Round-up for September 1

Pilgrim Bowmen

The Pilgrim Bowmen club from Boston held their annual Jack Oliver Memorial tournament. This event was named after a founder member of the club who had worked endlessly for the good of the club, archery in general and was a respected regional judge. The day of the tournament dawned overcast but cheered up in the early afternoon, warming slightly but with a tricky, variable wind. As the shoot neared the last distance, dark clouds gathered and the final 24 arrows were shot in the wet. Nevertheless, everyone was prepared for the worst and there were still some very good scores. The tournament was attended by a total of 45 archers. These ranged from juniors to veterans from an area including Lincolnshire and bordering counties. Pilgrim Bowmen fared well in the ladies’ recurve section with Gwen Mawer and Penny Bedford taking first and second respectively. Wendy Rowell from Friskney shot one notably good score in the ladies’ compound section. She put in a magnificent 1258 out of a possible 1296. As with all the ladies, she shot a Hereford round comprising 72 arrows from 80 yards, 48 from 60 yards and 24 from 50 yards, all shot at a target of 4ft diameter with a centre gold of nine inches in diameter.
