Week ending Sunday April 30:

 

Members of Boston and District Athletic Club produced a number of good early season performances and a total of 38 first places at the first Lincolnshire track and field league match of the summer.

 

Under-13 Alice Flint recorded 6mins 09.5secs in finishing second in the 1,500 metres and added a ninth long jump (2.75m) and seventh in the 200 metres (34.3secs). With victories in the shot and 70m hurdles under her belt, Ellis Whyler also achieved a second place in the 100 metres recording 14.2secs.

 

In the boys’ section, Aidan McClure ran a good 1,500 metres finishing second in 5mins 40.3secs and cleared 1.24m for third place in high jump. Harry Cartwright went one better when leaping 1.30m for second place in the high jump. Harry Baxter crossed the line second recording 2min 47.7secs for the 800 metres.

 

Like their under-13 team-mates, the under-15 team members distinguished themselves. Melanie Bristow threw the 600g javelin 17.71m for second place and also claimed third place in high jump with a clearance of 1.18m.

Rachel Holland’s 5.90m in shot earned her third place and 28.8secs for 200 metres put her in fourth place. Stephanie Hendy was second in the discus with 14.24m and shot putter Haden Brittain made a breakthrough with a 6.87m effort to claim second in his event.

 

Crossing the line second, Jeremy Baily was timed at 5mins 20.9secs for 1,500 metres and also added a fourth in long jump (4.12m) and a third over 800 metres 2mins 37.1secs.A clearance of 1.40m gave Michael Robinson second in high jump and Aston Perrin recorded 5mins 24.4secs in finishing third in the 1,500 metres. While Jake Clare contributed valuable points in both track and field events. Chris Cooper 5mins 35.7secs and Mark Tebbs 5mins 41.1secs made a reasonable fist of the season’s first 1,500m steeplechase and Jake Mason tested his sprinting speed over 200 metres recording 25.3secs in second place and threw the javelin 32.64m for another runners-up position.

 

For the girls, Emma Richardson cleared 1.30m for second in high jump and Emily Moss produced a 27.5secs 200 metres sprint for another runners-up position.

 

In the under-20s section John Haresign recorded 65.1secs for 400m hurdles second and Jose Ferreira finished third in the 1,500 metre recording 5mins 46.2secs. In the 800 metres, Stuart Smith crossed the line second in a time of 2mins 25.1secs and in the under-20 women’s category Anna Lenton threw 21.56m for a javelin second and 7.92m in shot with Natalie Grimer third in the 4kg shot with a best putt of 6.85m.

 

At senior ladies’ level Jodie Favell crossed the finish line in 26.7secs in a swift 200 metres. “Ebbs” Eseomi secured second in the senior men’s 100 metres with a promising early season time of 11.3secs. And both Phil Peatling and Karl Wright contributed valuable points from a range of track and field events. Veterans Clayton, Whyler and Creese produced some solid performances in the field, making it a good day for the Gold Tops right across the age range.

 

Tonight (Wednesday) the first of this season’s Eastern Veterans League matches will be held at the Lynn Sport track in King’s Lynn. There are events for men’s over 40s and women’s over 35s in different age categories on the track and in the field. The programme of events starts at 7pm.

 

On Saturday Boston and District AC open their North of England League season with the A team involved in a Division Two match at Rotherham and the B team hosting their first ever Division Four match at Haven.

Selected teams of under-17s, senior and veteran men and women will represent the Gold Tops in the inaugural 2006 fixtures.

 

Entries for the Lincolnshire Combined Events Championships at Boston on May 19 and 20 close at the weekend.

With pentathlons (under-15 boys and girls), octathlon (under-17 men), heptathlons (under-17s, under-20s and senior women) and decathlons (under-20s and senior men) championships field in conjunction with the schools county championships it should be a very competitive two-day event.

 

Week ending Sunday April 23:

 

Damp, chilly weather did not appear to deter Boston and District AC competitors at the second Lincs League match at Grantham on Sunday. Captains Mark Bowler and Jodie Favell laid down a marker for the match when they achieved clear victories in the opening events on the track, the 400 metres hurdles.

 

Despite the cold Jodie recorded 67.3secs to win the women’s race and Mark followed with 60.2secs to win the senior mens contest. Jodie added a further two victories in shot with a putt of 9.26m and javelin with a throw of 34.04m. A number of other senior representatives achieved first places. Julia Moore had her first outing this season winning the senior 400 metres in 63.0secs and Julia White recorded an encouraging 25.3secs in winning the 200m sprint. Karl Wright won the pole vault clearing 2.65m and veteran Tim Creese opened his 2006 season with four throws victories. The “evergreen” thrower recorded 30.80m in discus, 10.58 in shot, 28.77m in hammer and 44.17m in javelin for a maximum veteran points score for BADAC.

 

Members of the under-20s squad also recorded notable first places. Simon Robinson looked strong over 400m hurdles recording 62.8secs and claimed a double over one lap when he also won the 400 metres flat in 56.6secs before clearing 1.65m for joint first place in high jump — a position shared with club-mate John Haresign. Stuart Smith’s best putt of 11.01m took the shot first position.

 

In the under-20 women’s section Stacey Worth was just shy of 30m in winning the discus with 29.48m after she had already recorded 8.60m for victory with the 4k shot. In the high jump competition Natalie Grimer cleared 1.40m for maximum points.

 

In the under-17 age group James Munn won over 1,500 metres recording 4mins 40.2secs and Chris Bloom won the triple jump with 11.95m. In his first year as an under-17, Jake Mason cleared 1.78m to top the high jump result. For the girls, Emily Moss produced a leap of 10.52m to take first place in the triple jump and cleared 4.74m for a long jump win. In her first outing this season sprinter Lauren West recorded 13.6secs for a win over 100m and Emma Richardson added another victory via a 19.19m javelin effort. Jade Mason took first place in the under-15 discus throwing 15.98m and also won the shot putting the 3.25kg weight 7.05m.

 

For the boys’ under-15 section Jake Brittain won over 3,000 metres recording 10mins 58.4secs. Alex Pycock achieved a “double”, winning the high jump with 1.43m before crossing the line first at the end of the 200 metres sprint in 25.6secs. In the short sprint (100 metres) Shannan Langham was a convincing winner in 12.2secs and the 4x200 metres squads filled both first and second places in the final event on the programme.

 

In the under-13 age group Harry Cartwright recorded 14.5secs in winning the 100 metres and then achieved another first place in long jump with a leap of 4.09m. Ellis Whyler’s leap of 1.30m won the girls high jump before she added another victory in shot with a distance of 7.60m. Under-11 Karlie Wright excelled at the long jump pit where she cleared 3.36m for a good win.

 

Marathon brigade: Seven Boston and District Athletic Club distance runners completed Sunday’s London Marathon returning from the capital with some pleasing times. Shaun North was the first Gold Top to finish recording 2 hours 42 minutes. Second over the line was Paul Green who completed his first London marathon in 3 hours 14 minutes ahead of Steve Hubbard who recorded 4 hours 4 minutes. Sharon Gallichan was timed at 4 hours 15 minutes with Brian Land on 4 hours 18 minutes. Charmaine Donald on the 4½hr mark and Gill Sleaford some three minutes under five hours.

 

Championship dates: With the entry list for the Lincolnshire Track and Field Championships on May 13 and 14 at Grantham now closed multi-eventers have just this week to submit entries for the Lincs Combined Events Championships.

 

The combined events champions will be held at Boston’s Tommy Clay track on the evening of Friday May 19 and Saturday May 20 (morning and afternoon). There are pentathlon championships for under-15 boys and girls, heptathlon contests for under-17, under-20 and senior women, octathlon for under-17 men and the ultimate combined event competition the decathlon for under-20s, senior and veteran men. Entry forms available from the club secretary must be submitted this week.

 

 

Week ending Sunday April 16:

 

In the first of this season’s Lincs Track and Field League matches, Boston and District AC members achieved a string of good performances including 34 victories and a welter of personal best performances. And fresh from the successes of that meet, local athletes will be hoping for an improved climate for Sunday April 23’s second league fixture at Grantham. Transport leaves the Princess Royal Sports Arena car park at 9.30am with the first event at 11.30am. There are competitions at all age levels.

 

Meanwhile, reflecting back to the first match, in the under-11 girls events, Karlie Wright and Annatha Munn opened their 2006 track season. Karlie recorded 12.6 secs for third place in the 80m sprint and also finished second in the long jump with 3.08m. Annatha was fifth in the 80 metres (13.0secs) and sixth over 600m (2mins 33.2secs).

 

In the youngest boys age group Andrew Harness added to his sprint victory a third place in the ball throw with a distance of 20.86m.

 

Under-13 Ellis Whyler claimed second place in the 100m sprint in 14.0secs to enhance her first places in short and hurdles. Competing in three events Alice Flint was third in 70m hurdles (16.1secs) sixth over 800 metres (3mins 14.0secs) and ninth in long jump (2.82m). Aidan McClure eased himself from cross-country and sports hall athletics with success. He was second in the 1,500m recording 5mins 43.7secs and third over 800m in 3mins 01.5secs and added a fourth in high jump (1.15m). Harry Cartwright followed his long jump win with a runners-up position in high jump clearing 1.30m and added another third in the 100 metres recording 14.5secs. Assisting with field events judging Jack Whitehead took time out to compete in the javelin where he was third (9.78m).

 

In the under-15 girls age group Melanie Bristow was third in javelin 15.72m and fourth over 100m (15.4secs).

Recording 29.2secs for 200m Rachael Holland was second across the finish line and also claimed fourth in the 75m hurdles (16.3secs). Lucy Brentnall added a second in 75m hurdles (13.8secs) and Steph Hendy also finished in runners-up spot in high jump.

 

In the under-15 boys’ section Alex Pycock followed team-mate Shannon Langham over the 100m finish line recording 12.4secs. James Cartwright achieved second position in 80m hurdles in 14.0secs and claimed third place in the 200 metres sprint clocking 26.4secs. Jake Clare was third in the shot with 6.71m and then achieved sixth places in both 200 metres 29.4secs and 100 metres 13.8secs. In middle distance events Aston Perrin was second over 800m in 2mins 34.8secs and third in the 1,500 metres 5mins 59.7secs. In the 3,000 metres Jake Brittain was second 11mins 43.0secs and also cleared 1.30m in high jump for third place. Robin Perrin was runner-up in javelin (16.31m) and third in discus and Jeremy Baily was runner-up over 1500m in 5mins 25.6secs. In the 4x100m relay competition the A quartet crossed the line in second place 52.1secs with the B team third 58.1secs.

 

In the under-17 women’s category Emily Richardson cleared 1.25m for second place in high jump.

 

In addition to the three under-17 men’s section winners, Mark Tebbs was second in discus (15.95m) and third in the 3,000 metres race recording 11mins 27.6secs.

 

Under-20 ladies Anna Lenton was third in javelin 21.21m, Natalie Grimer was second shot in a personal best of 7.60m.

 

In the under-20 men’s contest John Haresign was second in high jump (1.55m) and Jose Ferreira made his club debut in the 3,000 metres finishing fifth in 13mins 24.3secs.

 

At senior level Karl Wright was fourth in javelin (34.82m) and discus (22.12m) and third in hammer (14.31m). Phil Peatling took second place in the 100m sprint (12.1secs) and the same position in triple jump with 11.47m.

 

Week ending Sunday April 9:

 

Boston and District Athletic Club members chalked up 34 victories in the first Lincolnshire Track and Field League match at Grantham on Sunday. Despite the cold wintry weather conditions there were some heart-warming performances.

 

In the under-11 age group Andrew Harness was the clear winner of the 80 metres sprint recording 11.5secs. Two under-13s Gold Tops produced three first places for BADAC. In the girls’ section Ellis Whyler won the 70m hurdles in 12.3secs and the 2.62 shot with a putt of 7.48m Harry Cartwright won the under-13 boys’ long jump with a promising 4.16m.

 

Boston and District AC members topped the results table in nine under-15 events. The girls’ quartet won the 4x100m relay and Steph Hendy was first in discus with 13.41m. Lucy Brentnall won javelin with an encouraging 21.98m and Melanie Bristow cleared 1.10m to win the high jump. In the boys’ competition Shannon Langham was an outstanding winner of the 100 metres spring recording an impressive 11.6secs in far from condusive conditions. Alex Pycock won both high jump clearing 1.50m and the 200 metres recording 25.3secs. Michael Robinson was first in the 80m hurdles in 13.6secs and Jeremy Baily won the 800 metres recording 2mins 34.2secs. A leap of 4.54m earned first place in long jump for James Cartwright.

 

There were three Gold Tops victories in the under-17 men’s category. Over 3,000 metres James Munn recorded 10min 00.8secs for a clear win and James Bexon took first place in high jump leaping 1.65m. Recording 10.26m in the triple jump

Matthew Harness prevailed. Under-20 Mark Bridges won both the 100 metres sprint in 11.7secs and the triple jump with 11.67m. Simon Robinson went one better achieving a ‘treble’ with wins over 200 metres 24.0secs, 400 metres 58.8secs, and high jump 1.55m. John Haresign returned to competition after injury winning the 110m hurdles 17.2 and the 4x100m quartet crossed the line first in 49.7secs.

 

Anna Lenton was the winner of the under-20 100m hurdles crossing the line in 17.2secs and Stacey Worth achieved a ‘double’ in shot 8.01m and discus 28.94m. Leaping 1.45m in difficult conditions Natalie Grimer won high jump. Senior captains Jodie Favell and Mark Bowler won their respective sprint hurdles events. Jodie recording 15.4secs for 100m hurdles and Mark timed at 16.1secs for the senior men’s 110m version. The senior women’s 4x100m squad recorded 55.4secs in winning their relay and Jake Louth returned to represent the club with a good ‘double’. He threw 53.59m to win the 800g javelin and added the 2k discus victory to his tally with a throw of 37.69m. Karl Wright cleared 2.70m to win the senior men’s pole vault and went on to snatch victory in the final round of the shot with a putt of 8.43m.

 

Boston High School Year 7 and 8 runners won the 2005-2006 Fenland Schools Cross-Country League. The local athletes finished the series of three races with a total of 76 points giving them a lead of 29 points over runners-up Bourne Grammar.

 

The BHS girls finished second in the opening match and then claimed victory in the second event. Fourth place in the final match in the series was sufficient for a comfortable overall victory. In the individual placings at the end of the series, Louise Rutt was in fifth position with 25 points and Chelsea Ironmonger was in eighth place with a total of 39 points. In addition to a fine team victory, Boston High School had their B team in a good seventh place.

 

Boston Grammar School were scored in only two of the team competitions so do not appear in the final league table despite finishing fourth and fifth in matches one and three. In the Year 9 and 10 boys’ individual placings, Aston Perrin featured in 10th position with 49 points.

 

An end of series cross-country relay event was held at Crowland with teams of four runners from the 12 Fenland League schools contesting the honours. In the Year 7 and 8 girls’ relay, the Boston High School quartet of Ashleigh Frankish, Chelsea Ironmonger, Louise Rutt and Lara Busch came home in fourth place.

 

Once again the B team put in a good performance by finishing seventh with a C team closing in for 10th place. Twenty teams finished the relay race. The Year 9 and 10 girls from Boston High were in ninth team position. In the boys’ relay challenge, the Year 7 and 8 runners crossed the line in fifth position with the B team 17th.

 

The 2006 Lincolnshire Track and Field Championships will be held at South Kesteven Sports Centre, Grantham on Saturday and Sunday May 13 and 14. The closing date for entries is Friday April 21. There is a full programme of track and field championship events for all age groups from under-13 boys and girls up to veteran men and women. The under-13 boys’ and girls’ javelin and discus championships are included in the final Lincolnshire Track and Field League match at Boston on Sunday August 20. Entries from athletes who have a county birth or residence qualification should be sent to the acting county championship secretary, Julia White at 6 Lincoln Road, Ruskington, Lincolnshire NG34 9AW with a fee of £1.50 per event to arrive by Friday April 21. The longest track champion events — u17 men’s and women’s 5000m and senior and veteran men’s 1000m will also be held at Boston on August 20.

 

 

Week ending Sunday April 2:

 

Despite cold, blustery and showery conditions there were some promising performances at Boston and District Athletic Club track and field trials on April 2. A number of BADAC members produced personal best times on the track. And despite the tricky weather, jumpers and throwers also did well.

 

At under-11 level Andrew Harness recorded a sharp 11.2secs in winning the 80 metres sprint and produced a 28.94m throw with the cricket ball for a good double. Kieron Melvin was fastest over 600 metres recording 2mins 04.8secs and also won the under-11 150m in 25.3secs. Ellis Whyler won the under-13 girls 80m sprint in 11.3secs, the shot with a 7.55m effort, the 70m hurdles 12.1secs and the high jump with a clearance of 1.30m.

 

Harry Cartwright’s leap of 4.12m won the under-13 boys long jump with Alice Flint taking the honours in the girls competition with 3.12m. Aiden McClure made a promising jumps debut, leaping 3.76m and also won the under-13 600 metres in 2mins 01.6secs and the 150m sprint in 23.4secs. Alice Flint won the girls’ 600 metres recording 2mins 15.3secs. Nathan McClure made a promising debut on the track and in field events.

 

In the under-15 events Steph Hendy and Jade Mason were most impressive in the hammer competition. Despite her limited experience Steph threw 20.86m and Jade produced an outstanding 26.14m for a super victory.

Beth Platt put in a determined run over 75m hurdles recording 15.3secs and Lucy Brentnall was a clear winner of the javelin throwing 23.58m. In the sprints, Shannon Langham showed that conditions were to her liking.

 

Jake Mason cleared 1.80m in the under-17 men’s high jump. He added a second victory in the long jump with 5.57m and recorded 10.2secs for 80m sprint. James Munn completed 300 metres in 46.2secs and Mark Tebbs recorded 1min 53.5secs for 600 metres. James Bexon recorded a sharp 9.6 secs to win the 80m sprint at under-17 level. Emily Moss took advantage of the following wind down the home straight to chalk up a personal best equalling time for the 80m hurdles starting she crossed the finish line in 13.0secs to equal the best time recorded for the distance in 2005.

 

At under-20 level Stacey Worth produced a 7.48m winning shot putt and threw 25.56m in the worst of the sharp April showers that peppered the discus competitors. Anna Lenton achieved 7.26m in shot and opened her season well over 100m hurdles recording 17.9secs. A leap of 1.40m won the under-20 high jump for Natalie Grimer and she added a promising 18.11m in discus. Stuart Smith won the under-20 shot (11.05m), 300 metres sprint (43.2secs) and he has a good track future ahead of him. He recorded 9.7secs over 80 metres, fell at the last barrier in the sprint hurdles having made excellent progress until that point and then looked in a class on his own over 150 metres crossing the finish line in 18.3secs. Jake Clare ran well over 300m (48.7secs) and cleared 3.97m in long jump and 6.47m in shot.

 

David Sharpe headed the under-15 contestants in the 600 metres (1min 52.9secs) won the discus (16.86m) and showed a good turn of speed over 600 metres (1min 52.9secs). Craig Melvin and Jake Brittain successfully mixed track and field events successfully and Josh Goodfellow demonstrated his improved performances over 600 metres (2mins 43.3secs) and 80 metres (16.7secs). Despite the difficult conditions Jake Mason discus (31.78m). For good measure, he also achieved 20.73m in hammer for a further victory. Mark Bridges opened his 2006 outdoor season impressively winning the 80m sprint with a 9.5secs run and had the upper hand in the hotly contested triple jump dual with senior Phil Peatling.His 12.21m winning effort was an excellent personal best and he also won the long jump with 5.92m. Another under-20 who has wintered well is Simon Robinson who opened with a 300m hurdles victory (44.93) then cleared 1.65m in high jump and recorded 9.6secs and just edged out of first spot by Mark Bridges over 80 metres.

 

At senior level Jodie Favell experimented with pole vault and produced a 48.53secs effort in the 300m hurdles race. A 4.86m long jump preceded a good run over 100m hurdles in 15.3secs. After a first 10.1 seconds effort over 80 metres sprinter Julia White recorded 9.7secs in he second contest over the distance. Phil Peatling appears to be approaching his best ever form with an improved triple jump of 11.73m and a long jump of 5.61m.

 

Elsewhere on the county front, in the final Lincolnshire cross-country event of the season James Munn moved up to junior men’s age group for the county competition against the national air cadets team. And he responded well in the older age group, finishing in third place at RAF Cranwell helping Lincolnshire to a good team victory.

 

On April 9 the Gold Tops travel to the Meres Leisure Centre in Grantham for the first of this season’s Lincolnshire Track and Field League matches. The opening event is at 11.30am with club transport departing from the Princess Royal Sports Arena at 9.30am. There is a full programme of events for all age groups from under-11s up to veterans.
