Gold Tops in form as ‘country’ season opens
A total of 20 distance runners from Boston and District
Athletic Club travelled to Wickstead Park in Northamptonshire for the first
of the 2007-2008 season’s North Midlands Cross-Country League fixtures. The
course near Kettering proved a good one with plenty of uphill sections and
the weather was warm, dry and bright, providing ideal conditions for the
opening league event.
The best performance on the day was by Alice Flint who ran an excellent race
at under-13 girls level. She ran well over the testing terrain to claim
seventh place against some strong opposition. In the same race Ellie Boyson
finished 15th and Karlie Wright completed the scorers in 36th place. In the
youngest boys event, Harry Baxter led in the Gold Tops’ challengers, crossing
the finish line in 30th place. Nathan McClure was 37th just ahead of Joshua
Lefley in 38th, with Alex Goldspink claiming 41st position.
In the under-15 girls competition, Louise Rutt produced another good
performance, putting her recently acquired overall fitness to good use. She
maintained good momentum to finish in 21st place. Improving all the time is
Melanie Bristow and she managed to claim a promising 36th position.
In the under-15 boys race, Jeremy Baily experienced a setback when he was in
the leading bunch, only to be part of the race pack that was misdirected by
course officials. Following 100m completed off course, the group returned to
the correct route for Jeremy to claim 20th position — a promising result
considering the deviation. Aidan McClure suffered no such handicap and
finished just 10 seconds behind Jeremy in 22nd place and Alex Pycock in 31st
took the opportunity to get in some valuable fitness training.
Three under-17 men finished in fairly close contention. Stephan Brockett was
28th, Aston Perrin 32nd and Josh Goodfellow 34th. In the senior, junior,
veteran men's contest, Owen Msimango was 113th with Karl Wright 129th
out-sprinting Peter Flint, 130th, into the finish funnel.
On Sunday October 28 the first of this season's Lincolnshire League fixtures
will be held at RAF Cranwell. The programme opens with the under-11 boys’ and
girls’ event at 11.50am with races for all age groups from under-13 boys and
girls up to seniors and veteran men and women following.
