Week ending Sunday October 30: Boston and District Athletic Club laid on a testing
course for the runners at Sunday’s Lincolnshire League cross-country match at
Skegness. A mixture of sand dunes, grass and beach provided an energy sapping
track and the strong southerly wind made the going particularly hard. In the senior, junior, veteran men’s race over 9,390
metres Chris Cope showed good form, finishing in third place. Starting well, Chris maintained good rhythm over the
varied surface and came through strongly over the fourth and final lap of the
contest. Second counter for Boston and District AC was Dave Tilley who was
13th with Paul Green in 15th place competing the a team. Behind the team counters were Jack Albrow 28th, Steve
Hubbard 38th, Peter Flint 43rd and Karl Wright 51st. In the senior, junior, veteran women’s event Stephanie
Fleming returned to competitive athletics with a good eighth position. At the
end of the 5,548 metres. Jodie Favell was two places behind Stephanie in 10th
position. Over the same course in the under-17 men’s category Chris Cooper
responded really well to the demanding conditions crossing the line strongly
in fifth place. Mark Bridges supported Chris well completing the
distance in ninth position. In the under-17 women’s event Emily Moss looked
strong over 4,084 metres entering the finish funnel in an excellent fourth
position. Over the same 4,084m course four Gold Tops registered
good performances. Mark Tebbs led the quartet in 10th place with Jake Mason
16th, Aston Perrin 21st and Josh Goodfellow 24th in his first cross-country
competition. The under-15 girls competed over 3,136 metres with Emma
Buttery the first home in 11th and Sophie Grayson 15th and Danielle Ballam
19th. The under-13 boys and the girls raced over 2,299 metres.
Aiden McClure led in the Gold Tops finishing 10th in the boys contest. Ben
Thomas improving with each race was 16th with Robin Perrin 17th and Jake
Clare 22nd. In the girls event Louise Rutt ran strongly on a
difficult course to claim a good eighth place with Chelsea Ironmonger ninth
and Wednesday Pywowariw 14th for an encouraging team performance. In the combined under-11 run over 1,351 metres Alice
Flint was first to finish crossing the line in 10th place. Nathan McClure was
in 14th position with Karlie Wright 24th and Maria Hollingsworth 27th. On
Saturday November 5 Boston and District AC distance runners travel to Heanor
for the second of this season’s North Midlands League challenges. |

Week ending Sunday October 23: Eleven Boston
and District AC distance runners competed in the first of this season’s North
Midlands Cross-Country League match at Derby. Shaun North finished 13th in
the senior men’s race at Markeaton Park recording 35min 33secs, some two
minutes 40 seconds behind the event winner. In the senior women’s contest
Jodie Favell, using the distance test to increase her strength and stamina
for the track and field season, crossed the finish line in 74th position. Two
under-17 men lined up at the start of their competition with James Munn
completing the testing course in 15th place and Chris Cooper 23rd in his
first North Midlands encounter. In a shortened under-15 boys race Mark Tebbs
was 30th and Aston Perrin 49th. The under-13 boys team was in seventh place
with 76 points. Leading the Gold Tops home on this occasion was Craig Melvin
18th with Aidan McClure in his league debut an encouraging 13 seconds behind
in 24th. There was good support from Finn Lewis 34th, Jeremy Baily 38th and
Robin Perrin 55th. In the
second of this season’s Fenland Schools Cross-Country League events at
Peterborough, runners from Boston schools featured. With
103 finishers in the junior girls race, Boston High School’s Ashleigh
Frankish improved to finish in a fine second place. After her third place in
the first match in the series, Ashleigh began well at Peterborough and
maintained her pace to claim runners-up position. Behind Ashleigh, Louise
Rutt moved up from 10th in the first match to cross the finish line in a good
10th place. Third team counter was Chelsea Ironmonger 16th with Kerry Swift
19th and Heather Guy 23rd. In a big field there was excellent support from
Wednesday Pywowariw 29th, Andrea Jackson 44th, Jessica Murfin 64th, Natasha
Elwood 72nd, Kathryn Pomfret 73rd and Rebecca Bowry 77th. Lying in second
team place before the second race in the series the Boston High Year 7 and 8
runners will be hoping to maintain their place near the top of the table. Three
under-16 Boston HS runners featured with Danielle Frankish improving from 24th
in the first league match to a good 15th in the second event in the series.
Kristina Blazkova was close behind in 17th position and Chloe Turner in 37th
place with 64 runners completing the distance. Nine Boston Grammar School
under-13 runners arrived after the start of their league race and had a run
out over the course later in the programme. Craig
Melvin headed the squad with Aidan McClure in second spot. Richard Reed was
next ahead of Jeremy Baily, Finn Lewis and Ben Thomas. In support were Robin Perrin,
Kyle Rogers and Oscar Griffin. In the under-15 event Aston Perrin improve
from 134th in the first match to 13th at Peterborough. Daniel Jacklin was
slow off the mark but improved to finish in 35th position. |

Week ending Sunday October 16: Boston High School under-14 cross-country team has
qualified for the regional final of the English Schools Athletic Association
Cross-Country Cup competition. The Year 7 and 8 runners earned their place in the
regional event by finishing third in the first round event at Melton Mowbray. Up against 10 other schools from Nottingham, Derbyshire
and Leicestershire as well as south Lincolnshire the BHS girls scored 60
points to claim third team place and now progress to the regional event in
Derby on November 12. First finisher at Melton Country Park was Ashleigh
Frankish who was eighth followed by Louise Rutt in 15th, Chelsea Ironmonger
17th and Kerry Swift 20th. There was good support from Heather Guy who was
34th. The Boston High under-16s team finished in eighth
position in their race. Kristina Blazkova 19th, Demi Topliss 22nd, Chloe
Turner 29th and Danielle Frankish were the team scorers in the intermediate
event for Year 9 and 10 runners. Boston Grammar School junior team finished
in fourth position just missing out on qualification for the regional
competition. A points total of 66 points was 21 behind third placed
Stamford school. The BGS Year 7 and 8 representatives packed well with Craig
Melvin 10th, Aiden McClure 11th and Richard Reed 13th leading the challenge. Jeremy Baily was 32nd, Ben Thomas 38th and Robin Perrin
50th to complete the team places. In the intermediate boys contest over four miles, the
BGS Year 9 and 10 runners finished mid-table in sixth place out of the 11
competing school teams. Spearheading the Boston GS challenge was Mark Tebbs who
crossed the finish line in ninth place. Second counter was Aston Perrin 25th
ahead of Joe Horniblow 30th and Nicky Jackson 33rd. There was good support
from Chris Wilkinson 38th and Daniel Jacklin 39th. Entries are now being taken for this year’s five mile
Poppy Run on Sunday November 13. There are events for younger runners with
the main senior event starting on the Tommy Clay track at the Princess Royal
Sports Arena at 11am. |

Week ending Sunday October 9: Boston and District AC senior men’s team finished second
in the Louth Open Cross-Country meeting. Running over 9,000 metres Shaun
North was fifth (32mins 33secs), Stuart Cragg was ninth (34.42) and Eddie
Enright 27th (39.59). At under-15 level Mark Tebbs was 10th, Aston Perrin
17th.Four under-13 runners claimed third team place behind Grimsby AC and
Beverley AC. Aiden McClure was ninth, Craig Melvin 11th, Ben Thomas 15th and
Robin Perrin 20th. In the ‘Ducks and Drakes’ 10-mile road race, Stuart
Cragg finished first in 59mins 23secs. Over five miles at the same event,
lady veteran Charlie Donald was third recording 47mins 37secs. In the first of this season’s Lincolnshire Cross-County
League matches at Louth’s London Road course, 16 Gold Tops opened their
2005-2006 league campaign. Six BADAC runners finished in single figure
positions over a testing course with some demanding climbs. At senior level
Shaun North led in five representatives claiming third place with Paul Green
second counter in 17th position. Steve Hubbard was 36th, David Johnson 40th
and Bob Whyler 57th. At under-17s women’s level Emily Moss was eighth and in
the men’s race Dean Fisher claimed seventh place with Chris Cooper 10th. Two under-15 boys opened their account at Lincolnshire
League level with Mark Tebbs in seventh position and Aston Perrin,
supporting, in 12th place. Half-a-dozen under-13 boys packed in well. Craig
Melvin headed the Boston and District AC challenge finishing strongly in
third place with Aiden McClure providing excellent support in fourth
position. Third counter was Finn Lewis 10th just ahead of Robin Perrin 11th
with Jake Clare 19th and Dylan Baker 20th. Boston High School’s Year 7 and 8 team are in second position
in the Fenland Schools Cross-Country League. After the first round at
Crowland the BHS girls have 31 points just behind leaders Bourne Grammar
School who have 27 points. With 31 teams taking part, BHS had their B team in
sixth position and the C team 18th. Boston Grammar Year 7 and 8 boys are in fourth place in
their league (91 points) behind Stamford Boys Arthur Mellows College and
Crowland (St Guthlacs). The junior boys’ B team are in 18th position. In the
Year 9 and 10 boys competition the BGS lads are in fifth spot behind Stamford
Boys, George Farmer, St Guthlacs A and Robert Manning Technology
College. |
