On a more local tack, 14 young Boston athletes took part in the Lincolnshire sportshall athletics under-13 and under-15 team trials at Grantham on Sunday. Competing in a series of running, jumping and throwing events the young track and field contestants produced some good results.

At under-15 level combined events specialist Jake Mason was understandably the most successful Gold Top.

He won five events and added two fourths and a fifth during the five-hour programme of athletics activities.

Clearing 1.57m off a restricted run-up to win the high jump, Jake decided not to attempt a great height. In a close shot contest Jake achieved 11.41m for a narrow victory and won the vertical jump with 67cms. A standing long jump of 2.55m and a distance of 7.80m achieved in the standing triple jump completed his string of first places.

His best time for two laps was 24.4 seconds in the heat and for four laps he recorded 57.7 seconds. A speed bounce score of 62 put him in fifth position.

A much improved performer, Mark Tebbs, achieved four second places and a third at under-15 level. Aston Perrin claimed a pair of fifth places in shot 7.36m and the four laps 56.2secs and Oliver Grayson’s best positions were in high jump (1.25m) and shot (6.43m).

In the under-13 boys section Alex Pycock was Boston and District Athletic Club’s most outstanding performer. He achieved victories in three events, finish second in five contests and added a fourth in a further discipline.

A clearance of 1.46m won the high jump and a time of 25.3secs for two laps and 54.1secs for four laps also gained first places.

Completing six laps in 1min 34.1secs, Alex finished second and also achieved runners-up position in speed bounce (66), a standing long jump of 1.05m, standing triple jump of 6.64m and shot of 7.48m. A height of 49cms in vertical jump put Alex in fourth position to complete a successful day’s athletics.

In his first sportshall athletics competitive experience, Aiden McClure impressed. He excelled in the speed bounce winning the under-13 competition with a total of 66 bounces and added another victory over six laps, recording 1min 31.0secs. Over four laps he qualified for the final with a 54.8secs performance reducing this to 54.7 for second place in the final.

Additional performances were: high jump 1.26m, shot 5.31m, standing long jump 1.70m, standing triple jump 5.40m and vertical jump 43cms completing a successful day for Aidan.

On February 4, selected Lincolnshire Schools Cross-Country teams will contest the Anglian Counties Schools Championships in Northamptonshire.

Week ending Sunday January 22:

Holland District runners carried off one team championship and two individual titles at the Lincolnshire Schools Cross-Country Championships at Lincoln on Saturday. James Munn of Boston Grammar School was never headed in the under-17 boys’ event taking the county schools title with apparent ease. In wonderful winter sunshine, conditions for the championships were excellent and James established a good lead midway through the 5,700 metres contest and Maintained the advantage right through to the finish line. There was excellent team support and with their six counters finishing in the top 20 positions.

Holland secured an excellent victory. Rikki Heaviside (Spalding GS) was third and Alex Gibb (George Farmer) sixth for a splendid start in the team championships. The Holland lads were running confidently using all their experience gained over a range of testing terrain and making light work of the demanding South Common course. When Giles Favell (Thomas Cowley) crossed the line 10th ahead of Chris Cooper (Thomas Cowley) 19th and Mark Tebbs 20th the Holland team was home and dry, a points total of 59 gave the local boys a 20 point advantage over runners-up South East Lindsey (79) with Lincoln third on 104 points. In support of the half a dozen counters BGS Joseph Hornblow was 53rd and Cowley’s C Denton 55th.

Lloyd Kempson (Spalding GS) was clear winner of the under-13 boys’ race over 3,000 metres giving Holland a second individual title. Second finisher for the team was Middlecott’s J Loughran who improved from fifth in the district championships to 14th on Saturday. Aiden McClure (Boston GS) was third man home in 18th place and Cowley’s pair S Rodwell 27th and J Medlock 28th provided support. The Holland team was fifth.

In the under-13 girls’ 1,800 metres challenge Charlotte Taylor (Spalding High) ran well to claim third place. Second finisher for Holland was Rosie Manning (Spalding HS) 14th with Stephanie Beavis (Spalding HS) 20th and Vanessa Sacks (Spalding High) 21st. Boston High School’s Wendy Pywowariw was 24th, Sian Worthington 31st, Stephanie Smith 32nd and Abigail Tilley 40th helping Holland to fourth team position.

At under-15 boys’ level the Holland champion Tom Rodgers (Gleed Boys) again led the Holland contingent entering the finish in eighth place. Scott Forman (George Farmer) was 10th and Cowley’s Jake Brittain progress from eighth in the Holland race to an impressive 18th in the Lincolnshire event.

The Holland squad was fourth in the team results. First finisher for Holland in the under-15 girls race was Louise Rutt (Boston High) who claimed a promising ninth place. Ashleigh Frankish (Boston HS) was next home in 24th and school colleagues Chelsea Ironmonger 37th, Kerry Swift 45th and Chloe Turner 50th. Giles School’s Danielle Ballam was 58th and Rachel Holland (Middlecott) finished 57th with Holland in fifth team position.

Missing some key team members Holland struggled in the under-17 girls championship. Emily Moss (Spalding High) 12th was the only representative in the first 20 places. Emily Harpham (Spalding HS) 27th Natasha Frolick 28th and Nikki Forman 35th (both George Farmer) all contributed together with Daisy Cadle (Heaven), Jessica Johnson and Emma Buttery (both Cowley’s) with Holland sixth team.

Hit by illness and absentees the senior boys’ squad was decimated and Holland failed to field a scoring team. Stuart Smith (Boston High) 21st, Leon Pycock (Boston Grammar) 22nd and Jason Stevenson (Boston College) were unsupported.

In contrast, at senior girls’ level Holland produced a good team result and claimed runners-up place. Spearheading the local challenge was Lucy Nell (Spalding High) who ran well in third place. From the same school Nicola Barker was eighth and Boston College’s Laurie Edelberg third counter in 11th position, Natalie Grimer (Boston High) was 13th, Laura Rutland (Spalding HS) 14th and Boston College trio Louise Meacher (29th), Emma Watson (22nd) and Chloe Hewitt (23rd) completed the Holland representation. Teams will now be selected to represent Lincolnshire in both the Anglian Schools championships on February 4 and the English schools AA championships on March 25.

In the individual awards, James Lunn claimed runners-up position in the 4,7632 metres contest for under-17 men. Weather conditions were good with the underfoot situation sticky on the long up-hill section with muddy patches in the low portions of the course. James made good progress and held on to second place for a county silver award.

In the opening event on the programme an under-11 non-championship race Alice Flint secured an impressive victory. With just 100m of the 1,798 metres challenge remaining, Alice was in contention along with two other runners. Raising the tempo Alice sprinted into the finish funnel to beat the opposition and claim her first Lincolnshire win.

With a points total of 2,993 for the complete pentathlon Emily was only 31 points behind the North of England gold medallist. It’s an excellent start to her 2006 athletics career.

A small contingent of Boston and District Athletic Club distance runners opened the New Year with a trip to Sutton in Ashfield for the final North Midlands Cross-Country League match. On a demandingly wet, muddy and hilly course, the cold weather made the racing quite an ordeal.

In the senior, junior, veteran women’s event Jodie Favell was delighted with her 38th place at the end of her first season competing in the North Midlands League. Over the 2005-06 series Jodie has made good progress match by match and will certainly reap the rewards in the forthcoming track and field season.

In a lean cross-country period for the local club, two all-rounders have qualified for end of series awards. In the under-17 women’s category Emily Moss secured the runners-up silver award at the end of a good season over the country. With two fourth places and a second in the final three events in the series Emily claimed second league position.

In the senior women’s section, club captain Jodie Favell earned the bronze award finishing third overall despite competing in only three of the four events in the 2005-2006 series.

With the best three results in the series counting for the awards, Jodie had no margin for error and third, fifth and eighth placings have her third ranking.

Outside the top three a further trio of female Gold Tops are listed in the end of season rankings having finished a minimum of three Lincolnshire League races. Alice Flint is in fifth place and Maria Hollingsworth ninth in the under-11 category. At under-13 level Louise Rutt is also in ninth position.

There are no Boston and District male representatives in the top three positions this year.
