Round-up for February 11
Silver medals reward for BADAC youngsters
A group of Boston and District Athletic Club distance
runners competed in the Eastern Athletic Association Cross-Country
Championships at Peterborough on February 11. The young Gold Tops returned
with two sets of team silver medals and an individual silver accolade.
In the schedule’s final race James Munn took part in the
under-17 men’s 6,000m championship. Conditions underfoot at the course close
to Peterborough Rowing Club were extremely heavy. But sunshine made for a
pleasant event. James began well, chasing a talented West Norfolk AC athlete
who featured in a single figure finish at the recent South of England
Championships. James maintained good momentum to take the silver medal in
21mins 44secs, five seconds behind this year’s Eastern region champion.
Four BADAC boys took part in the under-13 boys’ 3000m race. Wet conditions
made it hard going but the quartet dug deep to claim creditable results. Aidan
McClure came eighth in 13 minutes 18 seconds. He led in Ben Thomas (11th in13:33),
Michael Craven (12th in 13:37) and Sam Johnson (18th in14:29). A team score
of 31 points gave BADAC second place and their Eastern silver medals.
The under-15 boys tackled a 4,000m challenge intent on emulating their
under-13 team-mates. Craig Melvin led the Gold Tops by battling well across
the wet and heavy surface. He entered the finishing funnel in 13th
place overall in a time of 16 minutes 45seconds.
Jeremy Baily was forced to run without spikes. And despite being at a
considerable disadvantage he showed good determination to finish 14th
(16: 50). Aston Perrin in 17th place (17:28), supported by Robin
Perrin 22nd (23:06) helped to ensure second place and more silver
medals for the BADAC team.

Round-up for February 4
Boston runners make important
contributions
Boston area runners contributed to the
Lincolnshire Schools team successes at the annual Anglian Counties
Cross-Country Championships in Suffolk. After the flat Coronation Channel
course used for the Lincolnshire Championships, representatives encountered a
much more varied and demanding terrain beside the Orwell Estuary near
Ipswich. The long and extensive slopes sapped the energy of the fittest
contenders.
In glorious spring-like conditions, James Munn of Boston Grammar School
achieved the highest position of the local contingent. In the 6,900 metres
senior boys race he began in a comfortable position just off the leader's
pace and built on that as the race unfolded. Making good progress over the
final 2,000 metres, James finished strongly holding good form right to the
end to claim a very good fifth place.
Ahead of him were some notable distance runners from East Anglia, giving
James a confidence boost before the forthcoming national events. Liam Mundt
of Boston Grammar School improved on his 12th ranking at the county event to
finish with a strong run for home in 34th position.
In the senior girls event over 4,040 metres, Natasha Frolich of Boston
College put in a very commendable performance to finish in 19th position
assisting the Lincs team to third place.
In the under-17 boys race, Alex Gibb of George Farmer, made up for a
disappointing experience in the county event by achieving 17th place. He
maintained a good rhythm throughout the demanding 5,700 metres challenge and
then overtook three competitors on the 200 metres run in to the finishing
funnel. Behind him Stephan Jasper of Gleed Boys, finished 33rd and Scott
Forman of George Farmer, was in 37th position.
Four Holland District lads contributed to Lincolnshire’s under-17 boys second
team place.
Leading the locals home at the end of the 4,040 metres race was the ever
consistent Tom Rodgers of Gleed Boys, who was 10th. Lloyd Kempson of Spalding
Grammar finished in 36th place with Jeremy Baily 46th and Craig Melvin 48th
both from Boston Grammar School.
After her 13th position in the County Schools under-15 race, Wednesday
Pywowariw gave a good account of herself at Anglian Counties level. She ran
well to achieve a promising 51st place in her first regional competition.
Boston-born Rachel Ademokun running for Suffolk, looked impressive in 12th
position.
The Lincs under-13 boys squad also finished in runners-up spot. The 2,900
metres event proved a hard test for the locals. Kieran Melvin of Giles
achieved the highest place crossing the line 23rd with Harry Rodgers (Gleed)
30th and Mantas Knisevskis (Haven High) 35th.
In the under-13 girls event, Lincolnshire had their six team counters through
the finish in the first 15 places for a resounding victory. In her first
Anglian competition, Alice Flint of Boston High achieved an encouraging 36th
position.
Silver success: Boston and District Athletic
Club sprinter Julia White won the 60m sprint silver medal at the North of
England Indoor Championships. Competing at Sheffield, Julia won her heat in
7.80secs on Saturday to qualify for the final 24 hours later. She stepped up a gear in the final, producing a season's
best 7.74 to clinch the regional senior women's silver championship medal.
