Week ending Sunday May 7:

There was a moment of history for Boston and District Athletic Club made history on Saturday May 6 when the club had two club teams involved in the 2006 North of England Track and Field League. In order to give more opportunities to their up and coming athletes the Gold Tops have entered a B team in the league this year. And this side contested Division 4 EC with the A squad continuing their challenge in Division 2 EC.

On a historic day for BADAC both teams finished in an encouraging fourth place on their first outing of the North of England League season. Competing at Rotherham the A team were up against the host club (Rotherham), Barnsley, Chesterfield, Derby, Lincoln Wellington and Grantham and despite some notable absentees they were pushing for third place throughout the five-and-a-half-hour programme.

Captains Jodie Favell and Mark Bowler continued where they left off at the end of last season leading from the front. Mark was second over 400 metres hurdles in 59.3secs and led the field in the 110m sprint hurdles before making a maximum contribution to both 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Jodie won both 100m hurdles (16.5secs) and 400m hurdles (65.6secs) and added a second in javelin with a promising early season throw of 32.96m. She contributed additional points through pole vault (third 1.80m) and shot (sixth 8.82m). Jake Louth achieved an outstanding “triple” winning discus 39.88m, javelin 52.30m and shot 12.51m. He also marked his return to North of England competition with a good debut hammer effort recording 27.83m for a valuable fourth place.

In the B throws competitions Stuart Smith produced some remarkably good performances for a first year junior man. He claimed three B seconds in hammer 25.92m, discus 27.71m and shot 9.74m. In the women’s throws Stacey Worth finished fifth in discus 25.71m and threw an encouraging 19.34m for fourth in the B javelin and added a second in B long jump 4.44m before clearing a personal best 1.50m in high jump (B fourth). The sprinters opened their accounts well. Julia White won the 200 metres in 26.2secs and was just edged out of first place over 100 metres recording 12.6secs. “Ebbs” Eseonu was third in both short sprints, clocking 11.7secs for 100m and 23.8secs for 200m.

Julia Moore finished second in the 400 metres sprint in 62.3secs and added considerable value to the club points total in the B 400 hurdles, B shot and triple jump and recorded 28.4secs for third in the B 200 metres. Emily Moss won the B flat 400m in 61.3secs, finished second in triple jump 10.77m and fourth in long jump 4.87m. Mark Bridges illustrated his considerable progress made at senior level with a fine win in triple jump with 12.06m, a second in the B 100 metres 12.4secs and third in B 200 metres 24.9secs. Simon Robinson was first in the B 400m hurdles, fifth in the A 400 metres 57.8secs and cleared 1.65m for second in B high jump.

Making the transition to senior competition, Jake Mason cleared 1.85m for a high jump second and picked up B competition fourth places in javelin 31.38m and 400 metres 58.5secs. Paul Higham produced sterling performances over 800 metres (2mins 05.6secs), 1500 metres a good second in the A race (4mins 23.1secs) and 5000 metres sixth 17mins 20.0secs and Owen Msimango in 3000m steeplechase and 5000m B competition (20mins 17.9secs). John Haresign was second in the B 100m hurdles (17.4secs), fifth in pole vault (2.10m) and added points in the B 1500 metres. A leap of 11.74m gave Phil Peatling top place in the B triple jump with 5.55m in long jump, earning B second place and a clearance of 2.10m in pole vault a good third.

The men’s 4x100m quartet secured second place in 48.5secs with the women’s four crossing the line third in 52.0secs. At the end of the match with hosts Rotherham well out in front (440), the provisional points totals had Lincoln Wellington second on 399 with Barnsley 376 and Boston and District AC on 368 ahead of Chesterfield 340, Derby 238 and Grantham 237.

The Gold Tops a team will be looking to field a stronger team for the second match in the series at Barnsley on Saturday June 3.

The B team competed against City of Sheffield AC, Hallamshire Harriers, Kingston upon Hull, Grimsby Harriers and Wombwell Sporting AC at the Finnforest Athletics Arena.

Team manager Karl Wright rallied his young troops in their new venture and some enthusiastic teamwork produced a good league debut for the B team. Karl achieved a personal best shot putt of 9.03m for third place and won both the 400 metres hurdles A race in 70.6 and the 110m hurdles in 24.3secs. Although far from fully fit, Steve Ladds threw the 800g javelin 43.70m off a short run up to claim second place and Shaun North recorded 16mins 46.6secs in third place in the 5000 metres. Leon Pycock, recovering from injury, finished second in the 100 metres 11.9secs and fourth over 200 metres 24.3secs.

Returning to competitive athletics Geoff Knight opened with an excellent win in the 3000 metres steeplechase in 10mins 59.3secs, a time that would have placed him in the top four in the A team even in the Division Two match at Rotherham. Anna Lenton was a good second in the 100m hurdles race 18.1secs and achieved a third in shot with a putt of 7.75m and then anchored the 4x100m relay quartet to third place in 58.4secs. Emily Richardson was just shy of 30m in javelin, finishing in third position (29.90m) and added a B fourth in shot with 6.69m.

There was excellent support for the women’s tam from Isabelle Whitehead, Emma Buttery, Jessica Johnson, Sophie Grayson and Rochelle Parkes who all contributed well despite their inexperience. James Munn gained valuable points in 800 metres (fourth, 2mins 14.7secs), 1500 metres (fourth, 4mins 38.4secs) and helped out in high jump (1.40m). Matthew Harness was fourth in triple jump 10.69m and James Bexon won the B competition with 10.14m.

There was good support for the team effort from Peter Flint, Chris Cooper and Chris Chester, resulting in a provisional points total of 289. Kingston upon Hull were winners on 387 points with Hallamshire second 368.5 and City of Sheffield on 339 points. With Grimsby on 225 and Wombwell on 85.8 points, the Gold Tops’ inaugural Division 4 EC outcome was a really promising one. With their second match at Sheffield on June 3 the B squad will be hoping to go at least one place better.

On Saturday and Sunday May 13 and 14, local athletes entered in the county championships will be competing at the South Kesteven Stadium, Grantham. There is a full programme of track and field events for all age groups from under-13 boys and girls up to veteran men and women.

Local athletes featured in the 2006 Holland District Schools Combined Events Championships held at the Princess Royal Sports Arena. The Tommy Clay track proved an excellent venue for the district’s multi-eventers to test their abilities against stopwatch, tape measure and international scoring tables.

In the under-15 girls’ pentathlon, Boston High School’s Year 7 all-rounder Ellis Whyler was a clear winner despite giving away up to two years to fellow competitions. Opening with 14.51secs for 75 metres hurdles, a distance which required considerable adjustment from her more usual 70m events at under-13 level Ellis went on from strength to strength. A 6.92m shot putt followed by 1.39m in high jump put her in the driving seat. A 4.06m long jump extended her lead and despite a modest 3mins 12secs time for 800m she had more than a 250 point advantage over runner-up Hannah Boyes (Giles). The Giles’ multi-eventer had a good lead over third placed Ashleigh Frankish (Boston High School) who headed Charlotte Taylor (Spalding High School) in fourth place.

The boys under-15 pentathlon event produced another outstanding winner in Ben Maylor (Spalding Grammar School) in his last year in the junior age group. He had in excess of a 400 point lead at the end of the five disciplines. Boston Grammar School’s Alex Pycock was runner-up with 14.80secs for 80m hurdles 7.54m for shot, a 1.45m clearance in high jump, 4.41m in long jump and finally 2mins 34.73secs for 800 metres. Giles School’s D Morris was third.

In the under-17 girls’ heptathlon Emily Moss (Spalding High School) was an outstanding winner finishing with a points total in excess of 4,000 points. In the under-17 boys section the results suggest that the Holland team for the Lincolnshire Combined Events Championships will be serious contenders for the county team title. Middlecott’s Sean Band was first with 3,934 points achieved through a long jump of 5.74m, discus (38.98m), javelin (37.77m), 400 metres (59.54secs), 100m hurdles (16.7secs), high jump (1.75m), shot putt (12.55m) and 1,500 metres (6mins 16secs). Jake Mason (Boston Grammar) was second on 3,788 points: long jump 5.97m; discus 26.77m; javelin 37.10m; 400m 58.47secs; 100m hurdles 15.6secs; high jump 1.65m; shot 10.86m; 1,500m 6mins 15secs.

Holland teams have been selected to represent the district at the Lincolnshire Combined Events Championships at the Princess Royal Sports Arena on Friday May 19 (5pm) and Saturday May 20.
