Marriott Motors Handicap KO Tournament

Holland Fen are this year’s conquering heroes in the Marriott Motors Handicap KO Tournament. They secured the title by virtue of success over the Amateurs in the final contested at Boston Indoor Bowls Club.

But to achieve overall success, they had to battle through two tough concluding rounds of the competition. Their first mission (with a scratch handicap) was in the quarter-finals when, as the only First Division side left in the contest, They were matched against Wrangle (+28). The First Division outfit with six ends played were trailing 35-13. At 12 ends the deficit was just two shots. And with the clock ticking, Bazza Wilson, Andrew Grant and Keith Tointon put in a good finish which saw the Fenmen home 41-39.

Elsewhere in the last eight stage, Crowns (+10) from the Third Division were matched against Amateurs (0) from Division Two. It saw the latter in good form. Jonathan West, Albert Batchelor and Phil Sharp won 20-16 and Anthony Tabor, Sam Leafe and Eric Taylor with a success of 19-6.

Fairways (+17) also of Division Three were playing Gang (0) from Division Two. The game was closely matched throughout with the Fairways in a 'nail biting' finish winning through on the last end played 36-35. The Fairways set of Lorna Locking, Barbara Slade and Heather Scarboro did a good job in holding Rita Epton, Peter Vines and Ivan Dilley to a tie of 11-11.

The other quarter-final saw two teams from the Third Division against each other — Shipmates (+4) against Abrasives (0). The Shipmates had the slight advantage from the off, going through 29-23.

The semi-final saw Amateurs (0) versus Fairways (+20) and Holland Fen (0) against Shipmates (+32).

The Fairways were in the driving seat with just one end remaining in their game against Amateurs. Leading 35-31, everything went pear shaped as they dropped six shots to lose overall 37-35. Holland Fen were made to work hard by Shipmates but the shot advantage was slowly wound down and the Fenmen won with a bit to spare 52-44, a good performance from the top league side.

The final saw Amateurs (+22) fall overall 47-40. Jonathan West, Albert Batchelor and Phil Sharp doing really well against the Fenmens Bazza Wilson, Andrew Grant and Keith Tointon as they trailed by just one shot at seven ends played. The Fenmen then started to pick up shots at will and ran out winners 24-9. Anthony Tabor, Sam League and Eric Taylor, with the help of the handicap, matched Andy Dawson, Adrian Field and Hazel Marshall. But the latter won overall 31-23. The latter were thankful to pick up nine shots without reply over the last five ends played to ease the team through to be 2006 Marriott Motors KO champions.

Stonehaven Care Home Easter Tournament

The Stonehaven Care Home Easter Tournament saw an exciting finish to the day’s play. From Horncastle, John Barker, Richard Whitaker, Ralph Clayton and Ted Tasker set the target to beat off 43 points (plus 34 shots). They were the outstanding winners of the top half of the draw. Playing in the second session, Marie Penfield,
Margaret Bycroft, Mike Penfold (sub Dave Allen) and Ken Bycroft knew what they had to do in their last game to be outright winners. Matches against Shirley Moore, Dick Allen, Shirley Allen and Joe Moore are always tough. They knew they had to win by at least six shots, they finished with an eight-shot margin to be 2006 Stonehaven Care Home champions.

Finishing in third spot were Mary Clark, Carol Dowse, Alan Clark and Mark Brown 39 points (+21) and in fourth spot were Audrey Sivill, Don Ebbage, Bruce Allen and John Sivill 33 points (+20). Thanks went to the sponsors from Stonehaven Care Home, Marie and Mike Penfold.

Under-25s Triples Tournament

Boston Indoor Bowling Club held its annual under-25s triples tournament. The event’s main sponsor was Boston Bowls Supplies, but there was some additional backing from Dales Sports Surfaces to help generate a prize fund this year of £300. This helped to attract 72 players from five counties.

The event saw the 24 teams split into six groups for a round robin phase, which produced eight qualifiers for the quarter-finals.

The bowling was of a high standard from the beginning and several experiences sets failed to get out of the group stages. These included Mark Chambers of South Forest, Arran Bee of Gedling and also going home early were Shane Garner’s Pentney rink.

The eight qualifiers then took part in a draw to decide the quarter-finals. Wayne Willgress of Norwich had the best record from the group stages with three big wins and he faced Andrew Dawson’s Boston rink. Andrew was playing with England’s Bex Field and surprisingly his brother Matthew who had retired a year ago. Matthew was forced into action as Andrew Wooding broke a foot on the day before the event. This was a superb match that went into the final end tied at 7-7. But it was the home rink who claimed two shots to move into the semis.

Facing them there were their old enemy from Scunthorpe, Kevin Rands, Paul Johnson and Simon Keay. The Scunny boys were last year’s winners. And with Jono playing his last under-25 match, they were determined to retain the title. In the quarter-finals they had cruised past the other Scunthorpe rink of Duffield, Burton and Wilkinson 17-4.

The semi was a hard fought match with Boston racing into a 10-2 lead. Scunthorpe rallied to close to 11-9, but Boston won the final two ends to win 13-9.

In the other half of the draw the Sutton St James set of Calvin Leuty, his sister Charlie and another England player, Hayley Robinson, defeated the Boston set of West, Tomlin and Leafe, 11-4.

Filling the fourth semi-final place were Shaun Stubb’s set of Melton who narrowly beat Andrew Lowe and Co from Newark, 8-6. The second semi-final followed the pattern of the first one, with Leuty forging into a 7-0 lead. However, Stubbs closed to be within one shot at 8-9. But Leuty took the last two ends to win 14-8.

The crowd witnessed an excellent final that saw Boston take an early 5-0 advantage. But Sutton St James recovered to 5-4. Boston then took control and went into the final end leading 10-4, which forced Leuty to attempt a full count of six to force a tie. With his final bowl Leuty drove Boston’s two nearest bowls off rink to leave a county of five. Boston therefore lifted the title with a 10-9 victory.

Mark Brown of Boston Bowls Supplies presented the prizes and the trophy to champions Andrew Dawson, Bex Field and Matthew Dawson — a well deserved home success for the Boston rink. Mark, who attends many bowls events with his business, was impressed at the high standard of play from the youngsters throughout the tournament. The organiser thanked all the entrants, some of whom had travelled a great distance to take part, for their superb standard of play and etiquette in making this an excellent event.

Week ending April 14:

Marriott Motors Handicap KO Tournament

Defending champions Fairways are still going strong. Matched against Strollers (and with the advantage of +23)  they won overall 45-28. To win through to the quarters, they overcame Shunters who had earlier beaten a lack-lustre Crusaders.

Wrangle (+32), fourth in the Third Division, were matched against A40 (0) who finished third in the top division. It saw the underdogs win with a bit to spare. Doing especially well for Wrangle were Brian Simpson, Fleur Simpson and Russ Rousell who did not need any help to defeat a disappointing A40 set of Gill Grant, Maggie Kisby and Sheila King 16-13. Wrangle (+7) continued their good form with a win against Vikings without the aid of the handicap and a booked place in the quarters.

Elsewhere, the Burtons’ run in the competition came to a halt when matched against Abrasives. Having negotiated a tie-break against Highflyers, they were comprehensively beaten by Abrasives (+5) which saw the latter win a place in the quarter-finals. Earlier, Abrasives (+28) were matched against Swineshead (0) and won through thanks to some good play from Richard Jutsam, Ivan Stimson and Charles Russell who held the Division One outfit of Becci Reeson, Brian Vinter and Fred Scrupps to a deficit of 13-10.

The Division One champions Cosmos (0) were given a hard (but not wholly impossible) mission to overcome Shipmates (+36). The game finished level with Shipmates going through on the tie-break rule. for Shipmates’ Brian Hunn, John Burton and Brian Lund did really well against the Cossies’ strong rink of Les Feary, Chris Hiom and Abb French. Shipmates (+25) then overcame Breakaways (0). The Division Two outfit were not playing to their usual high standard and fell by a wide margin.

The Eastenders (0) versus Holland Fen (0) encounter saw the Fenmen going through 28-24.

Next up for the Fenmen were Royal Mail (+16). This was a close game with the Mail have a one-shot advantage overall at 11 ends played. At 14 ends, the Fenmen had a one-shot advantage and they went on to win 35.31.

Central (+17) comfortably overcame Patriarchs (0), then played the Gang who had earlier defeated Stickney. With a +22 start, the Central team needed a few more as the Gang won overall 46-38. The Crowns (+14) won through against the Golfers (0) by 32-28. They then overran Woodhall, thanks to a good performance from George Rennison, Lee Mulholland and Peter Copeland.

Amateurs, using the same six players, put themselves into a quarter-final spot. Matched against Punchbowlers (+9), they eased through 37-28 and against Traders (+20) the scoreline was 39-34.

Quarter-finals draw is as follows: Crowns v Amateurs; Shipmates v Abrasives; Gang v Fairways; Wrangle v Holland Fen.

The Boston indoor ladies’ team defended the Trudy Bates Trophy they won last year. Up against Spalding on the Grantham carpet, three rinks were won and two went down in an overall success scoreline of 111-97.

Week ending April 7:

Benton’s Glazing Division Three

The champions-elect, the Robins, needed just one point to claim the title. Highflyers, in second spot, needed all six if the leaders failed in their quest. Matched against third placed Punchbowlers the leaders had a difficult game to negotiate. The Robins’ top rink of Janet Pape, Eileen Sellars and John Riches (whose losses this season can be counted on one hand) were in serious trouble right from the start. with six ends played they trailed 11-0. They managed to win only four of the 14 ends played and went down to the Bowlers Norman Truepenny, Richard Bell and Jeff Skelton 19-6.

The Robins’ other set of Neil Lockwood, Terry Hall and Arnold Pape were also given a testing time as Charlie Reeson (playing superbly), Terry Dawson and Peter Cannon led 14-3 at eight ends and went on to win 18-12.

At the same time the second team Highflyers were playing an in-form Abrasives. For the Flyers, Bas Atkin, Eric Lewis and Ivor Roberts did well enough winning 16-8. But the Flyers’ set of Peter Hoyles, Craig Spencer and Barrie Trigg fell to Abrasives’ Richard Jutsam, Maureen Brammer and George Bulman 16-6. This saw the Robins win the title by a four-point margin.

The Burtons, who have taken some scalps lately, surprisingly fell on both rinks to the Fairways. Skips Barbara Slade and Heather Scarboro 19-10 and 17-10. Wrangle have had a successful season finishing in equal fifth place. Playing against traders, Margaret Purkiss, Phil Purkiss and Russ Rousell won convincingly 14-6. Jill Rousell, Tony Drury and Maurice Young look the strongest of trios but they need to produce the results. Matched against Traders’ Barrie Hudson, Gordon Neal and Sid Coultan they could only tie 12-12.

The Crowns’ captain Peter Copeland tells me he has at last found the ‘jewels’ — his new woods! Matched against Terriers they were in sparkling form producing a win of 21-3 with the help of John Adcock and Sandra Copeland. George

Rennison, Lee Mulholland and Graham Mulholland did not do too bad, either, as they won also 16-10.

Fenhouses finished their last game in the night league with a good result against Central. Norma Davis, Ben Davis and Malc Nichols won 18-9 and Vera Monger, Frank Smith and Vic Chester with a successful 14-10.

Marriott Motors Handicap KO tournament

The first round of the Marriott Motors Handicap KO tournament saw some Division One teams go out at the first time of asking.

First to bite the dust were IBC. Matched against Fenhouses (+25) they were well short of making the shots up and the Houses went through 48-35. Freelanders (0) versus Gang (+15) saw the latter go through by a two-shot margin. Kirton Town (0), matched against Central (+30), saw the match go in favour of Central by three shots. Doing well for the Third Division One Opponents Ann Thomas, Sheila Tracey and Tony Kemp 10-9.

Punchbowlers (+30) versus Carlton Road (0) saw another Division One team exit the competition 44-36. Doing well for the Bowlers were Charlie Reeson, Terry Dawson and Peter Cannon who fought back form 4-11 down to finish losing 11-15 to the Road’s Phil Harris, John Benton and Alan Coupland.

Flying the flag for the First Division were Crusaders. Matched against Parthians (+15) they won by an 11-shot margin 41-30. Feathers (+5) fell to Strollers (0) by four shots. The champions of Division Three the Robinson (+8) fell to Amateurs (0) from Division Two by a wide margin. Terriers (+30) found Royal Mail far too strong and went out with comparative ease. Highflyers (+4) did not need the help of the handicap to defeat a disappointing BBC (0).

Traders (+24) saw off the challenge of Division One outfit Rustics (0) far too easily 44-22. Woodhall (0) versus Butchers (0) saw the former go through by just three shots 26-30. The closest game of them all was Stumpers (0) versus Norprint (+9) that finished 28-28, Norprint won through on tie-break.

Easter tournament: The club are pleased to have on board new sponsors for the Easter tournament and also Division One (2006-2007) season — Michael and Marie Penrose of Stonehaven Care Home, Quadring. It is hoped this will be a long and happy association with the club.
