Week ending Sunday January 29: Boston and District SC sprinter Eberechi Eseonu
contested the North of England senior men’s 60 metres indoor sprint
championship at Sheffield on January 29. “Ebbs” progressed through the heats
to the final where he recorded 7.18secs for an encouraging sixth place. At the North of England indoor track and field
championships, Kirton End’s Bernice Wilson (Birchfield Harriers) compete in
both the senior women’s 60 metres and 200 metres championships. Qualifying
for the 60m sprint final, Bernice crossed the finish line in fifth position
in 7.88secs. In the 200 metres heats she won her race in a sharp 25.77secs to
qualify for a second final. In the final, Bernice came through well to finish in third place in
a time of 25.74 seconds. On a more local tack, 14 young Boston athletes took part
in the Lincolnshire sportshall athletics under-13 and under-15 team trials at
Grantham on Sunday. Competing in a series of running, jumping and throwing
events the young track and field contestants produced some good results. At under-15 level combined events specialist Jake Mason
was understandably the most successful Gold Top. He won five events and added two fourths and a fifth
during the five-hour programme of athletics activities. Clearing 1.57m off a restricted run-up to win the high
jump, Jake decided not to attempt a great height. In a close shot contest
Jake achieved 11.41m for a narrow victory and won the vertical jump with
67cms. A standing long jump of 2.55m and a distance of 7.80m achieved in the
standing triple jump completed his string of first places. His best time for two laps was 24.4 seconds in the heat
and for four laps he recorded 57.7 seconds. A speed bounce score of 62 put
him in fifth position. A much improved performer, Mark Tebbs, achieved four
second places and a third at under-15 level. His second positions were in the
four-lap event where he improved from 53.1secs in the heat to 51.4 secs in
the final; standing long jump 2.43m, vertical jump 66cms and speed bounce 76.
In the two laps final he crossed the finish line in third place in a time of
24.6secs. Mark added further three fourth places in high jump 1.39m, shot
8.37m and standing triple jump 7.02m. Rhys Cox had his share of success claiming a second
place and six thirds. His best placing was in the two-lap event where he
progressed from 25.5secs in the qualifying race to 24.0secs in runners up
position in the final. He was third in the four-lap final 52.0secs, the high
jump 1.48m, shot 8.53m, standing long jump 2.41m, standing triple jump 7.21m
and vertical jump 63cms. Jake Brittain gained a third place in speed bounce with
a score of 76 achieved in the 30 seconds time limit. He also achieved a fourth in the four-lap final in
52.7secs after a 55.2secs performance in the earlier heat and a fifth in
vertical jump with a score of 50cms. Aston Perrin claimed a pair of fifth places in shot 7.36m
and the four laps 56.2secs and Oliver Grayson’s best positions were in high
jump (1.25m) and shot (6.43m). In the under-13 boys section Alex Pycock was Boston and
District Athletic Club’s most outstanding performer. He achieved victories in
three events, finish second in five contests and added a fourth in a further
discipline. A clearance of 1.46m won the high jump and a time of
25.3secs for two laps and 54.1secs for four laps also gained first places. Completing six laps in 1min 34.1secs, Alex finished
second and also achieved runners-up position in speed bounce (66), a standing
long jump of 1.05m, standing triple jump of 6.64m and shot of 7.48m. A height
of 49cms in vertical jump put Alex in fourth position to complete a
successful day’s athletics. In his first sportshall athletics competitive
experience, Aiden McClure impressed. He excelled in the speed bounce winning
the under-13 competition with a total of 66 bounces and added another victory
over six laps, recording 1min 31.0secs. Over four laps he qualified for the
final with a 54.8secs performance reducing this to 54.7 for second place in
the final. Additional performances were: high jump 1.26m, shot
5.31m, standing long jump 1.70m, standing triple jump 5.40m and vertical jump
43cms completing a successful day for Aidan. Oliver Phillips relished the challenge of the sportshall
events gaining a second and three third places. He recorded 25.7secs in
runners-up position in the two-lap race and finished third over six laps
recording 1min 34.2secs. In the four-lap final Oliver secured another third
position in 58.7secs and scored 64 in the speed bounce for a further third.
He added fourth positions in high jump 1.29m, standing long jump 2.04m and
vertical jump 50cms and took fifth place in standing triple jump with 5.84m. A clearance of 1.32m earned Dylan Baker second place in
the under-13 high jump and 50cms achieved in vertical jump placed him third.
He also gained fourth positions in shot 6.69m and two laps 26.5secs. Jake Clare was third in shot with a putt of 6.70m. He
had respectable performances in two laps 27.9secs, standing long jump 1.78m,

place in speed bounce with a score of 62 and 5.08m in standing triple jump. Ozzy Griffin achieved two fifth positions in long jump
2.02m and high jump 1.26m and Robin Perrin produced consistent performances
in his eight competitions, showing progress made in running, jumping and
throwing. Following the trials at Grantham, Lincolnshire teams
will be selected for the East Midlands Sportshall Athletics Championships at
the Meres Leisure Centre on Sunday February 5. On February 4, selected Lincolnshire Schools
Cross-Country teams will contest the Anglian Counties Schools Championships
in Northamptonshire. |

Week ending Sunday January 22: Holland District runners carried off one team
championship and two individual titles at the Lincolnshire Schools Cross-Country
Championships at Lincoln on Saturday. James Munn of Boston Grammar School was
never headed in the under-17 boys’ event taking the county schools title with
apparent ease. In wonderful winter sunshine, conditions for the championships
were excellent and James established a good lead midway through the 5,700
metres contest and Maintained the advantage right through to the finish line.
There was excellent team support and with their six counters finishing in the
top 20 positions. Holland secured an excellent victory. Rikki Heaviside
(Spalding GS) was third and Alex Gibb (George Farmer) sixth for a splendid
start in the team championships. The Holland lads were running confidently
using all their experience gained over a range of testing terrain and making
light work of the demanding South Common course. When Giles Favell (Thomas
Cowley) crossed the line 10th ahead of Chris Cooper (Thomas Cowley) 19th and
Mark Tebbs 20th the Holland team was home and dry, a points total of 59 gave
the local boys a 20 point advantage over runners-up South East Lindsey (79)
with Lincoln third on 104 points. In support of the half a dozen counters BGS
Joseph Hornblow was 53rd and Cowley’s C Denton 55th. Lloyd Kempson (Spalding GS) was clear winner of the
under-13 boys’ race over 3,000 metres giving Holland a second individual
title. Second finisher for the team was Middlecott’s J Loughran who improved
from fifth in the district championships to 14th on Saturday. Aiden McClure
(Boston GS) was third man home in 18th place and Cowley’s pair S Rodwell 27th

Taylor (Spalding High) ran well to claim third place. Second finisher for
Holland was Rosie Manning (Spalding HS) 14th with Stephanie Beavis (Spalding
HS) 20th and Vanessa Sacks (Spalding High) 21st. Boston High School’s Wendy
Pywowariw was 24th, Sian Worthington 31st, Stephanie Smith 32nd and Abigail
Tilley 40th helping Holland to fourth team position. At under-15 boys’ level the Holland champion Tom Rodgers
(Gleed Boys) again led the Holland contingent entering the finish in eighth
place. Scott Forman (George Farmer) was 10th and Cowley’s Jake Brittain
progress from eighth in the Holland race to an impressive 18th in the
Lincolnshire event. The Holland squad was fourth in the team results. First
finisher for Holland in the under-15 girls race was Louise Rutt (Boston High)
who claimed a promising ninth place. Ashleigh Frankish (Boston HS) was next
home in 24th and school colleagues Chelsea Ironmonger 37th, Kerry Swift 45th
and Chloe Turner 50th. Giles School’s Danielle Ballam was 58th and Rachel
Holland (Middlecott) finished 57th with Holland in fifth team position. Missing some key team members Holland struggled in the
under-17 girls championship. Emily Moss (Spalding High) 12th was the only
representative in the first 20 places. Emily Harpham (Spalding HS) 27th
Natasha Frolick 28th and Nikki Forman 35th (both George Farmer) all
contributed together with Daisy Cadle (Heaven), Jessica Johnson and Emma
Buttery (both Cowley’s) with Holland sixth team. Hit by illness and absentees the senior boys’ squad was
decimated and Holland failed to field a scoring team. Stuart Smith (Boston
High) 21st, Leon Pycock (Boston Grammar) 22nd and Jason Stevenson (Boston
College) were unsupported. In contrast, at senior girls’ level Holland produced a
good team result and claimed runners-up place. Spearheading the local
challenge was Lucy Nell (Spalding High) who ran well in third place. From the
same school Nicola Barker was eighth and Boston College’s Laurie Edelberg
third counter in 11th position, Natalie Grimer (Boston High) was 13th, Laura
Rutland (Spalding HS) 14th and Boston College trio Louise Meacher (29th),
Emma Watson (22nd) and Chloe Hewitt (23rd) completed the Holland
representation. Teams will now be selected to represent Lincolnshire in both
the Anglian Schools championships on February 4 and the English schools AA
championships on March 25. * * * * * * Several track and field athletes took the opportunity to
test their 2006 form at the Keith Ward Annual Indoor Trophy meeting at King’s
Lynn on Sunday. In his first outing in the under-17 age group, Jake Mason
produced personal best performances. Despite a restricted run-up in the
confined space, he cleared 1.80m in the high jump for the first time,
finishing in third place. In his first 5kg shot competition, Jake made an
impressive start achieving just short of 11m. His best putt of 10.98m gave
him second place. In the 60m sprint, Jake progressed to the final with a time
of 8.0secs. James Bexon won the under-17 men’s long jump with an
encouraging 5.74m and cleared 1.75m for fourth place in high jump a leap of

60m sprint 8.7secs having completed a testing Lincolnshire Schools
cross-country contest for Holland on the South Common the previous day. Two
junior men set new personal bests. Simon Robinson was rewarded for his
dedicated winter training when he added no less than seven centimetres to his
high jump PB. Despite enforced adjustments to his approach at King’s
Lynn Simon cleared 1.75m for second place. He qualified for the 60m sprint
final running 7.8secs and then recorded 7.7secs for fifth place in the final
race. Mark Bridges was timed at 8.0secs over 60 metres and also won the
junior mens triple jump trophy with 11.80m. A long jump of 5.61m represented
a new best performance and an early season boost for Mark. Senior Phil
Peatling won the long jump winners award with 5.52m and added first place in
triple jump with 11.11m before recording 7.9secs for fifth position in the
60m sprint. At under-13 girls’ level Ellis Whyler claimed three
personal bests. Her winning performances in both high jump 1.35m and shot
6.70m gave her new personal record marks. In addition, she was timed at
9.2secs for 60 metres for an excellent start to her 2006 season. In the under-15 girls’ short Jade Mason earned a third
place award with 7.25m and also measured her sprint speed over 60m. A number of under-15 boys competed in both track and
field events. Michael Robinson demonstrated his progress with victory in the

Championships silver medal to her tally at the weekend. Competing in the
under-17 women’s triple jump championship at Sheffield on Sunday, Emily
recorded 10.76m for second place. Despite feeling the after-effects of her
cross-country run in Holland Schools colours the previous day, Emily also
produced a personal best time of 28.1secs for the 200 metres to complete a
successful weekend for the young combined events athlete. On Sunday January 29 competition reverts to sportshall

Favell won her first gold medal outside Lincolnshire when she took the north
of England indoor pentathlon title at Sheffield on Sunday. Jodie had an
outstanding day to finish ninth in the AAA of England championship with a
personal best total of 3,156 points. Opening with a personal best 9.43secs for the first
event the 60 metres hurdles Jodie followed up with another best ever
performance in high jump clearing 1.54m. A good shot putt of 8.78m preceded
another good performance in long jump where a leap of 5.20m was near to
Jodie’s best.In the final event despite fatigue she ran a personal best 2mins
37.3secs for 800metres to secure the north of England title. Anna Lenton
opened with a 9.96secs personal best 60m hurdles, cleared 1.45m in high jump

teams featured in the Lincolnshire County Cross-Country Championships at Louth
on Sunday. The senior men’s team were in the silver medal position
together with the under-13 boys A squad. In addition the Gold Tops’ under-13
B team finished third along with both the under-15 boys and under-13 girls
teams. In the individual awards, James Lunn claimed runners-up position in
the 4,7632 metres contest for under-17 men. Weather conditions were good with
the underfoot situation sticky on the long up-hill section with muddy patches
in the low portions of the course. James made good progress and held on to
second place for a county silver award. In the opening event on the programme an under-11
non-championship race Alice Flint secured an impressive victory. With just
100m of the 1,798 metres challenge remaining, Alice was in contention along
with two other runners. Raising the tempo Alice sprinted into the finish
funnel to beat the opposition and claim her first Lincolnshire win. In the senior men’s competition over 9,066 metres Shaun
North led in the Boston and District contingent. Finishing sixth, Shaun was seven places ahead of second
counter David Tilley (13th) with Stuart Cragg a further four places adrift

Tomlin 31st and Robert Whyler 32nd for eighth team place. In a strong under-17 women’s event over 4,763 metres

Week ending Sunday January 8: On her
16th birthday Boston and District Athletic Club member Emily Moss finished fifth
English girl at the AAA under-17 indoor combined events championships at
Sheffield. On Sunday Emily won the North of England Championships. Silver
medal for her second place in the regional championship and finished seventh
in the AAA competition. Opening with a personal best 9.79secs for 60m hurdles Emily then cleared 1.52m in high jump before producing a 7.74m personal best shot putt. Slightly disappointed by a 4.96m long jump where she would have hoped for a leap in excess of 5m Emily finished with a flourish. Her time of 2mins 32secs for 800 metres was a PB indoors and equalled her best outdoor time for the distance. With a points total of 2,993 for the complete pentathlon Emily was only 31 points behind the North of England gold medallist. It’s an excellent start to her 2006 athletics career. A small
contingent of Boston and District Athletic Club distance runners opened the
New Year with a trip to Sutton in Ashfield for the final North Midlands
Cross-Country League match. On a demandingly wet, muddy and hilly course, the
cold weather made the racing quite an ordeal. In the
senior, junior, veteran women’s event Jodie Favell was delighted with her
38th place at the end of her first season competing in the North Midlands
League. Over the 2005-06 series Jodie has made good progress match by match
and will certainly reap the rewards in the forthcoming track and field
season. Only
Owen Msimango competed in the senior men’s race and he finished in a
mid-field position in 110th place. Despite a back problem, Chris Cooper came
home 19th in the under-17 men’s contest. At under-15 level Mark Tebbs claimed
his best ever North Midlands League finish crossing the line in a very
rewarding 13th place. Ashton Perrin was 21st and the team placed ninth
overall. Responding well to the challenge Jeremy Baily was 31st and although
hampered by the loss of his shoes Craig Melvin came home 32nd. In the
under-13 category Aiden McClure was 33rd and Robin Perrin 40th. On Sunday
January 15, the Lincolnshire County Cross-Country Championships will be held
at Louth. The programme opens with an open non-championship race for under-11
boys and girls at 11.45am. The 2005-2006 Lincolnshire Cross-Country League
Awards will be presented at the County Championships on the same day. In a
lean cross-country period for the local club, two all-rounders have qualified
for end of series awards. In the under-17 women’s category Emily Moss secured
the runners-up silver award at the end of a good season over the country.
With two fourth places and a second in the final three events in the series
Emily claimed second league position. In the
senior women’s section, club captain Jodie Favell earned the bronze award
finishing third overall despite competing in only three of the four events in
the 2005-2006 series. With
the best three results in the series counting for the awards, Jodie had no
margin for error and third, fifth and eighth placings have her third ranking. Outside
the top three a further trio of female Gold Tops are listed in the end of
season rankings having finished a minimum of three Lincolnshire League races.
Alice Flint is in fifth place and Maria Hollingsworth ninth in the under-11
category. At under-13 level Louise Rutt is also in ninth position. There
are no Boston and District male representatives in the top three positions
this year. In the under-13 boys’ section Craig Melvin is sixth, Aiden McClure
eighth, Robin Perrin 11th and Jake Clare 12th. At under-15 level Mark Tebbs
is eighth and Aston Perrin 14th.
After a good first season Chris Cooper finished in an encouraging
fifth place in a strong under-17 men’s category. Steve Hubbard (ninth) and
Pete Flint (13th) are the only senior men who completed the necessary three
Lincs League contests. In the veteran men’s age group David Johnson (13th)
and Bob Whyler (23rd) are listed. |
