Round-up for week ending September 2

This will be the final report of the season, although there are a few results still to come. Should anyone have any dispute with the tables, they must contact me, in writing, outlining the problem, which will then be investigated. I would like to thank the teams for their efforts in trying to complete fixtures in very trying conditions. I am also glad that the majority of members have conducted their business with consideration and goodwill, which are worth more that any rules. Talking of rules, members are reminder that items for consideration at the A.G.M. should be submitted to Richard white by 31st. October 2007.

In Two Wood Division One, the final game of the season saw relegation candidates West End B’ beat Kirton A 10-2 and 93-85. Although it brought them level on points with Wigtoft, their shot difference let them down and they are relegated.

Two Wood Division Two was the most competitive section in the league and has now finally resolved itself. Sibsey A, long shot promotion possibles, lost at home to Woodhall 1-11 and end up fifth whilet the visitors finish a creditable third. Wyberton completed their fixtures in this league on Thursday and Friday. The sheets are not yet to hand, but reported results are Wyberton 10, Sibsey A 2, and Wyberton 12, West End A 0. This means that Wyberton and West Skirbeck will be promoted, the relegation issue having been decided some time ago.

Jubilee Park finished their Two Wood Division Three season with a comprehensive 12-0 (138-40) win over bottom placed Kirton B. They finish runners-up, with both promoted teams being streets ahead of the pack. They also did well to tidy up their outstanding fixtures, having had a heavy backlog at one stage.

In Three Wood Division One, Norprint came up with the goods and beat Goodfellowship 10-2 to ensure their top section status for next year. Convincing wins from rinks skipped by Ralph Pick, Barry Barton and Richard Vinter ensured the aggregate 91-42. Wyberton played Burton House A and lost 2-10 Most rinks were close, the top score being 21-7 for Richard Whittaker, Pete Asplen and Ken Porter.

In Three Wood Division Two, the final match saw promoted Kirton A play relegated Wrangle and predictably won 10-2.

In Three Wood Division Three, last season’s promoted champions Mareham finished with a 12-0 win over Gosberton. A massive 38-4 win was recorded by N Cartwright, J Bontoft and J Kennedy and in total the shots worked out 100-49. There are some results to come in this section, but they do not affect promotion or relegation. I am sorry to hear that Gosberton are considering leaving the league. I am also sorry to hear that one factor is the unwillingness of some opposition teams to play against them on a Wednesday. A final league table will be posted to interested clubs if requested.

In Three Wood Division Four, Wyberton beat Kirton 10-2, in a game where only three rinks played. As neither promotion nor relegation was affected, Wyberton have simply been awarded two points for the rink where there was no opposition. Maybe we need a rule to cover the allocation of shots. West End C beat Kirton 8-4, the aggregate being only six different. The matches Wyberton v Donington and Wyberton v Woodhall B will not be played. No points will be allocated as neither promotion or relegation issues are affected.

Round-up for week ending August 26

A healthy number of re-arranged matches have been played this week, but there are still promotion and relegation issues to be resolved. This is particularly true at the top end of Two Wood Division Two which has been close all season. I hope that the key matches can be played. Please send in results promptly, and if you can, please ring them through so I could publish a final table next Saturday.

In Two Wood Division One, the final week 14 result in this section confirms Burton House beating Wigtoft 10-2. Maybe another holiday is needed! Notable here was a 39-14 win from Maurice Kemp, John Allen and Peter Horn. On Friday August 17 Burton House challenged Sleaford Road’s title hopes with a 12-0 win in a week 8 match. Three rinks were close and Ron Thacker, Richard Whittaker and Ken Porter won 30-12 to give a 114-80 score. On Monday August 20 they were in action again, away to Kirton in a week 9 game. The result was a 6-6 draw, both sides winning two rinks and the aggregate being drawn. This still left Burton House three points behind Sleaford Road who win the title with a match in hand. Sleaford Road finished their fixtures with a 12-0 win over Goodfellowship. West End B kept their survival hopes alive with an 8-4 win over BBC I. Janet Vinter, Louise Swain and Keith Swain scored a 47-14 match over a two-man opposition rink to ensure the aggregate that may prove important at the end of the season. BBC I were again in action against Wigtoft, whom they beat 11-1, leaving Wigtoft having finished their campaign two points short of safety.

Positions: Champions, Sleaford Road; runners-up, Burton House; relegated, Goodfellowship plus either Wigtoft 70/14 or West End B 60/13, Wigtoft having the better shot difference. Results outstanding: West End B v Kirton A.

In Two Wood Division Two, West Skirbeck got all the points against BBC II (week 10), notable being a 55-9 result from Derek Wright, Gordon Gallichan and Rob Day. They finish on 100 points, which doesn’t quite guarantee them promotion. Wyberton beat Swineshead 11-1 in a game of close results.

Positions: Champions, any two from West Skirbeck 100/14, West End A 91/13, Wyberton 91/12, Woodhall 85/13, Sibsey A 77/12; relegated, Boston Park, BBC II. Results outstanding: Sibsey A v Woodhall, Wyberton  v Sibsey A, Wyberton v West End A.

In Two Wood Division Three, a week 10 result from Burton House shows the B team, losing at home to Jubilee Park by 4-8. In spite of this they finish champions on 135 points. Woodhall Spa beat Norprint 11-1, most rinks being close. However S Antree, C Davis and H Stanley won 23-9. Later, Jubilee Park beat Norprint 10-2 but only by four shots, Ralph Pick, with Chris Avison and Margaret Broughton claiming the consolation points.

Positions: Champions, Burton House B; promoted, Jubilee Park. Results outstanding: Jubilee Park v Kirton B.

In Three Wood Division One, Norprint lost at home to Burton House A 2-10, leaving Norprint still to find at least two points to maintain their status from their final game at home to Goodfellowship. Barry Trigg, Margaret Broughton and Dave France helped with a last end win. Wyberton lost at home to Goodfellowship 4-8, losing the aggregate by one shot. Alan Bristow’s rink won 23-11 which was nearly balanced out by the home teams Mick Dodes and partners 23-10. Mick Tomlin’s 26-21 was then trumped by John Templeman’s 19-12. By the looks of the sheet this was after a stewards enquiry!

Positions: Champions, Burton House A; runners-up, BBC I; relegated, Castle plus either Burton House B 64/14 or Norprint 62/13, with shot difference close enough to matter.

Results outstanding: Norprint v Goodfellowship, Wyberton v Burton House A.

In Three Wood Division Two, a week 7 match saw Stickney lose at home to Sibsey A who are promoted as champions. Three of the four rink results were close except my rink’s loss of 9-22, and with a few ends to go the scores were very even across the board. Stickney slip to fourth. West End A beat Jubilee Park 11-1 (week 7) and finish fifth, two positions below the A team. One match remains in this division, involving promoted Kirton and relegated Wrangle.

Positions: Champions, Sibsey A; promoted, Kirton A; relegated, Jubilee Park and Wrangle. Results outstanding: Kirton A v Wrangle.

In Three Wood Division Three, two results from week 8 show Swineshead beating Sibsey B 10-2 to finish with 96 points and be promoted. Mareham, who could have overtaken Swineshead for the second promotion spot lost badly at home 2-10 to already promoted Woodhall (week 6). The game was close, with two rinks only losing by two shots. BBC II got only two points at home to Boston Park. Ken Whyers’ rink won 23-14 but it was just short of being enough to overturn the three narrow wins for the Park. The aggregate was 70-72. Both teams will finish mid table. Boston Park won 8-4 over relegated Friskney, a 24-7 from B. Chapman, C Hill and A Bachelor ensuring the aggregate. They finish third. Champions Woodhall notched up another 2-10 away to relegated Friskney by 17 shots.

Positions: Champions, Woodhall Spa Town;  promoted, Swineshead; relegated, Friskney and Gosberton. Results outstanding: Gosberton v Sibsey ‘B’, Mareham v Gosberton, Gosberton v BBC II, with Woodhall v Gosberton declared as not being played.

In Three Wood Division Four, bottom placed Sibsey C played their game from last week against Donington and won 10-2. West End C lost at home 4-8 to Woodhall. In spite of a 23-9 win for J. Carrington, F Keller and S Leafe, the aggregate was lost by two shots. Woodhall Town B lost at home to Wyberton 36-67, in what looks like either a very low scoring game or a reduced ends game. Nineteen shots over 18 ends is very tight bowling! Bottom club Sibsey C raised themselves to beat a strong West End C side 10-2. Geoff Barnes’ rink scored the consolation points with a one shot win.

Positions: Champions, Sleaford Road; promoted, West Skirbeck. Results outstanding: Wyberton v Kirton B, Sibsey C v Wyberton, West End C v Kirton B, Wyberton v Donington, Wyberton v Woodhall B.

Round-up for week ending August 19

The league has now reached the end of its scheduled programme. And, despite the thoroughly inclement summer weather, 12 teams have creditably finished their whole programmes. Most others are also within striking distance, but two teams have four matches left to play. The league finishes on August 31, but if anyone needs to play after that date, please ring accordingly. Please send sheets in promptly, and all should arrive by September 14 (rule 20). Teams should not make arrangements to “give the points” or to “share the points”. If you do not intend to play the match, please send a sheet saying so, and giving any reasons why you think you should have the points. Please be aware of the effect of your actions on teams involved in promotion or relegation.

The week 13 result sheet in Two Wood Division One notifying Goodfellowship 2 v Burton House 10 arrived on Monday showing a 65-point shot difference. Richard White’s rink won 46-10 and Bob Askey’s gang was not far behind with a 35-9. Joe Moore’s rink got the consolation points for the home team with a 25-14. In week 14, BBC I lost at home 2-10 to second placed Bicker, who have now completed their games with 96 points. A 9-39 win in favour of Roger Wing’s rink ensured the aggregate, with Jonathan and Alan West with Scott Whyers getting BBC’s points. West End B beat Goodfellowship 9-3, but it is likely both will still go down. Kirton lost at home 4-8 to Sleaford Road in a game of some big scores. Keith French, Colin Palmer and George Hardstaff won 36-9 for the visitors, and Geoff Upsall, John Rylott and Paul Wiles won 33-10. Replies of 27-20 from Stan Lawrence’s rink and 31-22 from J. Evans’ rink left the aggregate 34 shots in Sleaford Road's favour. There was no result sheet for Burton House versus Wigtoft, but it is thought to have been 10-2 so that will be temporarily included in the table.

In Two Wood Division Two, second-placed West Skirbeck managed only five points at home to fourth-placed Woodhall (7). Their captain’s rink lost 14-32 to D Crabtree and partners, Rob Day won by one shot against John Gee. P. Hyles’ set got two points more for Skirbeck while the rinks of R Rutherford and J Riglin drew. The bottom two teams played each other and it was Swineshead who came out on top 10-2 over BBC II who seem certain to go down. The top half of the division is very tight, with any two from five capable of promotion. A week three result was phoned through reporting that West End B beat Sibsey A 10-2, so this has been included. No result sheet for Wyberton versus West End A.

In Two Wood Division Three, a week 13 sheet shows that Burton House B had beaten Kirton B 12-0, so the table will be amended to show this. Big wins were recorded for the home team, with no rink scores less than 30, giving a total victory of 147-53. It will be interesting to see how Burton House B get on in the Second Division. However, they had a little setback in Division Three, being beaten 10-2 and 92-64 by Jubilee Park in a re-arranged week three game. The rinks of Frank Manley, Kath Manley and Dennis Sharpe won well, while Mark Bennett with Mary and Derek Whelbourn scraped a single shot win for the away team. In week 14, Sleaford Road and Freiston both completed their fixtures with a draw. The rinks of Fran King, John Riches and D Taylor won for the Road, but John Stray’s 25-9 was enough to gain the four aggregate points for Freiston. Woodhall B lost at home to Jubilee Park in another Woodhall Derby, the result being 2-10. But the scores cannot be commentated on because no names are entered on the Park side of the sheet. Sibsey B beat Kirton B 11-1 to get into the second promotion spot. Only Jubilee Park, with games in hand, can dislodge them. Norprint lost 2-10 to already promoted Burton House A, with Pete Vines, John Whitehouse and Graham Porter winning 56-9 for the champions.

In Three Wood Division One, as previously mentioned, the week 13 game between Burton House and Goodfellowship resulted in a 12-0, 101 to 42 shot win. In week 14, Goodfellowship beat Wigtoft 10-2 to move above them in the table. Mick Rate, helped by the Baxters, won 29-4 with R. Piggins, Jim Gott and Pip Clark gaining Wigtoft’s points. BBC I lost 2-10 at home to leaders Burton House A who, with games in hand, must be home and dry to repeat last season's success. A 37-8 for Mick Asplen, Jean Cammack and Ken Porter took care of the aggregate. Meanwhile, Burton House B gave themselves some chance of survival with an 8-4 win over a strong Wyberton side. In the basement, Norprint beat Castle 11-1, a result that will send Castle down. A week 10 sheet shows Wigtoft losing 5-7 at home to Burton House B, the aggregate being ensured for Burton by Ron Thacker, Les Nicholson and Margaret Chester's 24-8. The points are valuable to them, but the danger of relegation remains.

In Three Wood Division Two, Sibsey played Stickney on Monday night and the 10 points gained guarantees them promotion. Ten shot wins for the rink of Barry Freeston and Ivor Brown guaranteed the aggregate with Chris Clarke’s rink winning by six shots to get some consolation. A sheet with a six-all draw, and containing the footnote “this game was played” was received from Jean Sharpe at Jubilee Park. he game against West End B had two rinks each winning and the aggregate tied. The “suspicion” referred to last week was confined to re-arranged fixtures with very distinctive and unusual results. West End B get closer to third place with a 10-2 win over Freiston. No result sheet for Kirton A versus Wrangle.

In Three Wood Division Three, runaway leaders Woodhall, still with games in hand, won 10-2 over second-placed Swineshead, who could be caught for the second promotion spot. A monster 34-8 from Dave Bradshaw, Stuart Balderson and Brian Connelly and a more modest 20-11 from Josie and George Cutting with Ken Robinson ensured the 76-52 aggregate, with Lee Bristow's rink getting the points for Swineshead. In a week seven game, Mareham beat Boston Park 11-1, to keep in the upper half of the table, R Moore, P Moore with captain Pete Smith winning 36-4. A game at the wrong end of the table saw Friskney lose at home to Sibsey B by 3-9, leaving Friskey and Gosberton likely to drop to Division Four. Gosberton versus BBC II was postponed and rearranged for August 31.

In Three Wood Division Four, Kirton B lost 0-12 at home to Sleaford Road and West Skirbeck registered a genuine six-all draw away to West End C. Only one of the West End rinks, skipped by Keith Swain, won, but the margin of 27-6 was enough to gain the aggregate by four shots. It looks as though Sleaford Road and West Skirbeck will be promoted even though West End C have three games next week. No result sheets were received for Wyberton versus Woodhall B or from Donington versus Sibsey C.

Round-up for week ending August 12

A continuation of the fine weather has enabled most games to be played on schedule, and a number of re-arranged games are being fitted in also. Please help me by marking on the sheet when the match should have been played, the week number would be best but the date would also be useful. Next week is the last week of the schedule, and most teams are no longer involved in knockout competitions, so, if the weather holds, most teams may yet finish their games.

In Two Wood Division One, Kirton drew with BBC I in a scheduled match, the only winning rink being courtesy of Stan Lawrence’s rink 30-11. More modest wins from the BBC skips enabled Kirton to take the aggregate 91-88. Sleaford Road drew level on points by beating them 12-0 on Tuesday, and then went 12 points clear by beating Goodfellowship on all rinks on Wednesday. Wigtoft have regained their form and saw off West End B 12-0 and by 40 shots. 111 is the maximum any of the chasing pack can get, but it is now likely that Sleaford Road will be champions. There was no result sheet from the Goodfellowship v Burton House match, but I am told that it was 2-10 and this has been recorded for the league table.

In Two Wood Division Two, West End A beat table-toppers West Skirbeck 11-1, to overtake them. The captain was 18-7 down after 15 ends, but won eight of the last 10 to draw 22-22 helped by Peter Myers and Dorothy Hawkesworth. I will forgive him for sending the result in on an EBA sheet. Swineshead got no points at home to Sibsey A who won well on all rinks. BBC II beat Boston Park by 9-3 but only six shots and Woodhall slipped up at home to Wyberton. They lost 4-8 with Keith Woods’ rink snatching the aggregate with a 20 shot win. Last week’s result from Swineshead shows them winning 8-4, with big wins for the rinks skipped by R Turner and M Nichols.

In Two Wood Division Three, Jubilee Park, with a number of games yet to be played, beat Sleaford Road 10-2, and if they keep up their current form could still easily make the second promotion spot. In the week seven fixture between the Woodhall teams, Jubilee Park beat Woodhall Spa Town 12-0. Sibsey B helped their promotion chances by beating bottom placed Norprint 10-2. However second placed Freiston also got 10 at home to Woodhall. In spite of a 36-13 win for Woodhall by D. Smith, N. Johnson and C. Smith, Woodhall still lost the aggregate by 19 shots. There was no result sheet for the Burton House B v Kirton B fixture but I am told that it was 10-2 and this has been recorded for the league table.

In Three Wood Division One, Norprint lost 4-8 to Wyberton in a relegation zone struggle. Barry Barton and Ralph Pick skipped their rinks to modest wins, but Wyberton won the aggregate points 76-64. In a rearranged week seven game, Wyberton also beat Burton House B 10-2. These two results will lift Wyberton out of the relegation zone. Mid-table Wigtoft beat second placed BBCI 8-4, the 22-10 by M Campbell, J Gott and P Clark influencing the aggregate. Burton House B beat fellow strugglers 8-4 to make up ground, but both teams could face the drop. There was no result sheet for Goodfellowship v Burton House A but I am told that it was 0-12 and this has been recorded for the league table.

In Three Wood Division Two, the two promotion slots are likely to be occupied by either Sibsey A, Kirton or Stickney. On Monday, Stickney beat West End A 8-4, with rink wins from myself, for a change, and Roy Rout. The West End rinks skipped by Ralph Sawer and Geoff Barnes came within four shots of the aggregate. On Wednesday, Stickney visited Kirton in a re-arranged week right match and failed dismally losing all the points. On Monday, Kirton had previously won away at Freiston 2-10, so are looking a good bet for one of the places. In a re-arranged week eight game on Wednesday, Freiston lost at home to West End A 1-11. Sibsey meanwhile beat Jubilee Park 9-3 in a very close game, six being the highest winning score. Sibsey and Stickney play each other twice on the next two Mondays, so there is still all to play for. West End B gathered all the points at home to Wrangle, Eric Ulyatt’s rink winning 32-6.

In Three Wood Division Three, leaders Woodhall, with matches in hand, beat third placed Mareham le Fen 8-4. A 30-15 from Dave Bradshaw, Stuart Balderstone and Brian Connelly helped secure a 7 shot aggregate. Meanwhile, Boston Park beat second placed Swineshead 10-2. BBC II, doing quite well, beat Sibsey ‘B’, doing slightly less well by 10 point to 2. A 22-9 rink score from A Houlden, T Johns and A Mason helped secure the aggregate of 75-60, with only P Woods, P Stubley and R Dennis scoring for the visitors. The bottom two teams played each other, with Friskney winning 8-4, but the aggregate was only three shots.

In Three Wood Division Four, from week 12, Donington beat second placed West Skirbeck 8-4 in a game that either team could have won, no rink winning by more than a 4 shot margin and the aggregate being 69-64. West Skirbeck did better in a re-arranged week 8 game, beating Sleaford Road 10-2. Third placed Kirton meanwhile lost at home to Woodhall 4-8, again in a well-balanced game. West End C won 10-2 at home to Donington, and with matches in hand can still do well. Seventh placed Wyberton beat top dogs Sleaford Road 8-4, whereas bottom placed Sibsey C lost 0-12 to West Skirbeck who now go top. Very good wins for the rinks of John Whyers, John Stevens and Lorraine Stevens, with a closer effort from Barry Bagley’s rink secured a massive 65-point advantage.

Round-up for week ending August 5

A 6-6 draw is statistically a rare result, so it raises eyebrows when a number of these occur in matches that are re-stagings of postponed matches. Combined with a ‘whisper in my ear’ that a captain is offering to ‘share the points’ rather than replay the match means that ‘six-all’ draws will be closely looked at if certain teams are involved.

In Two Wood Division One, we now have the sheet for the week 11 game between Burton House and BBC I. The 8-4 result is confirmed and notable are huge wins for Richard White, 53-8, and Ken Porter 42-5. Scott Whyers rink picked up the points for BBC. We have a full set of results for week 12. BBC I lost by 5 shots and 2-10 at home to contenders Sleaford Road. The scores indicate a close match that could have gone either way. West End B effectively put an end to Burton House’s dwindling hopes by beating them 9-3.The rinks of Eric Ulyatt and John Fensom won by enough shots to cancel out a 30-15 reply by Richard White. Peter Tracey and Ken Porter drew. Goodfellowship lost further ground at he bottom with a 4-8 defeat by Wigtoft, who are not totally out danger themselves. Big wins by P Clark 37-11 and G Wilkinson 30-13 secured the aggregate. One time runaway leaders Bicker are steadily being reeled in. This week they fell 3-9 at home to Kirton. Stan Lawrence’s 30-16 gained the aggregate for Kirton whilst Roger Wing and Roy Vinter drew.

Positions: Bicker points 86/played 12, Sleaford Road 74/9, Kirton A 69/10, BBC I 66/10, Burton House 65/10, Wigtoft 55/11, West End B 43/10, Goodfellowship 34/10.

In Two Wood Division Two, again in week 11, BBC II lost at home to Wyberton 2-10. All rinks were reasonably close and the aggregate only 15. Also Swineshead lost at home to West Skirbeck 2-10, again with tight rink scores, John Stevens’ 8-shot win being the biggest. A re-arranged match between BBC II and West Skirbeck, from week 3, resulted in a 2-10 home defeat. On the following day Skirbeck were away to Wyberton and again got 10 points, with John Stevens’ 46-7 being spectacular. The 30 points gained take Skirbeck take them from seventh to the top. Woodhall drop to third after losing at home 2-10 to West End A who are second. Good wins for R. Holmes, with some good partners, John Sellers and R. Blackamore got the points whilst the captain lost to John Gee. Sibsey A beat BBC II 10-2 making the losers certain relegation candidates.

In Three Wood Division One, the result from week 11 of Burton House B 2, Burton House A 10 is now here and entered, a big 26-5 win from Mick Asplen being notable. Also a re-arranged week 8 match from Castle saw them lose at home 2-10 to Wigtoft. Only Stan Avison won for the home team, with steady wins for the Wigtoft skips of Wilkinson, Saunby and Rooney. A sheet which, after some investigation, was shown to be a rearranged week 8 match between Burton House B and BBC I resulted in a 2-10 result. Norprint lost at home to Burton House B 4-8, with a good away win for Pete Vines by 28-8. The aggregate was only 3. Meanwhile at the opposite end of the table, leaders Burton House A beat Wigtoft 12-0 and seem a safe bet for the championship. Wyberton beat Castle 8-4, and move closer to safety, whilst Goodfellowship lost 4-8 at home to second placed BBC I.

Positions: Burton House A 101/10, BBC I 95/12, Goodfellowship 68/10, Wigfoft 62/11, Castle 50/12, Norprint 45/10, Wyberton 44/9, Burton House B 39/10.

In the lower end of the division, Freiston beat Wrangle 7-5 to keep just above them, with a 33-5 from Sandra Tebbs making all the difference. Stickney beat Jubilee Park 10-2 to stay second, with the author’s rink being 0-14 down after three ends. A change of skip retrieved the position to 17-22. Kirton lost at home to West End B 2-10, to drop to third, with Eric Ulyatt’s rink winning 24-8 for West End.

Positions: Sibsey A 87/10, Stickney 83/10, Kirton A 78/11, West End B 64/11, West End A 54/10, Freiston 54/11, Wrangle 49/12, Jubilee Park 47/11.

Second placed Swineshead beat third placed , Mareham 10-2, while Boston Park lost at home to Woodhall 4-8, but only by 3 shots. In Three Wood Division Four, a late-arriving week 11 result is Donington and Sleaford Road drawing, with the rink of T Bush, P Atkin and S Taylor being the only Sleaford Road winning rink, but winning well enough to snatch the aggregate by 4 shots. In week 12, Sleaford Road were away to Woodhall and won 8-4, by only by 6 shots. West End C beat Sibsey C 10-2 again by only 5 shots. Kirton B beat Wyberton 10-2 to stay in the running.

Round-up for week ending July 29

Week 11 of the 14-week season has now passed and many clubs are still behind with their fixtures. It is important to remember that most clubs play in a number of other leagues in addition to this one, so it is difficult to judge progress with the backlog. Inevitably some clubs will not complete their fixtures. I would like to ask the various fixture secretaries to contact me, preferably in writing, to let me know what games will not be played, together with any other information that the committee will need to consider. Please be aware of rules 14, 15, 16 and 20.

In Two Wood Division One, Wigtoft, back from their holidays, were sufficiently refreshed to beat third placed Sleaford Road 8-4. Pip Clark and Seamus Rooney’s rinks for Wigtoft outscored Les Feary and Paul Wiles to gain the aggregate. Kirton had a comprehensive 12-0 win over Goodfellowship, with Roy Vinter’s rink scoring 36 and John Evans rink going even better with 42 in a 129-55 romp. Bottom placed West End ‘B’ upset the form-book with a 10-2 win over top team Bicker, with Peter Tracey, J. Fensom and Eric Ulyatt’s rinks all posting wins. We have no sheet in yet for Burton House v BBC I, but my mole tells me that it was 8-4 to the home team. If this is so, Bicker are still strong favourites, with Sleaford Road, who have to play them and have games in hand, with the best chance of catching them. I suspect that the hopes of anyone else have gone for a Burton. No results sheet for Burton House v BBC I but reported result is included in the table.

In Two Wood Division Two, strugglers Sibsey A managed a 9-3 win over leaders West End A which will bring them closer to safety. Three rinks were close, but the West End captain went down quite heavily again. Boston Park and Woodhall drew in an unusual way. Boston Park won on three rinks to get their six points, but G Cutting and partners won by 42-4 for Woodhall to get the aggregate by 16 shots and their share of the points. No results sheets as yet for Swineshead v W. Skirbeck and BBC II v Wyberton.

In Two Wood Division Three, mid-table Sleaford Road lost 4-8 at home to second placed Sibsey B. In a re-arranged week one game Kirton drew 6-6 with Jubilee Park. Only one Kirton rink, Dave Gill’s won, the others lost by 2, 1 and 1, so Dave’s nine shots netted the other four points. Again there were no clues on the sheet that this was a re-arranged fixture. In the battle of the basement, Woodhall help their survival chances with a 8-4 win over Kirton. Two rinks were won by each side, but a 37-15 by S Anstee, C Hawkins and J Anstee ensured the extra four points by 102-76. Third placed Freiston lost ground when losing to runaway leaders Burton House B by 2-10. No sheet yet for Jubilee Park v Norprint.

In Three Wood Division One, Norprint lost 3-9 at home to second placed BBC I. Barbara Kenny, Chris Avison and Ralph Pick had a good win for the home team while skips Barry Barton and Ron Flower drew. Big wins by Gus Grant and Scott Whyers bagged the aggregate for BBC. Bottom team Wyberton won 10-2 at home to Wigtoft in a close match. Two rinks were drawn, Wyberton won the others by one shot and seven shots and so got the bulk of the points. Castle lost at home to Goodfellowship 4-8 with both sides winning two rinks but John Templeman’s rink won the extra 4 points with a 34-11 win. No sheet for the Burton House derby, but I hear that the A team won 10-2, and that the B team’s points were courtesy of a six on the last end. No sheet yet for Burton House ‘B’ v Burton House ‘A’ but reported result included.

In Two Wood Division Two, climbers Stickney got all the points away to Wrangle in a very tight game. With two ends to go, the points were shared, but in the end the rink wins were 2, 2, 1 and 7. Kirton set the pace at the top with a 12-0 win over Jubilee Park, including a big win for Ken Rawlings, Tony Nixon and Stan Lawrence. Freiston lost 3-9 to third placed Sibsey ‘A’. Keith Stones’ rink won by two for the home team, and John Stray and Ivor Brown drew, but good wins by Dave Bridges and Gordon Wells won the aggregate 92-69. In the West End derby, having correctly identified themselves, B beat A 12-0 to move from bottom to fourth.

The BBC II Three Wood Division Three results always appear through my letter box before I get up, this week’s recording an 8-4 win over Mareham although the aggregate was only four shots. Top dogs Woodhall Town beat Sibsey B 10-2, a big win by B Connelly’s rink 22-5 just overpowering a 21-9 by R Dennis for Sibsey to grab the extra points. Swineshead, in second place, drew with bottom team Gosberton, in spite of losing on three rinks. A 32-8 by P Rickett, D Armstrong and J Bannister saved the four extra points. No sheet as yet for Boston Park v Friskney.

In Three Wood Division Four, second placed West Skirbeck drew 6-6 with third placed Kirton B. Only one rink won for the home team, Rob Rutherford and partners and the shots were 50-49. West End C lost 0-12 at home to lowly Wyberton. Rink losses of 1, 3, 1 and 11 meant that with a different result may have been possible. Meanwhile Sibsey C won 8-4 against Woodhall B, but the win still leave them bottom. No sheet in as yet Donington v Sleaford Road.

Round-up for week ending July 22

It was a reasonably fine week on the nights of three-wood action. This, though, was in sharp contrast to the heavy rainfall on Tuesday. It is good to see results from re-arranged matches trickling in. Hopefully we shall get to the end of the season with all games played. Captains are asked to assist by highlighting those sheets that are rearranged matches.

In Two Wood Division One, potential champions Bicker continue their good run with a win over outside chance challengers Burton House. The win was by a comprehensive 10-2 margin. BBC I v Wigtoft was postponed due to the Wigtoft team being either on holiday or the wrong shift. No result was in for Sleaford Road v Goodfellowship or West End B v Kirton so I assume that they were rained off.

Positions: Bicker 81 points/10 played, BBC I 60/8, Sleaford Road 60/7, Burton House 54/8, Kirton A 48/8, Wigtoft 39/9, Goodfellowship 30/8, West End B 24/8.

In Two Wood Division Two, second placed Woodhall won 8-2 against mid-table Swineshead in this very tight division. Boston Park lost at home 2-10 to West End A. Although three West End rinks won narrowly, they only got the four aggregate points by one shot, as the only Park win was an 18-8 by D Young and partners. The match between West Skirbeck and BBC II was postponed, as was the Wyberton v Sibsey A fixture.

Positions: West End A 67/10, Woodhall 66/9, Wyberton 60/8, Swineshead 57/9, Boston Park 56/11, West Skirbeck 52/8, Sibsey A 46/9, BBC II 28/8.

In Two Wood Division Three, we start this week with a time-warp. I have just received the result of a game that was played on the June 26 between Kirton B and Sibsey B. The home team lost 2-10 as there were two big wins for Sibsey, I Brown winning 45-6 and W. West 34-5. R. Fant replied with the two points for Kirton. Back to the present, Sibsey B beat Freiston 9-3, going someway towards narrowing the gap at the top. Norprint had a good win at home over Woodhall by 8-4, though both are still in the drop zone. Bottom placed Kirton beat Sleaford Road 8-4 to keep in contention. Assumed postponed is Burton House B v Jubilee Park.

Positions: Burton House B 87/8, Sibsey B 67/10, Freiston 66/9, Sleaford Rd. 40/10, Jubilee Park 38/5, Norprint 34/8, Woodhall B 34/8, Kirton B 30/8.

In Three Wood Division One Castle, who were languishing near the foot of the table, won away at the league leaders BBC I by a margin of 10-2 and 22 shots. Wigtoft v Burton House B was postponed. Goodfellowship won 10-2 against Wyberton who were playing a man short. Mick Rate scored a 34-7 rink win with the Baxters. Burton House A played Norprint and collected an 11-1 win, with Mick Asplen’s rink winning well. In the same week, the Burton House derby postponed from week 4 was played, with the A team getting all the points, with the B team cast adrift at the foot of the table with Wyberton.

Positions: Burton House A 79/8, BBC I 68/9, Goodfellowship 56/8, Wigtoft 50/8, Castle 40/9, Norprint 38/8, Burton House B 27/7, Wyberton 26/7.

In Three Wood Division Two, in the game between two mid-table sides, Stickney beat Freiston 8-4, both teams winning two rinks. Roy Rout’s 24-7 win outweighed Barry Harrington’s 22-7, with the other rinks being fairly even. Rain stopped play shortly after 54 ends had been completed, so we scurried to the pavilion and watched the green flood. The return fixture from week three was also played this week, resulting in a 10-2 away win for Stickney. A good win for A. Harrison, Wally Long and Penny Giles helped to balance out a big win for Freiston by Barry Harrington with Ian and Matthew Smith. In the battle at the wrong end of the table, Jubilee Park beat fellow strugglers Wrangle 10-2, with narrow wins on all rinks while, in a week three game, Wrangle beat Jubilee Park 10-2. West End A lost 4-8 at home to Kirton A. Both teams won two rinks, but the aggregate was sealed for the visitors by good wins from the rinks of Geoff Parker and Ray Woods. West End B played a rearranged match against Jubilee Park, and won 10-2 in spite of playing one player short. A 21-3 win for John Fensom’s rink helped to collect the aggregate 62-49.

Positions: Kirton A 64/9, Stickney 61/8, Sibsey A 58/7, West End A 62/7, Jubilee Park 45/9, Freiston 44/9, Wrangle 42/9, West End B 42/9.

In Three Wood Division Three, in a week of upsets, Friskney — in seventh place — beat second placed Mareham 11-1. Eric Booley’s rink won 23-6, whist Janet Booley won 23-11. Neil Salmon scraped in by one shot, while George Bembridge drew. The result of Swineshead 10, BBC II 2 should open up a gap between the top three and the pack. Although gaining most of the points, the win was only by 2 shots, with a 21-9 by A Houlden, F Cropley and A Mason nearly converting it to a 6-6. Sibsey B got 4 points at home to Boston Park (8), again the aggregate was only two shots. Bottom placed and a few points adrift, Gosberton scored 3-9 at home to top club Woodhall. Three rinks were quite close, with one big win for Woodhall.

Positions: Woodhall 75/7, Swineshead 66/9, Mareham 59/8, Boston Park 54/9, Sibsey B 42/8, BBC II 42/9, Friskney 41/9, Gosberton 17/7

In Three Wood Division Four, a re-arranged week eight game saw Donington salvage four points against Woodhall B in spite of being two players short. These rinks lost heavily, but the two rinks with a full complement won 13-12 and 15-14. Runaway winners Sleaford Road beat strugglers Sibsey C 10-2, with Marion Hopper, Mabs Sturgess and John Hodgson getting the consolation points for Sibsey. A 25-6 win by Chantel, John and Craig Spencer gained the aggregate points for Sleaford Road. Woodhall Town lost at home 2-10 to West End C, with a 24-7 for J Dews, P Carter and E Dews helping West End gain the extra four points. Second placed West Skirbeck won 10-2 against third placed Donington in a week five game, and opened up a gap that the rest of the division may find hard to bridge. Kirton B just kept in touch with a 10-2 win again over Donington. Bottom placed Wyberton beat second placed West Skirbeck 12-0 to move up to seventh, but still not in touch with the pack above. Skirbeck remain second, due to a good win in their game in hand.

Positions: Sleaford Road 78/9, W. Skirbeck 66/9, Kirton B 55/8, Donington 53/9, West End C 42/7, Woodhall B 38/8, Wyberton 27/7, Sibsey C 25/8.

At this stage in the season, teams should have played 10 of their 14 games. Due to the weather, virtually all teams are behind, and in some cases still falling further behind. We must keep our fingers crossed and hope that the weather settles down a little, particularly in the week beginning August 20 when much of the backlog is now programmed.

Round-up for week ending July 15

The weather has returned to near normality and the results are the only things that are flooding in.

In Two Wood Division One, BBC I have risen up the table as a result of a 12-0 win over the struggling Goodfellowship. Scoring more than 30 shots on each rink, they notched up a 133-60 aggregate that may stand them in good stead at the end of the season. Leaders Bicker scored 10 points against Wigtoft, which keeps them top of the table. Sleaford Road scored a maximum at home against West End B, and the match between Kirton and Burton House was not played.

Two Wood Division Two is a tight division, with 13 points covering seven of the eight teams. West Skirbeck, who were seventh, will shoot up the table as a result of a 10-2 win over Sibsey A who were sixth. Rob Rutherford had a good win for Skirbeck and Sue Bridges for Sibsey. In a tight game, Woodhall Town lost at home to BBC II 3-9, but only by five shots. Wyberton took all the points at home to Boston Park to go top of the table, whilst West End A beat Swineshead 10-2 with R Blackamore’s rink scoring 41 shots. Only the West End captain dropped points. This is still a tight division with both promotion slots up for grabs.

In Two Wood Division Three, Sibsey B and Jubilee Park both won two rinks in their game, but the aggregate went to Sibsey due to an 18 shot win by Ivor Brown’s rinks giving the home team eight points. Freiston beat Kirton B by 10-2, with good wins on three rinks and Burton House B scored another maximum at home against Woodhall. The game between Norprint and Sleaford Road. was drawn 6-6. In spite of winning only one rink, the home team won the aggregate thanks to a 32-11 win by P West and partners.

In Three Wood Division One, leaders BBC I won 9-3 in a tight game against Wyberton. No rink won by more than four shots and one was drawn, the aggregate dividing margin being just four shots. Second placed Wigtoft scored only two points at home to strugglers Norprint who bagged 10 points, a 10-shot rink win by R Vinter contributing to the overall seven-shot aggregate. Goodfellowship scored a 12-0 win against the Burton House second string, while Burton House A fared better with a 10-2 win over Castle, with Stan Avison’s rink scoring the consolation points.

In Three Wood Division Two, Jubilee Park eased their relegation worries with a 10-2 win over mid-table Freiston. The game between the two top teams saw Sibsey A beat Kirton A 10-2. Sibsey will now go top. Mid-table Stickney beat West End B 9-3. Stickney, fielding players with ages from 13 to 89, enjoyed a big win from Bill Bellamy, Wally Long and Penny Giles, West End’s points coming from a draw and a single shot win. West End A beat Wrangle 8-4 with Geoff Barnes’ rink scoring a good win.

In Three Wood Division Three, Sibsey B shared the points with Mareham. The visitors won on three rinks, but Sibsey won the aggregate by one shot thanks to a 21-10 from Ray Dennis and partners. Woodhall, second placed with matches in hand, proved too strong for the BBC second string, winning all 12 points at the Robin Hoods Walk ground. Gosberton lost narrowly at home by 7 shots to Boston Park, but won on only one rink and so only got two points.

In Three Wood Division Four Third placed West Skirbeck won all the points away at Woodhall. Barry Bagley had some good partners helping him to a 26-11 win. West End C beat runaway leaders Sleaford Road at home. Each side had two big rink wins, but the aggregate went by just two shots to the visitors. Kirton A beat Sibsey 8-4 in a low scoring game. No players names were submitted on the Sibsey side of the sheet, so there is little opportunity for commentary. There is no result yet for Wyberton v Donington, but it may still be in the sorting office.

Round-up for week ending July 8

The start of week eight in the Boston and District Bowls League was again a soggy affair, causing yet more postponements in the three-wood section. Some two-wood games were played on Tuesday, but the three-wood section was badly hit again on Wednesday.

The previously missing sheet from Sleaford Road versus Kirton A has arrived. As reported the result was 10-2. I cannot report who got the two points for Kirton as no players’ names were entered on their side of the sheet.

In week of Two Wood Division One action, eight, title contenders Bicker beat Goodfellowship 9-3. Roger Wing got a good 38-11 success for Bicker with Joe Moore and John Templeman getting the Goodfellowship’s share of the spoils. Kirton A, in sixth place, beat Wigtoft, in fifth, 12-0 and by a margin of 38 shots. The other two games — West End B versus BBC I and the Burton House versus Sleaford Road encounter — were not played.

In Two Wood Division Two, Swineshead took four points out of their game against Wyberton. Even though Wyberton won three rinks to the home team's one, the aggregate was shared. This was achieved by a 24-7 win by Jed Bouchereau’s rink. BBC II lost all the points at home to West End A, rooting themselves to the foot of the table. Just above them, West Skirbeck scored 10 points away to Boston Park bringing them closer to the pack. A 41-12 win for John Stevens’ rink ensured the aggregate was won. Sibsey A v Woodhall was not played,

The success of Burton House B in Two Wood Division Three continues, with a 49 shot full house win away at Sleaford Road. Woodhall Town lost 4-8 at home to Sibsey B, who can thank Ivor Brown's rink's 29 shot win for gaining the aggregate with a few shots to spare.

There were no results from the Three Wood Division One and Two sections. But much to my surprise, a Three Wood Division Three game was played on Monday July 2. The canvasses were out at Woodhall Town for the game against Friskney, the result being a 12-0 home win.

Two results from Wednesday June 27 in Three Wood Division Four show Donington beating Sibsey C by 10-2, aided by a 36-12 result from Aubrey Bristow, with John Marshall narrowly grabbing the consolation points for Sibsey. Second-placed West Skirbeck fared badly losing 2-10 at home to West End C, with Ron Holmes' rink notching up a 41-3 for the visitors.

The following matches are outstanding, assumed postponed, after the first half of the season, with the week number in brackets.

2 Wood Division One: Goodfellowship v Sleaford Rd (3). 2 Wood Division Two: Wyberton v Swineshead (1), BBC II v West Skirbeck (3). 2 Wood Division Three: Kirton B v Jubilee Park (1), Jubilee Park v Burton House B (3), Woodhall v Norprint (3), Kirton 'B' v Sibsey B (7), Jubilee Park v Woodhall (7). 3 Wood Division One: Wyberton v Goodfellowship (3), Norprint v Burton House A (3), Burton House A v Burton House B (4), Wyberton v Burton House B (7). 3 Wood Division Two: Wrangle v Jubilee Park (3), Freiston v Stickney (3), West End B v Sibsey A (3), West End A v Jubilee Park (7), Stickney v Sibsey A (7), Freiston v West End B (7). 3 Wood Division Three: Friskney v Woodhall (1), Woodhall v Gosberton (3), Gosberton v Sibsey B (5), Mareham v Woodhall (6), Mareham v Boston Park (7). 3 Wood Division Four: West End C v Woodhall (3), Wyberton v Kirton B (5), Sibsey C v West End C (5), West Skirbeck v Donington (5), Woodhall B v Wyberton (7).

Those re-arranging fixtures are reminded of rules 14, 15 and 16, and asked to exercise co-operation and common sense when approached to sort out matches.

Round-up for week ending July 1

Week seven arrived with torrential rain in the early hours of Monday morning. Although this ceased in mid-morning, some greens remained unplayable. In addition, the postal dispute has delayed some results from Tuesday and Wednesday.

In Two Wood Division One, when Bicker played Sleaford Road either team knew they could take the top spot in the table from Burton House. When the result sheet arrived the day after the tables were sent for publication, it showed that Bicker had won 12–0 (101-71). In week seven, Wigtoft lost at home to Burton House 4-8, but only by seven shots thanks to a good win by Bob Askey of 37-14 for BH. Goodfellowship lost a home also by 4-8, West End B winning thanks to John Fenson’s rinks huge 50-4 shot win. Bicker surprisingly lost at home to BBC I in a tight game with some very narrow rink wins. Although the sheet is not to hand, I am told that Sleaford Road won 10-2 against Kirton. So Bicker remain top on shot difference from Burton House, with BBC I and Sleaford Road a further four points behind, although the Peck Avenue club have a match in hand.

In Two Wood Division Two, in a week seven match, West End A were well beaten at home by a strong Wyberton team, 2–10 being the score. Sibsey A beat Boston Park 10-2, with a 21-shot win for D Bridges for the home side and a 21-shot win for C Hill for the Park closing the aggregate to 90-79. Woodhall beat West Skirbeck 10-2 and BBC II beat Swineshead 11-1 although the aggregate was only 17. Woodhall are top with a three-point lead over Boston Park who have played a game more. Even after this week’s win, BBC II are still well adrift at the bottom.

In Two Wood Division Three, the Burton House B bandwagon continues to roll with another 12-0 win, this week’s victims being Norprint. With one defeat and 63 points out of 72 played for, they have the best record in the divisions. Freiston B beat the Sleaford Road second string 10-2. No results in week seven for this league yet.

In Three Wood Division One, a one-sided result, 12-0 (89 shots to 29) was posted by Burton House A over table toppers BBC I. Castle lost 2-10 at home to Norprint, in what looks from the scores, to maybe be an abbreviated game. Wigtoft beat Goodfellowship by five shots which gave them an 8-4 win and took them to second in the table.

In Three Wood Division Two Wrangle beat leaders Kirton A 10-2, with only Ray Woods getting the points for Kirton who remain top.

In Three Wood Division Three, Gosberton and Friskney drew 6-6, each with 74 shots, in a week six encounter. In one of the matches that did take place on June 25, Gosberton lost 12-0 away at BBC II. Later in the week, Sibsey B beat Friskney 8-4, with the four aggregate points being decided by only one shot. Swineshead remain top in spite of losing 0-12 at home to Woodhall. They have though played more games than anyone else, with Woodhall having only played 4. At the bottom of the table, Gosberton are adrift.

In Three Wood Division Four, top dogs Sleaford Road triumphed 8-4 over Wyberton in a week six match. Mareham versus Woodhall was not played, this being the only postponement from week six. In week seven, Sleaford Road posted a 12-0 (58-shot) win over Kirton B. Sleaford Road lead the table by 24 shots, but others have matches in hand.

All in all, a disrupted week. I hope that captains and secretaries are busy trying to fit in the postponed games.

Round-up for week ending June 24

I ask captains to take care when filling in the results sheets. You have one sheet to deal with. I have 28. Please at least fill in the date, whether it is two wood or three wood and the division. This week I had one sheet missing the names of the teams playing as well! Admittedly, though, that is an exception, I am glad to say. For all those that already do this, thank you.

Two Wood Division One: Burton House 12, West End B 0; Sleaford Rd 10, BBC I 2 (a convincing win from Keith French and more modest ones from Paul Wiles and Les Feary gained the aggregate points by 13 shots, with only Scott Whyers rink gaining a 9-shot win for BBC); BBC I 2, Kirton 10; West End B 8, Wigtoft 4; Burton House 10, Goodfellowship 2.

Two Wood Division Two:  Boston Park 12, BBC II 0; Sibsey A 4, Swineshead 8 (with both teams winning two rinks, a 25-13 win for M Nicholls’ rink got the aggregate by 4 points for Swineshead); Wyberton 4, Woodhall 8; West Skirbeck 10, West End A 2.

Two Wood Division Three: Kirton B 0, Burton House B 12 (it is getting a safe bet to back the Burton House second string for division 2 bowls next year); Norprint 4, Sibsey B 8; Woodhall 4, Freiston 8; Sleaford Rd 0, Jubilee Park 12.

Three Wood section: Burton House B 46, Norprint 4; Heavy rain brought about the postponement of the matches between Gosberton and Sibsey C (3w d3) and West Skirbeck and Donington (3w d4). Also no sheets have been returned for Wyberton v Kirton B and Sibsey C v West End C so I assume that they were also called off.

Three Wood Division One: Castle 4, Burton House B 8 (Burton House won the aggregate by five shots due to a big win by Audrey Sivill, new boy Roy Bennett and G Porter); BBC I 10, Wigtoft 2; Wyberton 4, Norprint 8 (Norprint gained the aggregate points by four shots thanks to a 11-shot win by Ralph Pick’s set); Burton House A 2, Goodfellowship 10.

Three Wood Division Two: West End A 12, Stickney 0 (the less said the better!); Kirton A 8, Freiston 4 (Geoff Parker’s rink bagged the extra four points); Jubilee Park 4, Sibsey A 8; Wrangle 10, West End B 2.

Three Wood Division Three: Swineshead 12, Boston Park 0; Sibsey B 6, BBC II 6 (a rare draw with each side winning two rinks and scoring 53 shots).

Three Wood Division Four: Woodhall Town 12, Kirton B 0; Donington 10, West End C 2; West Skirbeck 10, Sibsey C 2 (Barry Bagley’s win of 25-7 being notable).

Round-up for week ending June 17

The league tables fully updated last week (featured above) will bring joy to some, reassurance to some and dismay to others. In the two wood section, Burton House A must be disappointed with two ducks from their Division One team, while the new Division Three team have got off to a flying start with 35 out of 36 points. In the three wood section, Division Three outfit Mareham, who got promoted in their first season, are going very well. I feel the need to check whether results I am missing are the result of postponements rather than postal malfunctions. Missing are: week 1 – 2w d2 Wyberton v Swineshead, 2w d3 Kirton B v Jubilee Pk, 2w d3 Friskney v Woodhall; week 3 – 2w d1 Goodfellowship v Sleaford Rd; 2w d2 BBC2 v West Skirbeck, 2w d3 Jubilee Pk v Burton House B, Woodhall v Norprint; 3w d1 Wyberton v Goodfellowship, Norprint v Burton House A, 3w d2 Wrangle v Jubilee Pk, Freiston v Stickney, West End B v Sibsey A, 3w d3 Woodhall v Gosberton, 3w d4 West End C v Woodhall B. I am aware of many of these call-offs thanks to those captains involved. However, if there is a game that has been played and is on the list above, please let me know.

Recent results are:

Week Three:

Two Wood Division Two: West End A 2, Boston Park 10

Week four:

Two Wood Division Three: Sibsey B 8, Burton House B 4 (this is the first lost game for the new Burton House team. Each side won two rinks well, with the aggregate going in favour of the home side by 91 to 89); Woodhall Spa 8, Sleaford Road 4; Freiston 10, Jubilee Park 2; Norprint 0, Kirton B 12.

Three Wood Division One: BBC I 10, Goodfellowship 2; Castle 2, Wyberton 10 (a stronger Wyberton team more than doubled the side’s points); Wigtoft 2, Burton House A 10.

Three Wood Division Two: Jubilee Park 0, Stickney 12; Sibsey A 10, West End A 2; West End B 2, Kirton 10 (a poor week for the West End teams); Wrangle 2, Freiston 10.

Three Wood Division Three: Woodhall Town 12, Boston Park 0; Friskney 10, BBC II 2; Mareham 10, Swineshead 2 (a comprehensive win for the home team in the game between two strong sides).

Round-up for weeks ending May 27 and June 3

I returned from holiday to find 53 results sheets waiting for me from the opening throes of the new season. Having spent most of the following day getting wet at Burton House and then drying out again, I set out to deal with the results on Monday.

In week one, the following results were submitted:

Two Wood Division One: Wigtoft 10, Kirton A 2; Bicker 4, Goodfellowship 8; BBC 10, West End B 2; Sleaford Road 12, Burton House 0. There was a good start for Sleaford Road, with 105 shots scored to Burton House’s 77. Three rinks were close, although there was a comprehensive win by L Feary of 29-13.

Two Wood Division Two: Woodhall Spa Town 8, Sibsey A 4; West Skirbeck 10, Boston Park 2; West End B 10, BBC II 2; Wyberton v Swineshead (postponed).

Two Wood Division Three: Sibsey B 8, Woodhall Spa Town 4; Norprint 10, Freiston 2, Burton House B 12, Sleaford Road 0. Burton House’s second string are a new team to the league and got quickly off the blocks by winning well on all rinks against Sleaford Road. No result sheet has been submitted for Kirton B v Jubilee Park.

Three Wood Division One: Wigtoft 4, Castle 8; Burton House A 10, Wyberton 2; Goodfellowship 10, Norprint 2; BBC I 11, Burton House B 1. A win for BBC by 101 shots to 47. Burton House were two players short, and on a full rink Jonathan West, Alan West and Scott Whyers won 29-9.

Three Wood Division Two: Sibsey 12, Wrangle 0; Jubilee Park 10, West End B 2; West End A 12, Freiston 0; Stickney 8, Kirton A 4. Big wins of 27-10 for Ray Woods and 30-6 for Roy Rout left the aggregate at 70-62 to Stickney.

Three Wood Division Three: Boston Park 8, BBC II 4; Sibsey B 2, Swineshead 10; Gosberton 2, Mareham 10. Mareham only joined the league last year and were promoted as champions. Good rink wins from J Keeney 33-7 and John Bontoft 37–4 secured the aggregate whilst Bob Bemrose secured two points for Gosberton.

No result sheet has been submitted for Friskney vs Woodhall Spa Town.

Three Wood Division Three: Woodhall Spa Town B 4, Donington 8; Wyberton 4, Sibsey C 8; Sleaford Road 2, West Skirbeck 10; Kirton B 12, West End C 0 (here Ray Woods again secured a big win of 37-3).

Results sheets missing for week two are West End B v Sleaford Road in Two Wood Division One; West End B v Stickney in Three Wood Division Two; West End C v Sleaford Road in Three Wood Division Four and Donington v Wyberton in Three Wood Division Four. Spot the common factor!

Highlights from the week 2 results are:

Burton House 12, Kirton A 0 in Two Wood Division One. Three rinks were close but Ken Porter posted a 37-9 result. There was a big win away for Freiston 12-0 against Kirton B in Two Wood Division Three with big wins on all rinks. Wyberton 4, BBC I 8 was the scoreline in Three Wood Division One. A 57-58 win secured the aggregate points for BBC. The J West, A West, S Whyers combination won 26-7 for BBC, a result that was nearly balanced by A Tomlin, D Heron and M Tomlin senior with a 20-3 scoreline. Mareham playing at home missed out by two shots against Sibsey B in Three Wood Division Three losing 4-8 on points and by just 71 to 73 on shots. In Three Wood Division Four, John Stevens’ rink scored 54 shots in their game against Woodhall Spa Town B. As I write this on Tuesday (May 29), a number of two wood and three wood matches have been reported as postponed. Attention is duly drawn to rules 14, 15 and 16, but I am sure goodwill and common sense will prevail.

Round-up for week ending May 6

All systems go for new campaign

The 2007 season of the Boston and District Bowls League starts with matches in the week beginning May 14, although a few matches will be played the previous week.

It is a season of changes. This is my first season as match secretary, and I would like to thank my predecessor Derek Grainger for the hard work, accuracy, fairness and good humour that typified his service to the league.

The structure of the leagues has altered to give divisions of eight teams. The length of the season drops from 18 weeks to 14, and the number of matches played from 16 to 14.

There will be no bye weeks or double weeks, and hopefully the shorter season will enable the fixtures to be completed in good time.

The deadline for player registrations has passed and I would like to thank the majority of teams who have returned the forms. I still await returns from Kirton, Swineshead and Wyberton. Please ensure that I have these before any fixtures are played to avoid playing unregistered players.

I will make no predictions about who will win leagues and who will be relegated. All will become clear as the season progresses. I will report again after a few results are in. The remainder of the committee and I wish all teams a harmonious and enjoyable season.
