Gold Tops impress in concluding national fixture
Youngsters from Boston
and District Athletic Club finished second in the final National Young
Athletes’ League match of the season. The contest was held at the Tommy Clay
track. The Gold Tops achieved a total of 353 points, putting them just behind
the City of Sheffield team on 399
and ahead of Blaydon 348 and Scarborough 61.
In addition, yet another BADAC team member was awarded a 2007
athlete-of-the-match award. Ellis Whyler won the under 15 girls’ long jump
with a leap of 4.66 metres to earn the female field man of the match award.
There were a number of outstanding performances as the local contingent
enjoyed their taste of home advantage.
In the under-17 men’s pole vault, Jake Brittain won with
a new personal best performance, clearing a height of 3.10m. Elsewhere,
Michael Robinson won the 100m hurdles in 15.5 seconds and George Wood
finished first in both the hammer competition (21.20m) and the discus event
(25.77m) to establish three more under-17 men’s section victories. In the
sprints, Stanner Aloy Langham recorded 11.6 secs (100m) and 23.7secs (200m)
and Stephan Brockett produced a 25.4 seconds performance in the 200m and also
featured well in the high jump (1.60m) and long jump (5.55m). In his field
events, Michael Robinson achieved distances of 1.55m and 3.96m in high and
long jumps respectively. Jake Brittain triple jumped 10.68m, to add value and
Josh Goodfellow demonstrated his sprint progress recording 17.4secs for 100m.
In middle distance events, Michael West recorded 2mins 14.3secs for 800m and
5 mins 00.3 secs for 1,500m. Mark Tebbs ran 400m hurdles in 71.0 secs, 1,500
steeple chase in 5 mins 45.3 secs and 800m in 2 mins 29.4 secs. A combination
of Stanner Aloy Langham, Stephan Brockett, Mark Tebbs and Michael Robinson
recorded 4mins 13.4secs for third place in the 4 x 400 metre relay. The Gold
Tops 4 x 100m quartet clocked 48.4 secs to win a good spring relay race.
In the under-17 women’s section the BADAC contingent were prominent both on
the track and in field events. Hannah Boyes won the 80m hurdles in 13.0 secs
and Rachel Holland won the B race in a time of 13.2 secs for a maximum points
score. Stephanie Hendy (34.58m) and Rochelle Parkes (19.29) metres achieved
the same result in hammer as did Emily Richardson 1.55m and Hannah Boyes
1.48m in high jump. In the javelincontest Lucy Brentnall threw 30.42m for
second place and Emily Richardson won the B event with a throw of 27.7m. In
the sprints, Isabelle Whitehead’s 100m time of 14.3 secs and Hannah Boyes’
200m time of 27.9 secs plus Rachel Holland’s 200m time of 29.8 secs
contributed good points. Isabelle recorded 52.6 secs for 300 metres hurdles
and 9.44m for triple jump and there was added value through Amy Bristow shot
5.9m and long jump 3.59m. Rochelle Parkes triple-jumped 8.49m and threw the
discus 18.63m, Lucy Brentnall putt the shot 8.15m and Steph. Hendy threw the
discus 16.44m. The Gold Tops’ 4 x 300m relay team claimed second place in a
time of 3 mins 52.0 secs.
In the under 15 boys’ section, Boston
and District AC team members were most impressive, winning both A and B
contests in no less than seven events. The Gold Tops achieved maximum points
in all three sprints with Alex Pycock finishing first in 100m 11.5 secs and
200m in 23.8 secs while Jacob Axtell returned to good form to win the 400m in
54.8 secs. The B races were won by Elliott Winslow-Thorpe (12.1 secs), Jacob
Axtell (24.3 secs) and Jake Clare (60.3 secs) while the sprint hurdlers
emphasised the BADAC team’s supremacy. Peter Spencer won the 80m hurdles A
race in 12.1 secs with Sam Young taking the B event honours in 12.7 secs.
Peter threw 37.17m to win the javelin with Haden Brittain earning maximum
points with a B victory 25.30m. Two excellent high jump performances totally
dominated the event with Sam Young clearing 1.76m and Alex Pycock leaping
1.73m for two URA grade standards.At the long jump pit Jeremy Baily won the A
event with 4.95m and Jake Clare achieved victory in the B contest with 4.37m.
A 2.30m performance gave Peter Spencer first place in the pole vault and
Haden Brittain excelled in the hammer throw by taking first place with a
distance of 34.16m. Additional points contributions came from Jeremy Baily
1,500m second 4 mins 47.3 secs and the 4 x 400 metres relay squad emphasized
the Gold Tops supremacy in the under 15 boys’ section with an outstanding
victory in 3 mins 54.7 secs. For their part, the under 15 girls also
dominated some events. In support of Ellis Whyler in the long jump, Jasmine
Orrey won the B competition in 4.38m. Chelsea Brockett won high jump in 1.45m
and 800m 2 mins 31.5 secs and the throwers accumulated maximum points in
discus — Sarah Stanhope 22.13m and Paige Mitchell 12.97m and in the javelin
Melanie Bristow won with 24.30m and Sarah Stanhope achieved 22.73 metres. At
the shot circle Sarah Stanhope was second with 6.70m and Paige Mitchell won
the B event in 5.34m, Ellis Whyler ran the 75m hurdles in 12.3 secs (second)
and Malenie Bristow won the B race with 12.6 secs. The sprinters played their
part well with Melanie Bristow recording 14.1 secs for the 100m, Jasmine
Orrey achieved a fine 14.0 secs for the 100m and Ellis Whyler achieved 27.4
secs and Lara Busch 29.0 to impress over 200m while the 4 x 100 metres team
recorded 56.4 secs.
The under 13 boys’ squad produced some encouraging performances with Michael
Craven achieving 5 mins 26.2 secs and Sam Johnson 5 mins 47.0 secs to claim
maximum points in the 1,500 metres. Sprinters Bradley Wilson (100 metres 14.7
secs), Josh Bell (100 metres 15.0 secs), Oliver Connor (200 metres 32.4 secs)
and Shaun Steele (200 metres 37.0 secs) all gained valuable experience.
Frazer Bayliss (3 mins 05.9 secs) and Alex Goldspin (3 mins 06.2 secs)
claimed second places in the 800m and Daniel Busch and Joh Wattam made
promising debuts. In the under-13 girls’ section Eloise Orrey responded well
to the challenge by recording 14.1 secs for 100m and 2.76m in the long jump.
Karlie Wright was runner-up over 150m in 23.5 secs and also scored well in
the 70m hurdles with a time of 15.1 secs and then long jumped 3.24m. Alice
Flint was third over 800m in 2 mins 41.2 secs, and recorded 14.9 secs for the
70m hurdles contest.
Second place represented an excellent finish to the
National Young Athletes League season for Boston
and District AC, who once again revelled in playing host to visitors from Yorkshire
and the North East.
