Long wait pays off for Bob

The mild weather continues unabated and added to the fact that the week’s precipitation came nowhere near to what was indeed predicted, we all enjoyed another super week.

So much so that some days were more like mid-summer, as bream made a brief reappearance from their recent slumbers and two catches of 50lbs plus, as well as good nets of skimmers, were taken from the town end of the Horncastle Road area.

Sunday also turned out better than predicted with summer-like temperatures again, very little rain and only a strong wind to contend with, meaning that many, particularly on Horncastle Road, resorted to quivertip methods with worm and caster as their main tactic.

Exactly that method brought almost instant success to Bob Reall who landed three good slabs in the first hour or so, after which all activity ceased in his swim, leaving him with an agonising long wait for the final whistle. Reports filtered through of other good catches from the same stretch of drain but he did not need to worry as the scales brought victory with nearly 2lbs to spare over his nearest rival. Likewise for Dave Simpson who did not fancy his chances from close to the cemetery footbridge, but returned to his summer form with a similar catch to Bob’s.

This again included a number of big skimmers, which was also the case for Don Green pegged just up from the wall end at 73 peg and for that matter also Dave Bontoft, right at that end peg 71 itself, with two more large bream.

No such big fish around on the Windsor Bank sections but John Dawes pegged right beside Mount Bridge made his presence felt with another 11lbs plus catch of skimmers to hang on to the fourth place, just 5ozs ahead of Chris Howard.

On the team front the Burgh outfit confirmed their top placing and despite giving ground to a rampant Don’s Saturday Club victory they actually increased their lead after this third round from a single point to a massive fourteen with two rounds remaining.

Perhaps a little lucky that the nearest rivals Mayfair Newark Gold could only field a three man team on this occasion but their form so far suggests that nothing much will stand in the way of their march to the Division One title. Similarly in Division Two the leading Mayfair Newark Red team came a real cropper to end the day in 6th place, nine points behind second placed Pilgrim Tackle and a round dozen down from winners Holbeach AA. This brings a much closer look to the race for the title as Pilgrim Tackle strike the front to hold a six-point advantage over the said Newark team.

Weather kind to all ages

Although almost totally lacking in sun, the weekend came in above expectations as both young and old enjoyed reasonable fishing conditions for the time of year. Despite the cool temperatures the two days felt reasonably pleasant due to the still conditions. But all this changed by Monday morning and we shall for certain have more than leaves falling around our ears during the days to come.

The Boston juniors continued the second of their winter series on an equally pleasant Windsor Bank section of the Bargate Drain on Saturday with some good catches of roach all round. The north end  (off Windsor Crescent) was the place to be as a battle royal developed here between Luke Morley and Nicholas Wright at adjacent pegs. Luke struck off with the breadpunch and pole at 7m but found the roach increasingly shy.

Subsequently a switch to squatt produced more interest but the slowdown in catch rate proved too costly as he had to settle for second place more than a pound behind Nicholas. For his part the initial tactics were spot on as he (Nicholas) quickly got into his stride and took good roach from start to finish to win the day. Reece Dillamore still soldiers on — with a plaster cast on his arm —  and despite this handicap managed to claim third place for himself, taking another decent net of roach in this four hour competition.

Results: 1 Nicholas Wright 7lbs 9ozs; 2 Luke Morley 6lbs 5ozs; 3 Reece Dillamore 3lbs 10ozs; 4 Jordan Shinn 1lb 8ozs; joint 6 Oliver Sumner and Andy Wood 1lb 7ozs.

The open match on Sunday, over much the same pegs, carried on where the youngsters left off and another “youngster” in comparison, showed everyone else the way home. A simple pole, squatt and groundbait approach brought a steady stream of good roach to Sean Higginbottom as he pulled away from his nearest rivals to win the match at a canter.  Similar tactics brought third place to Newark rising star Mark Nesbitt and sandwiched in between those two was “old stager” Barry Wigginton out of the same stable. Small perch were also definitely on the menu and many of the also-rans brought nets of between 3 and 5lbs to the scales in a very competitive match.

Results: 1 Sean Higginbottom, Boston, 9lbs 1oz, peg 39; 2 Barry Wigginton, Mayfair Newark, 7lbs 13ozs, peg 27; 3 Mark Nesbitt,  Mayfair Newark, peg 33; 4 Paul Yarwood, Skegness, 6lbs 8ozs, peg 29; 5 Sean Coaten, Holbeach, 6lbs 3ozs, peg 25; 6 Dave Edwards, Sheffield, 5lbs 15ozs peg 38.

Around the local clubs

In comparison the Sibsey AC match on the Stonebridge section of the Sibsey Trader Drain produced poor results, and obviously very few fish, as Duncan Smith won the day with one small bream and a few bits.

Likewise just three fish, one roach, one perch and a jack pike, helped Maurice Sharp to the runner-up spot and another net of bits to Colin Peltell for third.

Results: 1 Duncan Smith 2lbs 8ozs; 2 Maurice Sharp 1lb 10ozs; 3 Colin Peltell 1lb 5ozs.

A touch better but Stickney AC also found the River Bain at Coningsby out of sorts, which was due more to lack of flow and colour than anything else for this time of year. Perch were really the only interested parties and Andy Dillamore just managed to hold Mark Thornton at bay to claim the top spot.

Results: 1 Andy Dillamore 4lbs 2ozs; 2 Mark Thornton 3lbs 7ozs; 3 John Briggs 2lbs 11ozs.

Fishtoft AC travelled to Guyhirn on Sunday to fish the Twenty Foot Drain, where tench played a big part in the outcome of the match. Somewhat unfortunate for Jerry Clifton who had to settle for third spot behind nets which included these fish.

Gary Shinn was the main beneficiary as he added two specimens totalling 7lbs 15ozs to a good net of small silver fish. Next up was Gordon Manning who was another fortunate recipient, this time two more tench going a level 8lbs to add to a few more small roach and skimmers.

Results: 1 Gary Shinn 12lbs 7ozs; 2 Gordon Manning 10lbs 7ozs; 3 Jerry Clifton 7lbs 12ozs; 4 Paul Cater 6lbs 2½ ozs.

Next Sunday most of the club will be taking part in the third round Boston and District AA winter league competition that, with a weather eye on this week’s extensive rainfall, should take place on the Windsor Bank and Horncastle Road sections of the Bargate Drain.

It’s close but Ian earns success

A recent cut of weed, combined with almost gin clear conditions, made the second round of the Boston and District AA winter league doubly difficult, especially on the Horncastle Road section of the Bargate Drain.

Consequently most of the 50 competitors here were reduced to scratching for a few roach and perch, apart from, that is, the likes of Jamie Osgodby and Fred Bispham who managed to tempt the odd tench or two, the former making sixth place overall with two fine fish.

It was a different story for the other 50 on the Windsor Bank sections, where the rest of the top weights came from, invariably being ones of roach to pole and hemp or squatt.

On this occasion only Lincoln angler Ian Rogers managed double figures but such was the competition that a bevy of other anglers took up close positions behind him. Around 1½lbs covered the top four with Danny West landing the runner-up spot, John Kadzionis hanging on to third by the skin of his teeth ahead of Doug Jackson at the next peg, and about the same for the next batch which included local anglers Rob Smith, Alec Rawlings and Richard Kinning.

Teamwise in Division One the Newark based Mayfair Blue team got their act together this week and after a disastrous first round which saw them finish nearly last, they picked themselves up to take first place ahead of Poacher MG A, with Burgh, Sensas Lincs County and the Time Team in a three way tie for third.

Overall a lot more work needs to be done on their part as Burgh lead the way with their Gold (Mayfair) counterparts a single point away in second and Harlequins a huge 10 points adrift in third.

Similarly in Division Two the Mayfair Red team had an indifferent start, taking fourth place in the opening round but got themselves sorted this week, ending the day just one point down on a rejuvenated Fishtoft AC to clinch the overall lead.

They finished three points in front of Pilgrim Tackle as Dons Saturday Club 2 and Fishtoft AC tied for third another four points further back.

Individuals: 1Ian Rogers, Sensas Lincs County, 10lbs 4½ozs; 2 Danny West, Boston Angling Centre A, 9lbs 6ozs; 3 John Kadzionis, Mayfair Newark Blue, 8lbs 8ozs; 4 Doug Jackson, Mayfair Newark Gold, 8lbs 7ozs; 5 Rob Smith, DSC, 3  8lbs 1oz; 6 Jamie Osgodby, Sensas Lincs County, 7lbs 13½ozs.

Teams, Division One: 1 Mayfair Newark Blue 38 pts; 2 Poacher MG A 35 pts; equal 3 Burgh, Sensas Lincs County & Time Team 30 pts; 6 DSC 1 29 pts.

After two rounds: 1 Burgh 70 pts; 2 Mayfair Newark Gold 69 pts; 3 Harlequins 59 pts 4 The Time Team & Poacher MG A 58 pts.

Teams, Division Two: 1 Fishtoft AC 43 pts; 2 Mayfair Newark Red 42 pts; 3 Pilgrim Tackle 38 pts; 4 Poacher MG C 35 pts; 5 DSC 3 34 pts; 6 Boston Angling Centre B 31 pts.

After two rounds: 1 Mayfair Newark Red 79 pts; 2 Pilgrim Tackle 76 pts; 3 DSC 2 and Fishtoft AC 72 pts; 5 Poacher MG C 68 pts; 6 Holbeach AA 65 pts.

Section boards, Division One:  1a Mark Allen, Poacher MG A, 7lbs 7ozs; 1b Ian Rogers, Sensas Lincs County, 10lbs 4½ozs; 2a Danny West, Boston Angling Centre A, 9lbs 6ozs; 2b John Kadzionis, Mayfair Newark Blue, 8lbs 8ozs; 3a Dave Bontoft, Time Team, 4lbs 7ozs; 3b Chris Elsom, Sensas Lincs County, 12ozs; 4a Darren Pope, Poacher MG A, 4lbs 5½ozs; 4b Jamie Osgodby Sensas Lincs County 7lbs 13½ozs.

Section boards, Division Two:  1a Paul Cater, Poacher MG C, 6lbs 5½ozs; 1b Tim Langton, Mayfair Newark Red, 7lbs 8ozs; 2a Rob Smith, DSC, 3 8lbs 1oz; 2b Paul Pettener, Mayfair Newark Red, 6lbs 2ozs; 3a Graham Cripsey, DSC, 3 2lbs 11ozs; 3b Darren Snow, DSC 2, 1lb 12ozs; 4a Gary Shinn, Poacher MG C, 11ozs; 4b Gordon Manning, Fishtoft AC, 3lbs 14½ozs.

Luke and Nicholas share top spot

Summer has gradually faded away to be replaced by a comparatively gentle autumn so far. Indeed, recent days have been more like mid-summer ones, after another relatively mild weekend. Thankfully, this was not really affected by the spell of heavy rain later on Saturday.

Generally declining temperatures have applied to our local waters where the big fish population has all but refused to feed, along with the abundant skimmer population. They have been completely replaced by the almost equally prolific roach species — well to the fore in the last two or three weeks —  as shown in last weekend’s results.

The first of the Boston and District Angling Association’s junior winter series took place on the Horncastle Road section of the Bargate Drain in cool, breezy conditions but was surprisingly well supported with 15 youngsters in attendance. The match was not blessed with big weights but nevertheless proved competitive throughout the match length between the cemetery and railway bridges, and duly completed before that rain arrived.

Most anglers chose squatt and pinky with pole for roach as the main method but Daniel Austin achieved third place with a mainly perch catch to chopped worm. The match actually ended in a tie for the top spot as both Luke Morley and Nicholas Wright finished clear of that third place, albeit on different tactics.

Nicholas stuck to the tried and trusted squatt and pinky and perhaps was a touch lucky as Luke really got the roach in a feeding mood, only to run out of bread feed with an hour remaining.

Results: Joint 1 Luke Morley and Nicholas Wright 2lbs 10 ozs; 3 Daniel Austin 2lbs 4ozs; 4 Joe Ellicker 2lbs 5 Louis Richardson 1lb 12ozs. Next match is on Saturday October 22, meet at Windsor Crescent 8.30am.

Travelling pair land prizes

A cracking match took place on the town section of the Bargate Drain where seven competitors topped double figures — the lowest weight coming in at over 4lbs. The pity, perhaps, was that only 20 anglers chose to take part.

Travelling companions Neil Smithson and Jamie Osgodby drew at either end of the match on the Windsor Bank section and showed a clean pair of heels to the rest of the field, Neil taking the honours with nearly 4lbs to spare from peg 24.

These nets were almost invariably of good quality roach and fell to mainly hemp and squatt, combined with 6m to 8m of pole. Boston’s Trevor Ogilvie was next up from the adjacent peg to Jamie whilst down at the far end, Bob ‘The Gob’ Walker drew next to the winner and took fourth just three ounces adrift of Trevor, Keith Dobson completing the line-up in the 12lbs category.

Results: 1 Neil Smithson, Sensas Lincs County, 18lbs 5ozs; 2 Jamie Osgodby, Sensas Lincs County, 14lbs 8ozs; 3 Trevor Ogilvie, Boston, 13lbs 8ozs; 4 Bob Walker, Sheffield, 13lbs 5ozs; 5 Keith Dobson, DSC, 12lbs 5ozs; 6 Barry Wigginton, Mayfair Newark, 10lbs 9ozs; 7 Steve Winter, Harlequins, 10lbs 1oz.

The early part of the Horncastle Road section is also more of a struggle for any amount of roach as demonstrated by Stickney AC pegged in the 80s. Match secretary Chris Chapman held sway here and with the usual squatt and pole combination he comfortably held off father-and-son duo Andy and Reece Dillamore.

Results: 1 Chris Chapman 3lbs 11ozs; 2 Andy Dillamore 3lbs 5ozs; joint 3 Reece Dillamore and Mark Thornton 2lbs 10ozs.

Terry takes match victory

A bonus tench of around 2lbs helped Terry Gooding to victory in Fishtoft AC’s latest match on the upper Hobhole Drain at Midville. After that it was small fish to pole and pinky that brought second spot to Jerry Clifton and a third place tie for Mark Cook and Gary Shinn.

Results: 1 Terry Gooding 4lbs 8ozs; 2 Jerry Clifton 2lbs 11ozs; equal 3 Mark Cook and Gary Shinn 1lb 14ozs. Next Sunday most members will be taking part in the second round of the Boston and District AA Winter League that is scheduled for both the Windsor Bank and Horncastle Road sections of the Bargate Drain.

Good start to league campaign

The ever-popular Boston and District Angling Association winter league got off to its usual good start.

A total of 25 teams of four fished in two divisions on the Bargate Drain.

Roach, in some quantity, made up most of the leading weights, particularly for those pegged on Windsor Bank where Paul McPherson took maximum benefit from his peg close to the footbridge for a very comfortable victory.

A simple method of pole and squatt brought a steady stream of bites from the off and lasting right through to the final whistle, was enough to deny Mick Stamp the top spot. In turn, Mick did much the same to Pete Andrews whose almost identical tactics gained him third spot over Doug Jackson by 8ozs. Sean Higginbottom and Trevor Ogilvie completed the prize list from this bank with very similar catches, as Gary Walton was the unlucky loser in seventh place with three bream from the first section on Horncastle Road.

Big fish such as bream are more abundant on these pegs and the outcome could well have taken on a whole different aspect if all those that were hooked had been landed. But then such is life!

The team outcome proved to be a close affair in both leagues, particularly so in the second division where just five points covered the top four. It was nip-and-tuck all the way but Don’s Saturday Club 2 ensured success by virtue of two section wins to one, and a second, for the Holbeach outfit.

The youngsters of Pilgrim Tackle were always in with a shout but one poor result in section one resigned them to the third place, a single point ahead of Mayfair Newark Red. Only two teams vied for the top spot in division one and despite the lack of section wins the Mayfair Newark Gold team held sway with a   solid all round performance. They won by two points from a resurgent Burgh outfit with Harlequins, and the rest for that matter the proverbial mile behind, but don’t write them all off just yet.

Individuals: 1 Paul McPherson, DSC 2, 12lbs 8ozs peg 29;2 Mick Stamp, Harlequins, 11lbs 7ozs peg 10; 3 Pete Andrews, DSC 1, 10lbs 9ozs peg 36; 4 Doug Jackson, Mayfair Newark Gold, 10lbs 8½ozs peg 25; 5 Sean Higginbottom, Pilgrim Tackle, 9lbs 14½ozs peg 44; 6 Trevor Ogilvie, Time Team, 9lbs 10ozs.

Teams, Division One: 1 Mayfair Newark Gold 42 pts; 2 Burgh 40 pts; 3 Harlequins 30 pts; 4 Time Team 28 pts. Division Two: 1 DSC 2  42 pts; 2 Holbeach & Dist. 41 pts; 3 Pilgrim Tackle 38 pts; 4 Mayfair

Newark Red 37 pts.

Section boards, Division One: 1a Mick Stamp, Harlequins, 11lbs 7ozs; 1b Doug Jackson,  Mayfair Gold, 10lbs 0 ½ oz; 2a Pete Andrews, DSC 1, 10lbs 9ozs; 2b Chris Elsom, Mayfair Gold, 8lbs 5ozs; 3a Gary Walton, Burgh, 9lbs 6ozs; 3b Len Shucksmith, Old Codgers, 5lbs 7ozs; 4a Russ Parsons, Burgh, 5lbs 8ozs; 4b Mark Nesbitt, Mayfair Gold, 3lbs 10ozs. Division Two:  1a Kevin Hunt, Labour Club, 7lbs 9ozs; 1b Darren Crofts, Holbeach, 7lbs 15ozs; 2a Paul McPherson, DSC 2, 12lbs 8ozs; 2b Sean Higginbottom, Pilgrim Tackle, 9lbs 14½ozs; 3a Darren Snow, DSC 2, 2lbs 9½ozs; 3b Frank Coe, Holbeach, 2lbs 4ozs; 4a Gary Shinn, Poachers MG C, 1lb 3ozs; 4b Ross Ingamells,  Pilgrim Tackle, 1lb 13ozs.

The Grimsby based United Anglers took up the remaining pegs to the railway bridge, and here three good skimmers to pinky made the difference as Jamie Cole added these to a nice net of roach to win this match with some ease.

Next door to him and a single tench of around 4lbs helped Bill Dent to the runner-up position, Mike Deakins, two pegs away, having then to settle for third spot with another net of roach, this time to pole and breadpunch.

Result: 1 Jamie Cole 7lbs 6ozs, peg 141; 2 Bill Dent 4lbs 5ozs, peg 140; 3 Mike Deakins 3lbs 14ozs, peg 138; 4 Shaun Bell 2lbs 1oz, peg 128.

Anxiety over rats is rising

Still on the Bargate Drain and many anglers, along with local residents, are now complaining about the dramatic increase in the rat population — the four-legged variety of course — over recent years.

The situation, in most people’s minds, is due mainly to the ever present and unsightly garbage that seems to accumulate almost nightly at the wall end of the Horncastle Road section.

This, I feel sure, can be blamed on unwanted take away food and packaging from the town’s various outlets and if nothing else, gives a bad impression to the many visitors that the town now attracts, some of course paying a call to the Maud Foster Mill on Willoughby Road.

I seem to remember previous calls for this situation to be resolved but nothing appeared to happen once the initial hoo-ha had died down. Perhaps now is the time for a new initiative, which our local Boston and District Angling Association would fully endorse and support, and at this juncture I myself would call upon all those in authority  — Environment Agency, Boston Chamber of Commerce, Boston Borough Council and perhaps even our local MP — to get together and address this growing problem with a firm resolve to effect a permanent solution.
