Week ending Sunday November 6:

The second of this season’s North Midlands Cross-Country League matches proved a testing time for competitors racing around the course at Shipley Country Park, Heanor in Derbyshire.

The park’s undulating terrain, created on the site of an old colliery spoil heap, was completely saturated following recent rains making the going particularly heavy. James Munn returned to form with a good seventh place in the under-17 men’s race. After his disappointing finish in the first match in the series James started in more restrained fashion and went on to produce a strong run over a tough course.

At senior level Shaun North also improved on his last North Midlands outing. Competing over three large demanding laps of Shipley Country Park Shaun set off behind the leaders on the first circuit and maintained good momentum on successive laps to secure 11th position.

In the senior women’s event Jodie Favell also had the satisfaction of improving on her finish place at Derby’s Markeaton Park event last month. Despite setting off a little too quickly on such a testing surface Jodie was determined to keep her rhythm and entered the finish funnel 15 places in advance of her Derby position.

Three under-15 boys finished in 12th team place with Mark Tebbs 29th, Aston Perrin 45th and Joshua Goodfellow a determined 46th.

The under-13 boys’ squad depleted on the day finished in ninth place to hold on to seventh league position after two events. Jeremy Baily was 27th, Aiden McClure 28th and Robin Perrin 37th. In only her second outing for Boston and District AC Danielle Ballam took on the tough challenge of the North Midlands League under-15 girls’ race.

It proved a steep learning curve for Danielle and she performed well at this level crossing the finish line in 44th place. Stuart Cragg recorded 1hour 19mins 0.4secs in the Worksop half marathon to finish in 31st place. There were 1,875 finishers in the event and Charlie Donald (2hrs 4mins 3secs) and Eddie Enright (2hrs 4mins 04secs) were in 1,474th and 1,475th position respectively.

The annual five-mile Poppy Run will be held on Sunday starting at the Princess Royal Sports Arena at 11am with entries already in excess of 100 runners for the main event. There is good support for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The junior races open the programme starting at 10am.

Boston High School junior girls’ cross-country team travel to Derby on Saturday for the regional finals of the English Schools AA Cup. Competition will be against 11 other Year 7 and 8 teams from Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and South Yorkshire. The BHS girls are contesting a place in the national final. The top three teams in the regional final progress to the 2005 ESAA Cup final at Leeds on December 3.
