A number of local athletes were included in the Lincolnshire team that finished in their highest ever position in the Eastern AA Hibbard Trophy match at Sandy. For much of the meeting Lincolnshire were challenging for the lead with Norfolk and only just failed to take the trophy losing out by 14 points.

Simon Robinson had a busy day in Lincolnshire colours. He finished second in the 400 metres sprint recording 54.3secs in bright but blustery conditions. Simon added three third places in 400m hurdles 59.4secs, high jump 1.65m and 110m hurdles 18.4secs before contributing to Lincs 4x400m relay second position. Chris Bloom was second in triple jump clearing 12.55m and second in the B long jump leaping 5.88m. A vault of 2.20m earned Lincs valuable points for Natalie Grimer and Emily Richardson adjusted well in javelin 29.04m when a strong crosswind made throwing difficult. Elly Jackson was fifth in hammer throwing 34.32m and also putt the shot 7.46m. Sprinter Lauren West recorded 13.7secs for sixth position in the 100 metres.

In the under-17 men’s inter-county event for the Peterhouse Trophy a number of local youngsters represented Lincolnshire. There is a break in BADAC training sessions starting this week. Winter training sessions will start on Monday October 2 from 7pm to 9pm in the indoor training area at the Princess Royal Sports Arena. Training will then be every Monday and Wednesday evening 7pm to 9pm through to April 2007.

Week ending Sunday September 3

Boston and District Athletic Club's hopes of securing promotion to the North of England League Division One were dashed on Saturday. Torrential rain caused the play-off meeting to be abandoned. Only three field events had taken place before the appalling weather conditions made the track surface unsafe. And with the strong wind and heavy rain continuing to drive across the Cleckheaton stadium, the match referees abandoned the competition.

The Gold Tops now have to wait for the league officials to arrive at a decision regarding which club will be invited to compete in Division One in 2007. The expectation is that a “paper match” will take place based on the best league 2006 performances of the competitors declared by the seven competing teams on Saturday. Boston and District AC officials do not anticipate the promotion decision to be circulated for a few days.

The first ultra-distance running event to be staged at the Princess Royal Sports Arena was held at the weekend.
At 6pm on Saturday evening 16 competitors from all parts of the country embarked on a 12-hour endurance race with one contesting a six-hour challenge at the Tommy Clay track. Athletes from as far afield as Devon, Ken, Sussex, Nottingham, Warwick and South Wales travelled to the Finnforest Athletics Arena for the first event of its kind in the Boston area.

Finishing at midnight on Saturday/Sunday, Pamela Storey from Copthorne in West Sussex, achieved a distance of 28 miles 890 yards in the six hour period. Running throughout the night eight competitors completed the full 12 hours with Glyn Morris from Graves End in Kent, taking the Vivaldi Trophy travelling a total of 70 miles and 1,199 yards around the 400 metre track. Second was David Bowker from Royston, Herts who achieved 66 miles and 869 yards with Sid Morrison from Herne Bay, Kent running 62 miles 1,200 yards for third place.

Highest placed finisher was Jane Riley from Gedling, Nottingham in fourth place with a run of 54 miles and 29 yards ahead of Gilbert John from Copthorne, West Sussex on 51 miles 1,607 yards. Second female finisher was Selina Da Silva of Newton Abbot, Devon with a distance of 51 miles 889 yards. Craig Gilkes of Coventry covered 50 miles 618 yards and Mark Green of Faversham in Kent completed 49 miles 591 yards in his 12 hour
run.

With contestants expressing their satisfaction with the facilities and the arrangements for the first ultra event at the Princess Royal Sports Arena, there is a demand for Boston and District AC to arrange other long distance events in the future. A number of local senior athletes assisted Lincolnshire to an encouraging second place in the Eastern AA Hibbard Trophy Inter-Counties match at Sandy in Bedfordshire on Sunday. Full details will be published in next week's paper.

This Saturday (September 9), under-13 and under-15 track and field representatives are included in the Lincolnshire team, for the annual seven counties match at Derby’s Moorways Stadium.
