Good performances despite rainy conditions

A contingent of local-area athletes donned Lincolnshire Schools colours to compete in the annual Anglian Counties Championships at Norwich. There were some fine performances, but overall, the competitors were hampered by heavy downpours amid wholly unsummer-like conditions. The event was held at the University of East Anglia when Lincolnshire representatives gave a good account of themselves.

Ten Holland male competitors were included in the county junior boys team and achieved five first places, two seconds and four third positions. Jacob Oxtell won the 400 metres in 53.0secs and the 100 metres in 11.9secs. In the 200 metres, Alex Pycock won in 23.8secs and cleared 1.70m in high jump for second place. Sam Young achieved a fine personal best by winning the high jump with a leap of 1.78m. He also claimed third place in the 80m hurdles. Tom Rodgers was outside his Lincs Schools Championships winning time but achieved a good victory in the 1500 metres finishing in 4mins 32.1secs. A leap of 11.98m in triple jump gave Jeremy Baily a new pb and first place.

Three Holland District throwers achieved third places in their respective field events. Ashley Barsey was third in shot with 11.46m, Andrew Hewitt finished in the same position in javelin with 39.39m and Haden Brittain added further third place points in hammer with a throw of 29.36m. Elsewhere, Peter Spencer recorded 12.2secs in second place in the 80m hurdles race on a day when the Lincs junior boys produced an excellent team performance. And in the triple jump George Leatherland achieved 10.53m to secure sixth position.

In the junior girls’ age group, Andrea Jackson’s javelin throw was a little down on her Lincs Schools Championships winning effort. But in more difficult weather conditions, she threw 21.72m. Ellis Whyler came fourth was in the high jump discipline with a clearance of 1.45m. In the long jump, a leap of 4.59m gave Charlotte Taylor fifth position and Chelsea Brockett finished in the same position at the end of the 1500 metres, recording 5mins 11.6secs. Sarah Stanhope claimed a fifth in javelin 19.93m and a sixth in discus 21.48m.

In the intermediate boys’ category, Sean Band came third in discus 41.49m and finished fourth in javelin with a throw of 42.66m. At the hammer circle Nathan Ironmonger threw 29.31m for third and Chris Battle threw the javelin 42.09m for fifth position. On the track, Mark Tebbs crossed the finish line fourth at the end of the steeplechase race and Alex Gibb was sixth in the 1500 metres. Shamen Alloy-Langham recorded 23.7secs in second position over 200 metres.

Three Holland intermediate girls achieved a total of four runners-up places between them. Sophie Hallam claimed second place in the 300m hurdles. Emily Richardson cleared 1.45m in high jump and threw the javelin 28.61m for a pair of seconds and Steph Hendy threw the hammer 29.48m for her runners-up place. Two fourths were Kelly Lawrence's contribution in hammer 21.05m and shot 8.70m and Leanne Langley ran eighth in the 100 metres in a time of 14.1secs.

In the senior boys’ section, sprinter Chris Craig remains unbeaten in 2007 schools competition. Over 200 metres he ran o.1 seconds faster than in the Lincs Championships, winning in 22.2secs and recorded 11.3secs in first place in the 100 metres. Mark Bridges jumped 6.19m in long jump for second place and added a fourth in triple jump with a clearance of 12.08m. Reducing his 100m hurdles best performance yet again, Matthew Harness finished second in his first outing for the county. Still struggling with injury, Leon Pycock was a shade disappointed with his seventh place in 100 metres. In the distance events James Munn was fourth in the 1500 metres in 4mins 25.4secs.

Stuart Smith’s hammer throw in excess of 31m gave him victory in that event and in discus a 33.91m effort earned Stuart second position.

Two local senior girl representatives gained second positions. Emily Moss recorded 71.1secs in runners-up spot in the 400m. Hurdles and hammer thrower Ellie Jackson added 10cms to her Lincolnshire Championships performance, recording 35.41m. Natasha Frolich was fourth in the 1500 metres in 5mins 26.6secs and also ran in the 3k race. Natalie Grimer was third in long jump 3.95m and Hayley Pycock ran sixth in the 200 metres 30.4secs and Kathryn Sperring competed over 800 metres.

In the relay events, Lincolnshire teams achieved a victory, two second places and a third. A number of young athletes have been selected to represent Lincolnshire at the 2007 English Schools Track and Field Championships at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium on July 13 and 14.
