Memorable season for club’s excellent athletes

It has been the most successful season ever for Boston and District Athletic Club. And members have made sure some notable achievements have gone against their names. They have won a place in the National Jubilee Plate final, a place in the North of England League One play-offs, a place in the North of England Cup final and their juniors have gained promotion in the National Young Athletes League. Formed in 2000 and based at the Princess Royal Sports Arena the club has gone from strength to strength at the Tommy Clay Track leaving in their wake larger city clubs throughout the north of England.

The club convincingly won their final North of England Division Two match on Sunday and secured a place in next month Division One play-off match. Competing at home the Gold Tops finished with 467 points ahead of Chesterfield 435, Rotherham 426, Lincoln 409, Barnsley 356, Derby 283 and Grantham 145.

In six events Boston and District AC secured a maximum 18 points. In the men’s 100 metres, Eberechi Eseonu won the A race recording 11.1secs and Steve Peters took the B event in a time of 11.5secs. Maintaining his consistent winning ways over 400m hurdles this season, Mark Bowler won the A event in 58.6secs and Simon Robinson followed his example in the B race when crossing the line in 60.0secs. The same two representatives took maximum points again in the 110m hurdles competition with Mark clocking 16.0secs in the A contest and Simon 18.5secs in the B event. The host club’s two young long jumpers also contributed maximum points with Jake Mason clearing 6.25m to win the A event and Mark Bridges recorded 6.13m to take the B contest.

Two women’s field events harvested the full quota of points. In the triple jump Anna Lenton took victory in the A competition with a leap of 9.76m and Isabel Whitehead moved up a level clearing 9.31m to win the B event. A throw of 32.60m won the A javelin contest for Jodie Favell and Emily Richardson won the B event with a 26.97m effort. In five events Boston and District AC secured 16 points.

In the men’s 200metres ‘Ebbs’ Eseonu scored a double when he won the A event in 23.0secs and veteran Steve Peters claimed second position in the B race recording 23.6secs. Jake Louth won the discus competition with 40.98m and veteran Tim Creese competing at the Tommy Clay Track for the first time threw 29.15m to take second place in the B event. Jake Mason improved on his AAA Championships high jump achievement at Alexander Stadium the previous day and cleared a personal best 1.96m for a magnificent victory. A leap of 1.70m by Simon Robinson earned him runners-up position in the B event.

In the men’s javelin event Jake Louth threw 52.38m to claim second place in the A competition and veteran Steve Ladds won the B event with 43.91m. The women’s 100m hurdles event realised 16 points with Jodie Favell finishing second in the A race (16.1secs) and Anna Lenton a clear winner of the B event (17.6secs). There were a number of other events where BADAC scored in excess of 10 points. Jodie Favell scored another fine victory in the 400m hurdles (68.2secs) and Sarah Tointon was fourth in the B race (84.0secs) and in high jump both Emily Moss and Emily Richardson cleared 1.45m.

In the longest event on the programme the men’s 5,000metres Ivo Rodrigues finished third in 16mins 25.1secs and Paul Higham was second in the B event in 17mins 54.5secs and Owen Msimango crossed the line fourth in the 3,000m steeple-chase 11mins 55.6secs. Triple jumpers Mark Bridges 11.65m second and Phil Peatling 10.89m third in the B event and shot putters Jake Louth 10.72m and Tim Creese 9.50m contributed well to the points total. The same two throwers added value at the hammer circle where Jake achieved 28.29m and Tim 27.93m and Phil Peatling (2.80m) and Tim Creese (2.70m) also secured pole vault points. With Jason Pedley and Jack Albrow putting in sterling performances over 800 and 1,500metres and Phil Peatling and Mark Bridges giving their all over 400metres the BADAC men’s squad produced a good points total. Disqualification in the 4x100metres following a faulty changeover failed to take the edge off a good team performance.

In the women’s events the sprinters returned some encouraging performances. Julie Moore was third in the 400m (61.4secs), fourth over 200m (28.4secs) and fourth in the 100m race (13.2secs). In the B contests Lauren West (100m, third in 13.5secs and 400m, fifth in 67.4secs) and Anna Lenton (200m, third in 29.3secs) all scored well. Emily Moss was fourth in the 800 metres (2mins 30.5secs) and Isabel Whitehead claimed third place in the B race (3mins 00.2secs). Hannah Roy (5mins 46.1secs and 12mins 36.4secs) and Emma Bellchambers (6mins 47.1secs and 14mins 01.4secs) contributed well in both the 1,500 metres and 3,000 metres events.Sarah Tointon was third in the hammer (27.04m) and second in the B discus contest (24.10m) while Zoe Tristan was fourth in the A discus throwing 24.95m. Jodie Favell was fourth in shot (9.03m) and Tonya Annett Robinson was second in both the B hammer (26.65m) and shot (8.20m). At the pole vault, Natalie Grimer cleared 2.10m for fourth place. Emily Moss’ leap of 5.26m earned her third place in long jump with Jodie Favell taking first place in the B competition with a leap of 5.05m. The women’s 4x100m quartet finished third (53.4secs) and the 4x400m squad crossed the line in fourth place 4mins 21.7secs.

The Tommy Clay Memorial 10-mile Road Race scheduled for this Sunday at Holbeach has been cancelled.

The recent hot weather has deterred runners from entering a 10-mile road event and the organisers have called off the race for this year.
