 25-16. Eric Lewis, Ivor Roberts and Peter Hoyles, trailing 14-9 to
Keith Nix, tied their game 14-14. In the father-and-son competition at the National Championships in Northampton, Martin and Mick Tomlin fell disappointingly at the quarter-final hurdle. And Bex Field in the singles at Lodden Vale Basingstoke fell in the first round. |

Week ending February 16: Stonehaven Care Home Division One Leaders Eastenders were on a bye week, but were pleased
to see rivals Holland Fen and Cosmos drop points. Cosmos, matched against
lowly Crusaders would be disappointed to drop two points. For the Cossies, George
Phillips, Colin Palmer and Keith French were 18-6 up at 14 ends but, allowed
their opposition to bite back and only had a four-shot advantage at 18 ends
when they led 19-15. However, they eased away again to win 23-15. Meanwhile,
Michael Emery, Sue Simpson Shaw and Les Feary, with a lead of six shots at
seven ends, let their opponents score 14 shots without reply to fall behind
17-9. They closed the margin down to 17-16, but Carol Cliffe, Margaret
Chester and Chris Clarke put some more shots on the scorecard to win 22-17. Freelanders, trailing Carlton Road in the table by four
points, lifted themselves above them when they won all the points. Bryan
Sharp, Geoff Taylor and Stan Lawrence won 18-16. Ron Thacker, Vic Murtough
and Jeff Nicholson had a 22-13 success. The game of the evening was the exciting finish that
Woodhall against the Gang produced. Overall the scores were level with one
end remaining, 18-18 and 17-17. The Gang, in the second half, recovered well.
David Tebbs, Rita Epton and Denis Tebbs picked up a last count of one to win
19-18 and Pete Vines, Ian Dilley and Mary Hewinson finished with a count of
two to win 19-17. The win saw the Gang move to second spot. Benton’s Glazing Division Three

Week ending February 9: National Championships Northampton Indoor Bowls Club will, over the weekend of
February16, 17 and 18 be holding the final stages of the national
father-and-son championships. Qualifying from Boston are Martin and Mick
Tomlin who start their quest for glory this Friday evening. The Tomlins have
already won this title once before and will be aiming for a repeat success. The following weekend will see the start of the ladies’
national championships at Basingstoke. Representing Boston will be Bex Field
in the singles while the same player will join forces with Jean Cammack, Di
Wilson and Sarah McKay in the fours. Stonehaven Care Home Division One This week’s fixtures saw the top two going
head to head. Second placed team Holland Fen put out their best six players,
but it still wasn’t enough to topple Eastenders who looked more comfortable
on the green and came out on top by a points score of 4-2. Andrew limb, Ian
Clarke and Paul Flatters looked like they were going to be demolished by
Martin Tomlin’s rink for the Fenmen. But despite trailing 15-5, the Enders’
trio battled back to lose by the more slender margin of 19-14. And this
proved vital as the Enders’ other set of Matt Whyers, Tony Powell and Andrew
Reeson (10-7 ahead at seven ends) raced away to win 25-12 against Mick
Tomlin’s set. Cosmos, in third place, showed some
much-improved form when they secured all six points at the expense of
Stumpers. Skips Abb French and Les Feary won 24-14 and 30-16 respectively. Of the bottom three, only Crusaders managed to
gain any reward. And this was only one point. It came in the match against
A40. Chris Clarke, Carol Cliff and Margaret Chester went down 16-11 to Mick
Asplen’s rink. Then Jenny Hill, Ken Rawlings and John Swain tied 21-21
against Sheila King’s rink. Freelanders made hard work of beating
Swineshead, picking up the vital shots only in the later stages to enable
skips Stan Lawrence and Jeff Nicholson to win 17-12 and 20-16 respectively. At 11 ends played overall Kirton Town looked
like they were going to lose the aggregate points in their game with Rustics.
Ann Kemp, Jill Smith and Dorothy Hawkesworth were level at 10-10 while Ann
Thomas, Sheila Tracey and Pauline Richardson were trailing 14-8. The former
then picked up the tempo and ran out 28-14 winners which took the extra
points as the latter trio managed to pull back to a slender 18-17 loss
against Don Ebbage, Stuart Van Bierendonk and Jim Gott. IBC managed to take four points from their
game against Invaders and possibly threw away the other two with some
inaccurate firing. June Burman, Ruth Wright and Reg Doughty won with plenty
to spare against IBC’s rink led by Paul Gurton. But Alan Bates, Tony Burman
and Ted Bourne (20-16 up) lost out as Scott Whyers, Sandra Tebbs and Ian
Tebbs “got out of jail” with late counts of two and five to win 23-20. T
and B Containers Division Two
Woodhall in second place also had problems
with one of their players apparently misreading the fixture list. With no
reserve on standby, this left John Riches and Tom Richardson to battle
against the odds. And the kept the final score to respectable margins of
20-14 to Shunters’ Nancy Mason, Abb Houlden and Alan Mason. Picking up the
aggregate points for Woodhall with a 30-17 win were Doreen Sharp, Alan
Eastgate and Eric Ulyatt. The Gang were matched against the Butchers
and had comfortable leads across both rinks at the half-way stage. And things
went from strength to strength. David Tebbs, Keith Hewinson and Denis Tebbs
won by a massive 39-5 margin while Harry Dodd, John Allen and Ivan Dilley cosily
won 21-15. Royal Mail, matched against the Feathers
also won with plenty to spare. Joan Sharp, Keith Thorlby and Keith Sharp won
25-16 while Ken Sharman, Ted Bloodowrth and Barry Barton succeeded 26-12. Stickney versus Golfers saw all the points
gpo to the former. Skips Ron Flower and Brian Hooker guided their rinks to
respective successes of 24-14 and 20-17. On paper, Amateurs matched against
basement-dwelling Robins should have seen all the points going to the higher
placed side. But it wasn’t the case. For Amateurs Anthony Tabor, Sam Leafe
and Eric Taylor won 33-9. But that only just eclipsed a telling reply of 30-7
by the Robins set of Janet Pape, Eileen Sellars and Arthur Hanson. Benton’s Glazing Division Three Second placed Parthians seemed to have all
the points in the bag after 16 ends of their clash with the Traders. But when
the latter turned up the fightback heat, Parthians were left with only one
point. For Traders, Gordon Wells, Gordon Neal and Sid Coultan trailed 20-14
against Keith Nix’s rink but then picked up 10 shots without reply to win
24-20. Maurice Harding, Cyn Bake and Norman Stanley were 22-15 down but then picked
up seven shots without reply to draw 22-22 and effectively turn the match on
its head. Wranglers secured all six points against the
Burtons with rink wins of 19-15 and 33-6 for skips Stuart Green and Malc
nicholls respectively. Central had too much clout for BBC who are
really struggling this term. David Clark, Hazel Clark and Frank Bembridge won
22-10 while Iris Facey, Marion Epton and Fred Epton also secured a winning
scorecard — this by a margin of 24-10. Elsewhere, the Crowns surprisingly lost to
bottom side Swineshead. With 18 ends played overall, the game was tied. For
the Crowns, George Rennison, Sandra Copeland and Peter Copeland were winning
21-11 but drop a pair of two counts that closed the margin to 21-15. John Burton,
Brian Lund and Tony Tomblin for Shipmates were leading 18-8 and picked up two
counts of two to win 22-8 and secure the aggregate spoils. Terriers had no answer to the Fairways’
green play as skips Carol Nundy and Heather Scarboro produced winning scorecards
of 23-14 and 20-11 respectively. |

Week ending February 2: Stonehaven Care Home Division One Holland Fen have led the table from week one
and through a phenomenal further 19 weeks since then. But this week, with the
Fenmen on a bye week, Eastenders went top by virtue of claiming maximum
points in the match against Rustics. Andrew Limb, Ian Clark and Paul Flatters
enjoyed a 20-10 win while Matt Whyers, Tony Powell and Simon Reeson won 35-8
to land six valuable match points.. Cosmos look like they can say goodbye to
retaining the league title. Matched against bottom team Swineshead, they lost
the aggregate points by one shot. George Phillips, Colin Palmer and Keith
French were always in front and won 21-19. Meanwhile, Michael Emery, Royce
Reynolds and Les Feary were put on the back burners when being beaten 21-18
by Jean Thompson, Pam Dawson and Bob Thompson. T and B Containers Division Two
