Quartet of team awards netted by Boston schools
Boston schools athletics teams won four of the six team
awards at the Holland District Athletics Championships, an action schedule
that spanned eight hours of competitive track and field events and
disciplines.
Boston Grammar School were victorious in the junior boys
and intermediate boys age groups. Meanwhile, Boston High School landed the
spoils in the junior girls section and Boston College topped the table at
senior girls level. Three championship records were also broken and two
equalled on a day of changeable conditions that made life testing for
athletes to produce their best performance standards.
In terms of record bests, Haven High Technology College
pupil Jacob Axtell shattered the record in the junior boys’ 440m event. His
new championship best time of 55.3secs knocked almost a second off the
previous statistic. And Alex Pycock of Boston Grammar School sprinted his way
into the Holland District record book in the junior boys’ 200m final where he
recorded a time of 24.3 seconds, knocking 0.2 seconds off the previous
record.
Both record breakers were also involved in other events
in the junior boys’ section. Alex cleared 1.50m in the high jump to take
second place behind Haven’s Sam Young who also jumped 1.50m. Jacob achieved a
sprint double by adding 100m glory in 12.3 seconds to his aforementioned 200m
success.
Boston Grammar pupil Jeremy Baily also achieved a double by winning the 800m
in 2 mins 21.7 secs and the triple jump with a leap of 11.23m. Giles School’s
Andrew Hewitt won the district javelin title with 33.90m and Thomas Cowley
shot putter A Barnsley comfortably took his discipline’s title with a winning
distance of 11.2m. The BGS quartet took the 4 x 100m relay title in 51.0
seconds and finished with a total of 89 points ahead of runners-up Haven High
on 44 points with Spalding GS third in 42 points.
In the junior girls’ section, Boston High School provided five district
champions. Ellis Whyler won the 75m hurdles final, recording 12.7 seconds and
also took the high jump title with a leap of 1.46m. A throw of 22.18m earned
Andrea Jackson the javelin title and Louise Rutt achieved a decisive victory
in the 1,500m event by registering a time of 5:42.4. Jasmine Orrey’s leap of
4.41m gave her the long jump title. Two Giles students won district titles
with L Trevor winning shot with 7.86m and S Stanhope the discus with 21.98m.
In the team championship, Boston High School totalled 82 points with
runners-up Spalding High gaining 68. Giles finished in third place with a
total of 20 points.
By virtue of their success in winning the intermediate boys championship,
Boston Grammar School provided six district champions. Jake Mason secured a
treble with wins in 100m hurdles (14.8 seconds), high jump (1.90m) and long
jump (5.81m). Mark Tebbs recorded a time of 5:33.5 in winning the 1,500m
steeplechase. A Beck won the 100m with 12.1seconds. Giles Farell of Thomas
Cowley took the 800m title in 2:12.8 and the relay final was won by the BGS
squad in 48.8 seconds.
Behind Boston Grammar School on 96 points were George Farmer with 79 and
Spalding Grammar with 45.
Competition in the intermediate girls category was much closer with Spalding
High School the winners on 51 points. George Farmer came second with 46 while
Haven High were third with 41.
For Giles School, Hannah Boyes took two titles by virtue of winning the 80m
hurdles in 13.7 seconds and the 200m in 28.4 seconds. The Old Leake school
also had N East emerging victorious the 1,500m while S Newark of Thomas
Cowley School won the triple jump title with a leap of 8.62m. Haven High’s
Emily Richardson cleared 1.35m in winning the high jump and Rochelle Parkes
took the hammer title with a 16.62m throw. In the 100m sprint, L. Lambley, of
Thomas Cowley, finished first in a time of 14.2 seconds.
In the senior boys age group, Boston Grammar School runners dominated the
middle distance events. James Munn won the 800m in 2:10.9, the 1,500 metres
in 4:27.1 and the 3,000m in 9:44.0. Liam Mundt recorded a time of 55.2 seconds
to win the 400m and Mark Bridges won the long jump in 6.07m and the triple
jump in 12.12m. Giles School had L Beeson winning the 2,000m steeplechase
with a time of 7:33.8 and S Dugg of Boston High School won the pole vault. Sheroden
Goodhand, of Boston College threw 38.62m to win javelin. The college team also
had two other district champions in Jamie Stevens who won the 110m hurdles in
16.7 seconds and L Tenant who won the 400m hurdles in 68.3 seconds. Boston
High School's Stuart Smith won discus with 41.30m and the hammer with 32.31m.
Spalding Grammar won the senior boys’ trophy with 122 points ahead of Boston
GS with 83 and Boston College with 78.
In the senior girls’ competition Boston College achieved 81 points, Giles
came second with 48 and Spalding High third on 42.
The College’s Natasha Frolich won the 800m in 2:48.1 and 1,500m in 5:31.7. The
sprint titles went to Lauren West, of Boston High School, who won the 100m in
14.3 seconds and Hayley Pycock, of Giles, who won the 200m in 31.00 seconds. Natalie
Grimer, of Boston High, achieved a double winning pole vault with 2.10m and
long jump with 4.03m. Vicky Odling, of Giles, cleared 1.40m to win the high
jump title and Boston High School won the relay in 57.9.
Teams have been selected to represent Holland District at the Lincolnshire
Schools championships at Grantham on June 9. Athletes will be trying to
achieve English Schools Athletics Association track and field championships
entry standards at the county event, although qualification is not guaranteed
because Lincolnshire is limited to the size of the team for the ESAA
championships at Birmingham on July 13 and 14.

Gold medals galore for Gold Tops
A total of 48 county champion medals now rest with Boston
and District Athletic Club. This feat was achieved in the Lincolnshire
championships at Grantham. In addition Boston
competitors also weighed in with 31 silver awards awards and 19 bronze
medals.
It all added up to a tremendous display by the Boston
camp. And among the successes were two under-13 Gold Tops winning their first
Lincolnshire championship titles
— Bradley Wilson in the 75m hurdles (recording 15.5 seconds) and Nathan
McClure in the long jump with a 4.25m leap.
There were 10 title winners in the under-15 boys’ age
group. Alex Pycock was double sprint champion taking the 100m in 12.1 seconds
and the 200m in 24.0 seconds. Peter Spencer also clinched two county titles,
winning the 80m hurdles in a championship record time of 12.0 seconds and the
shot with a best putt of 10.18m.
Jumper Sam Young added another double in long jump with 5.17m and high jump
with 1.72m. A personal best hammer effort of 32.39m earned Haden Brittain his
first county championship title. Jeremy Baily won the long jump championship
with a leap of 11.52m and both the BADAC 4 x 100m relay squad and the 4 x
400m quartet added gold awards in the under-15 boys’ age group.
In the longest race in the under-15 girls age group, Louise Rutt won the
3,000m title. Ellis Whyler achieved a double, winning the high jump title
with a leap of 1.48m and clearing 4.72m in long jump for a second gold award.
In the throws, Jade Mason took the hammer title in convincing fashion with
34.15m and also won the discus title with
19.00m. A 23.78m javelin throw by Melanie Bristow earned her a first
county championship title.
In the under-17 men’s section, combined event ace Jake Mason achieved a
splendid treble. He won the 100m hurdles final in 14.8 seconds and added both
the high jump and long jump titles to his 2007 tally. Jake's clearance of
1.90m gave him the high jump championship record.
Sprinter Shamon Aloy Langham secured a great double, winning the 100m in 11.6
and the 200 metres in 24.0 despite the wet and windy conditions on day two of
the championships. In the triple jump competition, Chris Bloom took the title
with a leap of 12.32m and Jake Brittain made it a clean sweep of under-17
men’s jumps titles for BADAC members when he won the pole vault, clearing
2.10m.
Four under-17 ladies won their events. Isabelle Whitehead won the triple jump
title with 9.51m and Emily Richardson cleared 1.40m to take the high jump
championship. A 21.93m discus effort earned Rochelle Parkes the discus gold
award and Steph Hendy took the hammer title with 24.69m.
In the under-20 men’s category, Leon Pycock won the 100m title recording 11.7
seconds and Simon Robinson claimed the 400m hurdles gold in a time of 60.0
seconds. Elsewhere, Mark Bridges claimed a jumping double with a 6.26m in the
long jump and 12.19m in the triple jump. Stuart Smith went one better in the
throws achieving an impressive treble. He won discus with 36.36m, shot with
10.36m and hammer with 31.30m.
At senior level, Julia White recorded 12.7 to win the 100m title and Julia
Moore won the 400m event. Gold Tops captain Jodie Favell added four more Lincolnshire
titles to her medals haul winning 100m hurdles in 16.5 seconds, 400m hurdles
in 66.02 seconds, long jump with a leap of 4.81m and javelin with 31.51m.
Owen Msimango took the 3,000m senior men’s steeplechase gold award in 12.35.4
and Wayne Clarke exceeded 50m in the hammer to win with 50.84m.
In the veteran men’s championships, Tim Creese achieved a throws treble
winning discus with 29.23m, shot with 9.05m and javelin with 40.79m. Tonya
Robinson secured the veteran ladies’ hammer title with a throw of 28.93m.
Good performances from Joshua
Boston and
District AC disability Cerebral Palsy Class 35 representative Joshua
Goodfellow featured in the Cerebral Palsy Grand Prix at Nottingham.
In the 60m sprint he recorded 10.9 seconds to finish in a good second place.
Josh also competed in the 100m recording 18.2 seconds and 200m recording
35.7secs crossing the finish line in fourth position in both events. His next
competition will be in Manchester
in the near future.
County trophies for club duo
Boston Athletic Club members Jade Mason and Jeremy Baily
have received Lincolnshire
trophies marking their all-round athletics achievements at under-15 level
during the 2006 track and field season and the 2006-7 indoor and
cross-country season. Awarded to the Lincolnshire-born under-15 girl the
Pateman Trophy was presented to Jade at last the county championships.
During 2006 Jade was ranked fourth in the UK
athletics in her age group for the hammer with a best performance of 41.23m.
She also competed over 60m indoors and recorded times in Lincs League 200m
and 800m competitions as well as discus, javelin and shot.
In the cross-country season Jade also contested three Lincs League races and
competed in Lincolnshire sportshall athletics events. Jeremy Baily was
awarded the Tommy Clay Trophy for his all-round performances last year.

Week ending May 13
Top match accolades for Alex and Peter
Junior members of Boston and District Athletic Club
scooped two athlete-of-the-match awards at the first of this season’s
national young athletes league matches held at Wakefield. The first of the
duo who secured the accolades was Alex Pycock who took the under-15s field
man-of-the-match award for his high jump performance, leaping a personal best
of 1.72m. Meanwhile, Peter Spencer was awarded the track accolade in the same
age group for his comprehensive 100m hurdles victory in 12.1 seconds.
Despite some excellent performances the Boston squad contingent (Gold Tops)
lacked numbers at under-13 level and finished fourth with 140 points. Host
club Wakefield finished first with a match-winning points score of 245, well
clear of Harrogate’s total of 191 and Bingley’s score of 190 in third place.
For the Gold Tops at under-17 level, team members turned in an excellent team
performance. Supporting each other across the range of track and field
events, BADAC were prominent. Jake Brittain cleared 2.50m in the pole vault
competition held indoors and also recorded 68.6 in the 400m and 2.42.2 over
800m. Jake Mason won the high jump with 1.90m, cleared 6.32m in the long jump
and recorded 14.6 in the 100m hurdles. Chris Bloom in his first outing in
2007 achieved 6.26m in long jump, 12.28m in triple jump and 20.36m in
javelin. In the 200m Shamen Aloy Langham recorded 23.7 and Stephan Brockett
was timed at 29.5 in the B race. Stephan also recorded 60.06 for 400m and
29.5 for 200m. In the 100m Shamen looked sharp clocking 11.6. Michael
Robinson recorded 64.1 for 400m hurdles and performed well in the 100m
hurdles and both relays. Hammer, discus and shot performances from George
Wood added valuable points to the BADAC total and both 4x100m and 4x400m
relay teams ran well at the end of a busy weekend of track and field
activities.
In the under-17 ladies section, five representatives made their mark for
BADAC. Rachel Holland recorded 54.1 for 300m hurdles and 14.0 for 80m hurdles
and ran well in the 200m and relay. Hannah Boyes cleared 1.40m in high jump
recorded 13.9 over 100m and added value in shot. Emily Richardson won the
javelin with 29.88m, cleared 1.35m in the high jump and contributed well in
the 4x100m contest. Rochelle Parkes improved to 19.00m in hammer, 18.62m in
discus and 7.34m in triple jump. Stephanie Hendy recorded 27.20m in hammer
and added points in discus and relay.
Four under-15 girls covered the range of track and field events to the best
of their ability. Ellis Whyler recorded 13.0 for 75m hurdles in blustery
conditions and cleared 4.64m in the long jump. Melanie Bristow ran 13.5 in
the B 75m hurdles and also added points in long jump with 3.89m and the
javelin. Chelsea Brockett ran 200m in 29.6, 800m in 2.35.7 and also competed
in the high jump. Jade Mason joined the other three Gold Tops for an
encouraging 4x100m relay performance in addition to discus, with a throw of
18.20m, and shot. For the boys, in addition to an outstanding high jump
victory, Alex Pycock impressed in the 100m with 11.9, 200m with 24.1secs and
in his relay leg. By the same token Peter Spencer performed well in his two,
throwing events, javelin and shot, and in the relay. There was good support
from Aidan McClure in high jump and 1,500m and Jake Clare in long jump and
400m, with 64.2. Ben Clarke competed in javelin and recorded 13.2 in the B
100m. In the throws, Haden Brittain recorded a new personal best in hammer
with 20.70m and also contributed points in discus and shot. In the 400m
Jeremy Baily recorded 62.2 and competed well in long jump. A combination of
Alex Pycock, Peter Spencer, Ben Clarke and Jake Clare ran well in the 4x100m
challenge.
Elsewhere, two under-13 girls both produced valuable
points. Alice Flint recorded 26.2 for 150m and 4.41.6 for 1,200m. Karlie
Wright clocked 19.9 for 70m hurdles and added value with a shot of 4.77m. For
the boys in the same age group, Harry Baxter performed well in his full quota
of events competing in 200m, 1,500m and long jump contests.
BADAC officials will be hoping to draw on more team resources, particularly
with increased numbers of participants at under-13 level for the second match
in the series at Darlington on Sunday May 20.

Treble success for Boston youngsters
Boston-area athletes won three of the four categories at
the Holland District Schools combined events championships. Boston High
School youngster Ellis Whyler won the under-15 girls’ pentathlon and Boston
Grammar School representatives Jake Mason (under-17 boys octathlon) and Alex
Pycock (under-15 boys pentathlon) secured glory in their respective
championships. Meanwhile, Hannah Boyes (Giles School) was runner-up in the
under-17 girls heptathlon.
With regard to Ellis’ feat at under-15 level, she opened her pentathlon with
a 12.8 seconds victory over 75m hurdles for a score of 588 points on the
international scoring tables. A 7.51m shot putt added 368 points ahead of a
1.40m clearance at high jump for another 512 points. A leap of 4.66m (469) in
long jump was followed by a time of 3 minutes 01.04 seconds for 800 metres. A
total of 2,293 points gave Ellis the district title.
Thomas Cowley School’s Melanie Bristow finished fourth with 1,379 points
achieved through a 75m hurdles time of 13.13; shot of 6.82m; high jump of
1.25m; long jump of 4.23m; and 800m time of 3.20.88. Boston High School’s
Ashleigh Frankish scored 1,706 points and came fifth, Jasmine Orrey came
eighth with 1,555 points and Wednesday Pywowariw was ninth with 1,489 points.
In the under-15 boys pentathlon, Alex Pycock scored a total of 2,302 points
finishing some 240 ahead of the second placed athlete when he recorded 12.34
secs for 80m hurdles for a great 639 points start. In the shot putt event he
managed 9.59m, adding 461 points, and a high jump of 1.65m contributed
another 504 points. His long jump was 4.84m (352 points) and he finished with
an 800m time of 2.28 (346).
Haven High Technology College representative S Young claimed third place with
1,861 points gained through an 80m hurdles time of 13.24; shot put of 10.06m;
high jump of 1.50m; long jump of 4.80m and 800m time of 2.55. 00. Giles
School’s Andrew Hewitt was fourth when recording an 80m hurdles time of
15.00; shot put of 10.34m; high jump of 1.40m; long jump of 4.85m and 800m time
of 2.35 for a total of 1,838 points. Jeremy Barley, of Boston Grammar School,
was fifth with 1,688 points. D Garcia, of Haven High, sixth with 1,598
points, and Travis Cross, from Thomas Cowley, seventh with 1,546 points.
The first two competitions in the under-17 boys’ octathlon achieved a points
total in excess of 4,000 points. Jake Mason, from Boston Grammar, took the
district title with 4,329 points ahead of Middlecott’s Sean Band who finished
with 4,275 points. In the long jump, the first event on day one, Jake’s best
effort was measured at 6.16m (621) and he followed this with a 32.22m (508)
discus throw. In the javelin he recorded 34.98m (370) before ending the first
day programme with a 400m time of 55.44 (573). Leading by 40 points at the
start of day two, Jake completed the 100m hurdles in 14.57 seconds (708) and
cleared 1.90m (714) in high jump. His shot putt was 11.79m (595) and he
completed the octathlon running the 1,500m in 6.08 (240) to claim the title.
In second place, Sean Band opened with a 5.85m long jump (554) went on to
throw the discus 29.49m and had a 400m time of 58.88secs (519).
On the second day, Sean recorded 14.98 for the 100m hurdles, 1.80m in the
high jump, 13.81m in the shot and finally ran the 1,500m in 6.07 for second
place. Thomas Cowley’s Giles Favell finished in fourth position with 2,790
points achieved through a long jump of 4.60m, discus throw of 19.12m, javelin
throw of 26.90m; 400m time of 56.80; 100m hurdles time of 21.32 and high jump
of 1.40m; shot 7.59m; 1,500m 4.48. Mark Tebbs, from Boston Grammar, was
finished in fifth place with a total of 2,761 points. His performances were
long jump of 4.79m; discus throw of 23.16m; javelin throw of 32.79m; 400m
time of 61.21; 100m hurdles time of 21.58; high jump of 1.45m; shot of 8.70m
and 1,500m time of 5.15. Thomas Cowley’s Stephan Brockett claimed seventh
place with 2,684 points, Shaun Scott was eighth and Giles School's Danny
Morris came ninth.
In the under-17 girls heptathlon, Giles School represntative Hannah Boyes achieved
2,902 points for second place. She opened with a time of 14.45 seconds (521)
for 80m hurdles and then cleared 1.40m (512) in high jump before shot putting
7.61m (374). Finishing day one with a 200m time of 28.75 (551) she was lying
in runners-up spot. Her long jump of 4.23m (362) and javelin throw measured
at 14.06m (179) preceded the final event where she ran the 800m in 2.56
(403). Middlecott School’s Rachel Holland was fourth with 2,829 points
through an 80m hurdles time of 13.10; high jump of 1.30m (409); shot of 6.05m
(274); 200m time of 29.35 (508); long jump of 4.29m (376); javelin throw of
17.09m (234) and 800m time of 3.00 (365). Kirton School team-mate Lucy
Brentnall was fifth with 2,691 points through an 80m hurdles time of 13.90;
high jump of 1.25m; shot of 7.63m; 200m time of 30.11; long jump of 4.34m;
javelin throw of 25.42m; and 800m time of 3.28.
Holland Schools representatives now go forward to represent the district at
the Lincolnshire Combined Championships at the Princess Royal Sports Arena on
Friday May 18 and Saturday May 19. The junior girls and boys pentathlons are
on the Saturday first event at 10am.
