Round-up for January 21

James secures county schools title accolade

There was title glory joy for Boston Grammar School athlete James Munn on January 20 when he landed top honours in the Lincolnshire Schools cross-country championship in the senior boys (under-19s) age group. Despite breezy and difficult conditions on the Coronation Channel course in Spalding, he ran well from the front and deservedly triumphed for the Holland district over the 7,200m distance.

Holland were also successful in the team championships, winning the under-15s boys title on 68 points, well clear of nearest challengers Lincoln (98) and South Kesteven (106). The under-19s girls were also victorious as they finished clear of Lincoln by a margin of eight points (30 to 38). Elsewhere, the Holland under-13s boys were runners-up (97 points) behind Lincoln. Also on the boys’ front, the under-17s and under-19s finished in third place.

In the senior boys’ event, Munn’s performance received good backing from Liam Mundt (BGS 12th), Adam Tempest (BGS 16th), Jason Stevenson (Boston College 20th), Aaron Bates (BGS 24th) and Stuart Smith (BGS 25th).

In the senior girls’ event over 4,400m, Boston College student Natalie Froliku came fourth. Kathryn Sperring (Boston high School) finished ninth and Natalie Grimer (also BHS) was 10th.

In the under-13s age range, Haven High pupil Mantas Knisevskis produced a fine run at under-13s level. He battled hard in the 4,400m event and grabbed second place overall with a strong finish. His performance looks like yielding selection for the Lincolnshire team when the Anglian Counties Championships take place at Ipswich on February 3. At Spalding, Mantas was given good support in the boys’ team — Kieran Melvin of Giles School coming second while Gleed pupil Harry Rogers was ninth. Others racing in support were BGS trio Michael Craven (19th), Nathan McClure (34th), Sam Johnson (35th) and Haven’s Josh Dunworth (54th).

In the under-13s girls section, Holland champion Alice Flint of Boston High School led the local challenge and finished 11th over the 3,600m course. The next Holland finisher was Summer Abraham of Goerge Farmer School (24th).

In the under-15s boys contest, Tom Rogers (Gleed) led the Holland charge in fourth spot while team-mate Craig Melvin (Boston BG) came sixth and Jeremy Baily (also BGS) was ninth. Two other BGS runners also lent good support with Richard Reed in 17th spot and Jamie Saggs in 34th.

At under-15s level for the girls, Wednesday Pywowariw (Boston High School) was first Holland finisher in 13th spot. Support came from several other good runs by BHS competitors, namely Louise Rutt (18th), Ashleigh Frankish (22nd), Sian Worthington (38th), Heather Guy (49th), Chelsea Ironmonger (55th) and Stephanie Smith (58th).

At boys’ under-17s level Gleed’s Simon Jasper came seventh. Scott Forman (George Farmer) was 10th while third Holland finisher was Giles Favell (Thomas Cowley School). Providing good back-up support were BGS runners Mark Tebbs (28th), Michael West (30th), David Bosworth (33rd), Aston Perrin 36th and Thomas Cowley’s Stephen Brockett (37th).

For the under-17 girls, Holland were led in over the 3,600m event by Becky Wycherley (St Guthlacs, Crowland). Kristian Blazkova (BHS) finished 54th.

North leads Boston cross-country contingent

The final fixture of the North Midlands Cross Country League competition was held at Wollaton Park, Nottingham, on January 13. Here, eight members of Boston and District Athletic Club were involved in the action on an internationally recognised course.

Despite muddy conditions, Shaun North did well to claim 23rd place in the senior men’s race. Boston team-mate Owen Msimango was 166th. At the younger age range, Aidan McClure finished 23rd in the boys’ under-13s group. Colleagues Sam Johnson (31st) and Alex Goldspink (42nd) offered good support to help towards the team’s total of 96 points.

Craig Melvin in 26th spot led the Gold Tops ‘under-15s boys’ contingent. Aston Perrin was 29th while Robin Perrin was 38th as the Boston team finished on 93 points.

Elsewhere, the Lincolnshire Schools’ Cross Country Championship on January 20 will see runners representing the Holland and District region pitting their talents against rivals from South East Lindsey, West Lindsey, Lincoln, South Kesteven and Grantham and District.

The Holland competitors will run on their home course of Spalding’s Coronation Channel. The first race will be at 11am. Events will encompass races for boys and girls at u13s, 1u15s, u17s and u19s levels.

Team and individual championships will be up for grabs along with selection for Lincolnshire teams due to contest the Anglian Counties Cross Country Championships and the English Schools AA Championships on March 24 to be held in Leeds.

Meanwhile, nine youngsters from the Boston area will be part of the Lincolnshire Sportshall team taking part in the East Midlands region finals on February 4 at Grantham.

At under-13s level Andrew Harness and Alice Flint will figure for the boys and girls teams respectively. In the under-15s section, Aston Perrin, Aidan McClure, Hannah Boyes, Ellis Whyler, Ashleigh Frankish, Lara Busch and Jasmine Orrey are involved.

Competition for the Lincolnshire youngsters will be against athletes from several counties including Notts, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Warwicks and South Yorkshire.
